Sounds like we can forget about Allen Iverson.
Allen Iverson became a free agent at 6 p.m. last night. It didn't take long thereafter for the Knicks to sour on the proposition of signing him. From Howard Beck of the NY Times:
In an abrupt reversal, Knicks officials decided late Thursday not to offer Iverson a contract, putting an end to their brief flirtation, according to a person close to the deliberations.
Although team officials were highly intrigued by Iverson, a four-time scoring champion, they finally decided that he posed too great a risk because of his long history of problems on and off the court.
It was cute while it lasted. Now let's put that all behind us and get back to losing some games!

Crisis Averted
I thought about AI alot over the past few days (pause). I’m really happy Donnie didn’t pull the trigger. It could have been a real nightmare.

OK. Now.
Don’t play TD at shooting guard. Point guard only. Preferably starting.
Don’t play Lee at center.
Don’t play Jeffries – at all (he’s not going to raise his value by not putting up stats!)
We’ll be OK, or we won’t. But let’s see Toney and Gallo and Hill figure something out.

Bayless
While thinking about Iverson and available PGs in general, my mind turned to Jerryd Bayless collecting dust and pine needles at the end of Portland’s bench.
He looked outstanding in Summer league (won mvp in 2008 i think) and i know half the players are half in the bag from pina colodas and bikini-clad hotel hoppers, but whatever, I hear he’s good.
You can always steal prospects from win-now teams if you can offer them something that will help them win now. Not that Portland has many gaping holes in their roster (tho their back up PF is Juwan remember me? kinda? Howard and I’d say David Lee would be a definite upgrade — and Portland is draft pick rich so . . . .)
Anyway, Bayless is just one example. We gotta make some moves.

Bayless?
Do we automatically have to consider guys good players, if we didn’t pick them when we picked Gallo? How does that guy help us? Isn’t he one of those ‘If he could learn the point’ kind of guys with less defensive ability than TD?

For the best
While I may not have been crazy about every move that Walsh has made, I give him credit for having a plan and sticking to it.
The Knicks have sucked for years, but the difference now is that they have some young players with real potential. It may take a few years for that potential to be realized, but I am convinced that this team will get better

This group of players is really a sorry lot.
To NYERinSF from a NYER in Chicago I agree that you have to give Walsh credit for having a plan and sticking to it. However I do not believe there is one player who will be a New York Knick in 3-4 years. Most of the present Knicks will be out of the league in 1-2 years.

welllll....
they ain’t THAT bad. they are just all 8th men or worse off the bench, and a few guys are 6th men. and then gallinari. they will have jobs, barring freak occurrences. be careful eddy!

3-4 years is an eternity in the NBA
Yes, most of the current Knicks will be out of the NBA in 2 years, but I think Gallo, Nate, and Chandler all have good chances of still being Knicks 3 years from now

that's a crock of sht
Gallo, Hill, TD are damn near assured, I haven’t seen either of these dudes be a complete wast of air.
I’d think one of Nate or Lee would be a Knick. Wilson Chandler is a possibility too, cuz when they have to re-sign him, he’s not gonna cost all that much. I would like a better defined role for Wilson tho, he doesn’t seem like the Swiss army knife type they want him to be.
Everyone else…yea, or at least not on the Knicks.

Good move.
I know the season’s over for the Knicks already…but its only November. Why would you get a dude like Iverson who no matter where he plays, whether is starting for Duhon or with Duhon…..
AI was gonna take Tony Douglas’ minutes away.
As the season goes on, you’ll see more of TD on the floor. Iverson was never gonna help the Knicks win games…he was just gonna sell a few tickets and some jersey’s, that’s it.
I would have been real pissed to see DNP-CD next to TD’s name…while I say 35 minutes, 24pts on 12 of 30 shooting for Allen Iverson.
Good move Walsh.

I usually agree with u but...
If Dantoni was smart he’d just give most of Duhon’s minutes to Iverson. Whateva you think about the guy, it is undeniable that Iverson at his worst is better than Duhon at his best.
plus we only really have larry at SG and he’s used to playing the pine despite his recent play. Why not a backcourt of Douglas at PG AND Iverson at SG.
Just sayin, ANYTHING that could possibly take Duhon out the line up, possibly even the team is good with me.

don't get me wrong...
I’d much rather he play TD and AI instead of Duhon at all.
….its just, do you think he’s gonna do that?
I woulda bet that if they signed AI, their lineup would have Duhon and AI in the starting lineup.
I think, and actually from what Walsh said in the “hurt the Knicks development of the future” sort of confirms it, that the Knicks see a lot in TD and if they sign another guard in AI…its gonna eat into TD’s minutes moreso than Duhon.
I don’t know why he couldn’t just sit Duhon and play AI exclusively over him…
BUt still, that’s an extra guard in the rotation. Someone’s minutes are gonna decline and I think it would have been not only Duhon, but TD would lose some minutes too.

