All-White American NBA All-Stars!

The other night in the game thread we were having the discussion of the top white American players in the NBA.  I was talking it over with a few co-workers, and here is the starting five that we came up with:

PG Kirk Hinrich, SG Mike Dunleavy, SF Mike Miller, PF David Lee, C Chris Kaman

Since Kaman played for the German National team in last summer's Olympics, Seth said that he should be disqualified.  In that case, I'd put Spencer Hawes as the starting center.

It's unfair to put Lee on this list because he transcends race

Bench: PG Steve Blake, SG Jason Kapono, SF Joe Alexander (??? find me another good white American 3 - and I refuse to put Adam Morrison here), PF Kevin Love (because Troy Murphy sucks), C Jeff Foster (hey, he hustles...)

Someone at work asked me today if this was 20 years ago, what the starting five would be.  Here's what I came up with:

PG John Stockton, SG Chris Mullin, SF Larry Bird, PF Kevin McHale, C Bill Laimbeer (yes he did play center).

The bench would be: PG Mark Price, SG Danny Ainge, SF Kelly Tripucka (career-high 26.5 ppg in 1988-89 season), PF Tom Chambers (of Game Boy's NBA All-Star Challenge fame), C Mike Gminski.

Before I let you go, Nate would've never allowed this to happen...

Poor Mark Jackson.

there's a little

human stain stuff going on here too. for instance, deron williams and jason kidd are both of mixed race, but are mostly definitely white-skinned. does that count for our purposes?

career per 36 min averages

Foster: 9.2 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 1.1 blk, 50.2% FG
Przybilla: 7.3 ppg, 10.9 rpg, 2.7 bpg. 55.9% FG

guess it really could’ve gone either way. there might not be two more similar players in the NBA today.

Andersen barely averages

16 minutes a game and 5 points over his career, and Walton sucks.

Alexander isn’t great, but i’d still take him over either of those guys. i guess ideally it would be Troy Murphy at the 3 (11.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg career) and Love at the 4. i just left out Murph because he’s soft.

um

theres this thing called defense. Anderson SHITS on alexander in that category. He also gets blocks. Anderson gets PT on the Nuggets, a great team with good power Forwards. Alexander gets minimal PT ….on the bucks.

the difference in PT

is negligible. Andersen averages 16, Alexander averages about 12.

the numbers are still pretty similar per 36 minutes…
Andersen: 11 ppg, 10 rpg, 3.5 blk, 1.2 ast, 0.8 stl
Alexander: 13.6 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.3 blk, 1.7 ast, 0.7 stl

i based most of it on age – Alexander turned 22 three weeks ago while Andersen will be 31 this summer.

i disagree

i don’t know if you guys have seen Budinger but that kid has game. he’s a 6’7 two-guard that is really athletic and has unlimited range. i think Singler could be a solid pro as well.

budinger sucks

I’ve seen him play on tv or in person at least 20 times and he sucks. He is slow and can’t defend…bayless was waaay better than budinger last year and budinger has taken a big step back this season, not even the best player on his team anymore, that would be jordan hill. Budinger should’ve gone pro last year he probably won’t even be a first rounder this year.

Woah woah...

I’d argue that Ridnour beats out Steve Blake, although I guess that one’s a tossup. Another good white American 3? I’ve never been much for his game, but Shane Battier is definitely a solid all-around choice.

Battier's white?

I don’t even know what’s going on anymore.

I’ll throw the name Brad Miller out there. Past his best now but still pretty serviceable.
