Monta?
Theknicksblog has a piece where they suggest the Knicks could go after Monta Ellis. Even though he has a big 11 million per year contract for the next few years, if they traded Curry and Chandler for him, it would only add about 1.6 million to the cap next year.
I haven't seen Ellis play much. My impression of him is that he's kind of a bit combo guardish - and I don't like his sourpuss attitude lately. But then again, you could give a guy a pass for that when their coach is Don Nelson. Still, doing this deal means Ellis is your point guard for the forseeable future. Is he good enough?
I worry about this deal because I really don't know if he is worth 11 million per year. Is he that good? Also, the Knicks clearly need an upgrade at the point, but the other thing they desperately need is an actual center in theI Omiddle. And I still believe that Toney Douglas might be the answer at the point. If Douglas is good enough, I like his leadership and defense, and if he's good enough, I like the idea of holding onto Curry. If Curry returns to his 06-07 form, we really need that right now. I have a feeling the Knicks might win more games with a rejeuvenated Curry and Douglas at the point, than with Ellis at the point and Lee in the middle. Long term though, if Ellis is really a great player, this might be a good trade.
People who have seen Ellis play a lot, what say you? Is he a true point? Can he play defense?

Only in Golden State
I was shocked when he got that contract. I’ve watched him play; I grew up a Knicks & Warriors fan — I sure know how to choose em, don’t I!. He’s not a true point and probably can’t play defense after being corrupted by the Emperor.
I don’t see too much more upside. I think you’re paying 11M for what you see right now. Is that worth it? I’m sure Isiah would think so.

I like Monta Ellis
its hard to deny his talent. He’s also pretty young still, but I hesitate to campaign for the Knicks to get him. He strikes me as a future headcase and one of these guys who will spend his career switchign teams every 2 years. His scooter incident was pretty ridiculous, and with the way he instantly tried to rule out playing with Stephen Curry on the court, it just seems like he is another Steve Francis-type “me” player. Sure, its Golden State, which would drive any player insane, but something tells me to let another team deal with Ellis. I hope he blossoms, sure, but I also feel the same way about Stephen Jackson. Good “me” players….

Ellis doesn't make sense.
He’s another me first player. He doesn’t have the ability to make his teammates better. The Warriors are doing crappy with him as the point guard, so is he supposed to come to New York with an arguably worst supporting cast and do better?
I like the kid, I really do. He’s fast and he can score, but he really wouldn’t make the Knicks better, and he’d be tied to us for a long time. We desperately need a POINT guard, and he just is not one.

For the love of God...PLEASE
If they’re willing to take Curry how could you not take this deal? I like Chandler – but if he has to go too he has to go.
This is my first time posting anything here at P&T and I’ve got to say. The Knicks are not getting Lebron. We’re not getting Wade. I have high, high, high hopes for Joe Johnson and I think he’s our best bet. We need to get Ellis (if the Warriors really would take Curry), get Johnson (who will be a lot cheaper than James or Wade), resign Lee (I think he’ll be cheaper than expected due to the big names in the 2010 market, and find better depth than Duhon and Hughes at guard.
2010
C David lee
PF Danilo Gallinari
SF Joe Johnson
SG Monta Ellis
PG Tony Douglas
With Hill, Jeffries, Chandler (depending on the possibe Warriors trade) and anybody except Duhon and Hughes coming off the bench. This could be a turn around team. What do you think?

Curry
Dubs fan here and I can tell you that I don’t see any way managament entertains taking Curry — even if his deal is expiring — unless NY takes Maggette. Unless Nelly has totally hijacked the franchise, or Cohan is on orders from a new prospective owner to clear salary at the expense of talent, I don’t see the W’s just giving away Ellis for nothing (we have enough players who aren’t/can’t play already and Nelson would never play Curry).
I don’t know if there is any way the Knicks entertain trading Gallinari, but that is probably first and foremost who Nelson wants. I wouldn’t disagree, though I also like David Lee. My personal trade ideas are:
to NY: Ellis, Claxton, Wright (or Mikey Moore if you want someone who can play this year)
to GS: Duhon, Jeffries, Lee
If Gallinari is involved, same people mentioned above but with GS sending either Steph Curry or Randolph. I can’t believe i’m saying Randolph, but considering his relationship with Nelly (or lack of) as well as Gallinari’s game, I can see Nelly pushing that trade. I’d personally prefer sending Curry over Randolph, but the added size GS acquires (I want to see the monstrosity of Randolph, Galinari, Lee, and Biedrins on the floor together) by sending Ellis/Curry could negated due to created deficit of slashing guards who can kick out to Morrow/Gallinari for threes.

