Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Jordan Hill

How bad does Hill have to be if he can't get pt on this team?   Does he have the swine? leprosy? what?  I'm catching up with the Knicks after baseball, so sorry if this is old territory -- I just have a hard time imagining a player so bad he can't get off the bench at the Garden.  I didn't like the pick, but I took comfort that at least some other sucker fell for Thabeet before the Knicks had the chance to humiliate themselves.  But hey, at least Thabeet gets to prove how awful he is -- he and even gets the chance to shatter his jaw on the court.  Hill only gets the chance to show how bad he is in practice? that's not fair.   What the heck is going on?  He can't be that bad . . . can he?

He only plays when the other’s teams worst players are on the court. That gives Jordan Hill the best chance to succeed, build up his confidence, and not have embarrassed when compared to Brandon Jennings.

Great going, Donnie Walsh

I could give two shits about next year when we could’ve had an all-star this one. Danilo wasn’t a terrible pick, but fucking Jordan Hill? QBAAWFHNOIEWHB

Every year

Big men are picked on potential and picked too high, simply because athletic, talented big men are tough to find. And a lot of guys dominate in college because of their size advantage and once that’s eliminated at the pro level they don’t thrive.

Going into this year’s draft, I guarantee you most every team had Jordan Hill rated higher this year than they had Brook Lopez rated last year. But I would say 50% or more of big man lottery picks end up being ordinary players or outright busts.

At this point, I’d say it’s unlikely Jordan Hill will develop into a dominating player. I think we would have seen a flash of that by now. It’s still very possible he becomes a useful big. His late start in organized basketball throws some doubt in there, but still, I don’t think we’re looking at a star here. I don’t think it’s useful to compare him to Jermaine O’Neal. O’Neal was younger, and stuck behind Wallace and Sabonis on a contending team. When he did play, he showed more.

But I still have hope that Hill could turn into a starting power forward, maybe that can play some 5, and he might be a pretty good one. And he’s not going to be a selfish head case that ruins team chemistry, so that’s good. Maybe a Kurt Thomas type of player? I’ll take that. I had a feeling at the time that maybe they should have taken the riskier pick and went for Jennings, because even though I felt that ‘Oh no, another Marbury’ feeling, I also recognized that the Knicks should be wary of that fear stopping them from taking the best player available.

Jennings looks good now, and the Bucks are winning. But whether he will be a great point guard is still up in the air. He has to show he can lead his team and make his teammates better. We don’t really know if he will do that. But I think he will. He will also have to play defense. I’m not so sure he will do that.

What’s done is done – I’ll root for Jordan Hill. What else can I do. Hopefully he will help the team at some point. Every team makes good and bad draft decisions. The Knicks have made some good late 1st round/2nd round pickups and Gallo looks like a solid pick, but Hill may be a bust.

But something must be wrong

No team bats 1.000 in the draft and I’m going to spare myself the torment of comparing him to Jennings, Blair, Casspi (how could a NY team not look at a dude from Israel?) Lawson, Budinger, Gibson, . . . etc. I will say the guy I wanted with the pick was Hansbrough (I thought Jennings might be too volatile, and he may yet prove to be so, though he looks like the next allen iverson so far — speaking of volatility . . . ).

What I’m wondering is whether something is seriously wrong with Hill. Something that shows itself in practice or the locker room, and wondering if anybody’s heard rumor.

Because this is obviously a developmental year — everybody knows it. Winning is not on the table. So if we’re not developing our lottery pick, something must be seriously amiss.

Its probably got more to do

with the thought in the organization that the playoffs are still in reach.

I know, it sounds pretty stupid, but I’m pretty sure they’re thinking this way.

Once they realize that its a lost cause (and pretty much….right now…its a lost cause) they probably play Hill more.

He’s got a nice outside shot, that I know. I don’t really see him as one of those ‘fake’ potential types. Its definitely there.

Hopefully as the season goes along, less Jeffires and more Hill.

…..But even the idea that management still thinks this team can make the playoffs is not as bad as if they drafted Tyler Hansborough…what are you nuts?

Hansborough,

After missing all of training camp, Hansborough, in his first 30 minutes of NBA action, has grabbed 13 rebounds and scored 24 points. And he’s attempted 18 foul shots. Dude looks like James Spader hopped up on goofballs, but that’s pretty good.

Absolutely

Knicks fans who hate Hands are gonna hate him even more after next Wed when he hustles us for a double double in 18 minutes of play. Not to mention the hounding D and the fact he pisses off opposing players (and fans) so much.

He is THE prototypical guy you LOVE if he’s in your colors, and you HATE otherwise. That is a good player.

It's funny

That both Budinger and Hansbrough were seriously dissed by most everyone covering the draft. Not one ‘expert’ had either of those guys higher than Jordan Hill. And yet it’s certainly possible both will be better players. Same thing with Carlos Boozer – no one thought he was going to be any good, because he was a 6’8" center in college. Elton Brand was in the same situation but for some reason he was the consensus #1.

I do think that teams tend to put too much stock into how awesome a guy looks dunking. They also care too much about 1 or 2 inches. If Jordan Hill was 2 inches taller, he would have been picked 2nd over Thabeet. If Thabeet was 6’11" rather than 7’2", he would have fell to the late first round. The big question to me is whether they have the drive and the competitiveness and the intelligence to figure out a way to succeed. That’s not something that jumps out at me watching Hill. But then again, he does seem to have a shooting touch and likes to be active out there, and he doesn’t seem to be a sulker, so maybe he might figure something out.

Walsh says (in code) JORDAN HILL MUST PLAY

This from The Post. It sounds like friction between Coach Tony and Walshy

Walsh says:

we keep doing the right things, we can turn this around. But there’s nobody in the franchise that’s happy we’ve won one game; so, yeah, I don’t like that.

"But on the other hand, there’s a bigger job: Young guys have got to get better, we have to see what we have with the players we have out there right now so we know what we’re going to do in the future. And that, to me, is the goal
