Starbury

First off I have to admit that I don't read Poasting and Toasting as much as I should. Whenever I stop by I end up reading something and wishing I had wrote it. Or maybe I just wish the Internet did not make it so easy to catch people stealing material. Alas. The real reason for that long-winded intro is I'm not entirely sure where you stand on Stephon Marbury. When it's all said and done he'll be one of the most controversial players of his generation. To some he's everything that is wrong with today's highly paid NBA players who aren't quite superstars but think they are. To others, like some of the guys at SLAM magazine, it's impossible to say a bad word about him. I'm somewhat torn. However, I loved this clip of Marbury making fun of Steven A. Smith. WHAT ABOUT THE RUMORS! YOU SUCK! I also enjoyed "We just do what we do when we can do it." So after all that here's my question. Where do people stand on Marbury?

Thanks for stopping by, Jim.
I know I don't speak for everyone here, but my thoughts on Marbury have changed a few times over his time with the Knicks.

When Marbury first got here, I was absolutely enamored with him. He started off slow, but there was a long period where it seemed like he could do no wrong. Steph hit shots from everywhere on the court, and had a good connection with guys like Keith Van horn and Kurt Thomas (more on the court than off).

That era ended , and Marbury began to slow down a little over time. By last season, I was thorougly pissed off with Steph. Sure, he was aching, but he just didn't seem to care out there and had no respect for his coach (LB, but then again who would?) or his teammates. There was also the "best point guard in the league" statement, which really sucked.

This year, things started off poorly for Marbury and I kind of came to the conclusion that he was old, hurt, and his career might be winding down. The last few minutes led me to believe otherwise. I've loved Marbury this year for a few reasons. His charitability is an obvious plus. His renewed passion for the game and ability to take over has been refreshing. His defense was vastly underrated this year, as he was frequently assigned to the opposing team's 2-guard. I've just been impressed with his effort and determination despite injuries to himself and everyone around him.

So the answer to your question, I suppose, is that, at the moment, I'm pretty pleased with Stephon Marbury. These days he's a charitable entrepeneur, a tough guard, and a warrior out on the court.

Interesting Marbury story
In Larry Platt's love fest about Allen Iverson (Only the Strong Survive) he writes about the night Iverson and Marbury were drafted. Afterwards they went to Puff Daddy's draft party. Marbury poured some champagne for some friends from Coney Island. Apparently Puff Daddy had paid for the champagne and was not pleased. The rap mogul yelled, "You pay for that? You lucky I'm letting you drink my Cristal, let alone your punk-ass friends." I have no idea why that sticks with me. But watching Marbury from afar I've always thought there was something to like about him.
Celtics '08 or bust. Are you on the bandwagon?

Marbury...
I pretty much second Seth - love at first, then hate, then appreciation last season.  He really quietly carried the team - while his stats were so down everyone was writing him off, he was actually making his team better...

So if you ask me my opinion - you see what Baron Davis did for the Warriors this offseason?  I think that's what Marbury will do for the Knicks next season.  Maybe I'm wrong or grossly over-reaching, but I think that's what he will do....