Maybe...
I like the idea of getting rid of Jeffries, buit Ellis’ contract is gigantic. I really would rather pass on him anyway, he seems like a waste.
I’d trade Lee tho. Most definitely I would. For Monta Ellis???? No.
The Knicks aren’t gonna trade Gallo either (at Least I hope not…).

Ellis contract is not that bad. Obviously the guy is not a superstar (he’s tier 2, but still only 24) but he’s not on a rookie contract either so he’s going to be making serious money like any decent vet. For his production — 20/5/5/2 on 46-51% shooting — 11m annually and a contract that doesn’t escalate (11m the first year, 11m the last year) is not that bad. He’s the 50th highest paid player in the league right now and by the end of his deal at age 28-29 he’ll probably be around the 70th highest paid player…are there really that many guys better than him in the league?
by StJ on Nov 18, 2009 4:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Its not completely the idea of the contract...
for his production, yea, its not bad.
For WHO we’re getting, I don’t like it. He’s a PG sized SG. He’s a 6th man. Or a younger Steve Francis-lite type dude.
He’s a good player capable of putting up a better line, but I’d rather the Knicks start from scratch than try to Isiah THomas their way through this season.
In the offseason, if the W’s really wanna trade Ellis still, then I’d think about it.
Even if they take back the Knciks deals that last past 2010, Jeffries and Curry, then that doesn’t really solve anything.
Its an unnecessary risk for a player I just don’t think you can win around (and be paying $11 mill to).
And I’m not saying he’s worse than 50 or 70 other players. There’s some horrible contracts out there…I really don’t want them either.
So…PASS.

Not a PG
I’m 90% in favor of Monta as long as two conditions are met.
1. We drop Curry’s contract in the deal.
2. He isn’t seen as the future PG of this team.
The fact of the matter is, we need a guy with is pure scoring ability the guard position and I don’t think anybody here will argue that he’s a better talent than Hughes or Duhon. Is he going to give you great effort defensively? No. Is he selfish in looking for his own shot too often? Yes. That’s why he’s a combo guard. You play him off the ball and groom Douglas to be the PG of the future.
I’m still pushing for Joe Johnson whether or not this trade goes down (I still doubt that Ellis will actually end up here). Imagine, with all the money headed to James, Wade, Bosh, etc…there is a realistic possibility that we can have Monta Ellis and Joe Johnson at the 2 and 3 next year with some money left over to grab some role players (and hopefully sign David Lee – I don’t care who you are – you don’t replace walking, talking double doubles very easily). If anybody else can envision a better 1/2 scoring option than Johnson/Ellis for us I really challenge you to do so. Especially when you start taking into account the shrinking cap. Also, from what I can tell, Johnson isn’t a “me” guy so we wouldn’t really be dealing with dueling egos. Just Ellis’s. How don’t we do this?

Johnson and Ellis
play the same position. Johnson is SG and Ellis is a Shooting PG. Granted, the talent level is higher than what we have, but so is the pricetag. Do you really think we should blow our load to sign two players for our backcourt, neither of which is a true PG, and while we still have Toney Douglas and likely Nate Robinson? Meanwhile… who would we put at Center?
Joe Johnson isn’t a big headache, but he IS gonna command a lot of shots… like the 31 he took the other night… And Monta Ellis will be shooting another 20… thats kinda a lot.

yup...
The only thing intriguing with Joe Johnson is the fact he played under Pringles before, and that’s really how he broke out as a player.
It might work, but to sign him to a max deal? He seems more like a Rashard Lewis sort of part—-a dude who’s talent says he should be a superstar..but better if he’s the 1A or 2 option.
Monta Ellis + Joe Johnson would just fail. Two inconsistent players.
also..a Monta Ellis trade seems like a Isiah Thomas move. PASS.

I'm going to say 'no' to this one
I like Toney Douglas and I don’t like what Ellis provides for the salary.

PASS Like Payton Manning on Sunday Night!
A starting 5 where Lee plays center at 6’8 and 6’0 Monta plays shooting guard? That would get the Knicks killed defensively every single night; they’re already having issues with their lack of size as it is.
There is no way the Knicks should EVER trade Gallo for some of the over payed players on the Warriors, let alone an undersized SG like Monta. As much fun as he is to watch, his $11mil a year contract makes him like Eddy Curry, good offensively but bad defensively, thereby making him over payed for what he brings.
Since Nelson seems to dislike Anthony, I’d argue that a David Lee & Wilson Chandler for Anthony Randolph deal makes more sense for BOTH teams. They get two decent young players and NY gets a very young player with lots of upside … with maybe a late first-round or early-second round pick thrown in from GS’s end perhaps??

I like this idea
But Lee has to agree to be traded as part of his one year deal, and I have trouble believing anyone would agree to be traded to the Warriors.
