Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Now I remember why I boycott Sportscenter

I, like every red-blooded American man, watch Sportscenter every morning before work.  I, however, every NBA season become infuriated with the Dee-Dee-Dee commentary for Knicks highlights.

Take for example, this morning.  Josh Elliot.  Deuchebag.  Doing the Celtics-Knicks highlights....First of all, not Josh's fault, but ESPN shows like 90 percent Celtics highlights.  They show Garnett dunking all over the Knicks.  Granted, he played well. But I did not see one move from Gallinari - who played well.  I did not see one move by Harrington - who also played well.  Of course they showed Al Harrington getting stuffed by Garnett.  They also showed Garnett pulling the chair (the biggest cop-out move on Defense of all time - just ask Kurt Thomas) on David Lee.  Made Lee look like a herb.  Actually, my man had 19 and 16.  Not only that, Josh Elliot says "Lee did what he could...but the Celtics kept coming".  When you say it that way, it sounds like David Lee's performance is coming in a losing effort.  They won.  They played well.  I know what you're saying.  It's just pre-season.  I'm knitpicking.  Just watch a Knicks highlight on ESPN.  Even when we were a playoff team with Allan Houston, they'd show highlights of the other teams stars, show one jumper by Allan, then put up the score.  Such weak coverage.  I've heard Linda Cohn, a "Knick fan" and native New Yorker mispronounce players names and shit.  Preseason or Regular season.   It will either humiliate you or humor you.  Either way, the coverage stinks.

I totally agree!

You should read “God Save the Fan.” Everybody thinks ESPN is awesome, but we only think that because there is no alternative. They monopolize national coverage. It’s actually less painful for us because New York has several major newspapers with good beat writers (sometimes).

agreed, except...

espn gives us web gems, and i love web gems. i’ve tried with limited success to incorporate web gems into some of my dinner recipes.

There's no anti-Knicks bias

We’ve had dreadful teams for 7 years. Until that changes, ESPN will follow the conventional wisdom that the Knicks are an object of ridicule.

Only winning will change that.

not an Anti-Knicks bias

And you’re right to a certain degree…winning will force these guys to do their homework and actually show a decent Knick highlight and give them some love… But like I said, even when the Knicks were “good”, 2002ish era when Allan Houston was carryin the team on his back, the Knicks highlights were god awful….the reason the Knicks highlights on Sportscenter are terrible is because LeBron James, Shaq or Brett Favre aren’t on the Knicks. Just watch. Next time the Knicks play a team with a “Superstar” player…you will watch the highlight and have no idea who won the game because you will get 90 percent clips of the opposing teams Superstar. One basket by the Knicks and then the final score. It’s like they don’t care about showing highlights of plays that had anything to do with the outcome of the games. Because as bad as the Knicks have been, they have had big wins over good teams…with good players.

Winning doesn't make them do their homework.

The Yankees win all the time and it’s like ESPN reads their stats upside down.

I don't have TV anymore

seriously, but when I go to my folks house and try to watch sportscenter, looking for some clips, the segment is always too short to tell the story. And then they show the score on the screen for 30 seconds while they make stupid comments. Then we get to see various commentators, most of whom aren’t very smart, share their opinions. Then it’s time for the commercials. Which go ON. and ON. I think they suck.

The thing with ESPN...

being the worldwide leader and all, is that they’re going to show inherent bias by trying to maximize ratings (duh). I only mention this obvious point because one would assume that there would be an even heavier NY bias because like 1/10 of the US lives in the NY metro area, however, people are so hyperconscious of this bias that they freak out whenever New York (and Boston to a lesser extent) teams get extensive coverage. Why did ESPNChicago come before ESPNNewYork or Boston? Because its much safer to glorify the city that much of the midwest can identify with, rather than the despised east coast markets.

Now about basketball. It seems less prevalent in sports today, but as Obama can attest, much of the US is still quite terrified of black people. The longer that ESPN runs highlights for the lig, the more TV sets get turned off. For a show like Sportscenter that has a more general focus than say, NBA on TNT, too much NBA can be a ratings killer. Notice how they’ll often follow NBA highlights with a college football story.

One last point. Say what you will about Simmons, but the dude will talk about hoops at length at any time of year. No matter how many bitchy emails he gets and how much his editor tells him to talk about the NFL, Simmons is always down to talk hoops. Pretty dope.

"But when he saw it, he just put his hands up and they couldn’t give it to him. It just fell to the ground, I-I don’t, you know … So, that showed me he had great experience..." - Jeff Van Gundy

ESPN clearing have a bias for the Lakers, today i kept on checking up on sports updates today on their site, and for their headline updates it kept on saying things like “Lakers off to hot start” even tho they have been down the entire game.

Just now for the headline it says " Lakers Lashing Out" – “The Mav’s were well on their way to win, but the Lakers just won’t quit.”

The Lakers were down 20 at the time and have now lost by 14….