we will see
I think we missed a chance to make an easy upgrade, albeit temporary. I’m optimistic that Iverson would have helped on a number of levels. He would stimulate an effort from his play, he would have shown New Yorkers that we may be waiting for 2010, but we DO care about wins, and he would show that he still holds value and isnt the volatile person his reputation suggests.
Maybe the talk was a purposeful ploy towards Chris Duhon. Show how easy it would be to replace him this year. He can be fine when he is playing well (1st half of 2008 season). The problem is now that Iverson is a none factor… New York will be right where is has been. Talented players, playing like they could give a shit. Our backcourt remains with Duhon playing 35+ minutes. If we REALLY plan to develop our guys, we sure as shit aren’t showing it.

THANK YOU!!!
that’s been my point. we’re arguing Iverson will hurt TD’s minutes and/or developement but Dantoni hasn’t shown he cares about that! He refuses to start Douglas or give him quality time. He’ll tease him with a sympathy start in which he’ll play 12 mins all game but that is far from a confident vote that he can lead the team at PG.
We argue Iverson will destroy chemistry…We have no chemistry!!!
I want us to play like a team and I want the young guns to gain experience. More than that I want Douglas to start cause Duhon aint cutting it. His hot start last year has not convinced me he’s more than a backup. And if Dantoni doesn’t plan on developing TD and the boys then why not bring AI….because Duhon’s feelings would be hurt??? please.
I think maybe Walsh will put pressure on pringles to play the young ones hopefully , cuz even if A. I. aint the answer this team still has more than a few questions and it’s gonna be a looooong season.

if this was later in the season
and TD was still not getting minutes…the idea that Pringles isn’t playing him would be a good argument.
But its November. 11 games into the season.
if we got AI…that would more than likely mean the entire season, some or most of TD’s minutes go down.
As the season goes on, I’d like to think they give TD (and Hill of course) more minutes.
They’re rooks. The other guys aren’t playing well..but you can also hurt a rook’s confidence if he keeps failing and losing on the court.
If by January or Feb. TD and Hill are still getting the same minutes…well then there’s a problem.
"It ain't over till its over"---
by FreeBradshaw on Nov 20, 2009 3:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
So if Pringles aint playin him
then A. I. here could not have hurt TD much if at all. Even further down the line this season should he decide for TD to get more action and we couldn’t move Duhon by then, you could always cut Iverson at that point with no repercussions going into 2010. Voila! TD would still have minutes.

I think that's the part most people are forgetting.
we can waive him anytime. Anytime. ANYTIME. For example, sign him, wait five minutes for the ink to dry and then…
Walsh: “ya know how we said we wanted you on board Allen?”
A. I. : “yeh”
Walsh: “Well, I know you just signed this contract and everything but we’ll have to waive you”
A. I.: “What!!!! You can’t be -@#$*!^# serious!!!!!”
Walsh:" Yeeeeh, sorry bout that. Seems the five minutes after you signed we ran simulation that showed you disrupting team chemistry and hindering the development of our young rookies and such"
A. I.: “WHAT!!!”
Walsh: “Yeh, again sorry no choice had ta waive ya”
A. I. : “It’s only been 5 minutes!!!!!”
Walsh: “Sorry, that’s just the way the NBA is. You’re a vet, you understand.”
A. I. : “****#####((( You and $#*&^$ New York!!!!!”
Walsh: Just for that, I waaas gonna ease the sting with complimentary tickets to the Mike Dantoni Show but not anymore so there!!!

actually
I don’t think it is over…I’m not mad that they didn’t sign him but I still think he’s a low risk way to improve the team. Now Donnie Walsh is shrewd if nothing else. I’ve heard the arguement about TD’s development and while I don’t think Iverson would hinder him at all (especially when they could just start Iverson at either the one or two spot) I think Walsh is leaving the situation open ended for now. Ideally they’ll test the waters with Douglas starting, and if he can handle it and hughes keeps up his current level of play at the two no A.I. needed.
BUT….
should TD not be ready to take the reigns just yet, I think Walsh would go back over the Iverson deal if he’s still available.
I am at least glad they thought about it and didn’t just write it off, because even in that win we didn’t play well and 2-9 still aint great.
There is a difference between losing and being losers. Right now, we look like losers.
We not only do we take plays off, we take quarters off.
At least by having the discussion about Iverson, Walsh showed this season still matters ,wins still count and he’d explore any option to make us better despite the year not being 2010
