Knicks, Hornets, Rockets trade
So Britt Robson, over at Inside the NBA, wrote about his thoughts on the state of the Hornets, and a potential fire sale in New Orleans.
He surmises that if rookie Darren Collison proves himself a competent floor general, that coupled with him making $12.3 million dollars less then CP3, majority owner George Shinn may be forced to make a move to save money in light of serious financial hardships in one of the smallest markets in the country.
So his comments got me thinking ... how in the heck NY can take advantage of the situation and land CP3 with this roster!
Running the numbers, it seems that by moving Eddy Curry ($10.5, 2yrs), Wilson Chandler ($1.2, 2yrs + team options) & Cuttino Mobley ($9.5, 1yr), while taking in Chris Paul ($13.5, 4yr) and Emeka Okafor ($10.7, 6yr) this unlikely scenario actually becomes possible under the cap rules.
New Orleans, while losing a superstar player in CP3, would save $12.563 mill this season because an insurance company is paying Mobley's contract due to his health condition, and they would save around $43 million dollars over the next 5 years by shedding Okafor's long term deal for Curry's short term one.
Now here comes the 2010 cap space issue!
New York is currently about $30.315 mill over the $57.7 million dollar cap, that's a payroll of $88.015 million dollars. Thanks to moves by Donnie Walsh, NY will shed $57,753,943 million dollars, or there abouts. That purging of 7 expiring contracts creates about $30,261,593 million dollars in cap room, which is nice but not enough to sign two $20 million dollar a year players, which is what a Lebron James/Dwayne Wade go for these days.
Now if NYK did the deal with NO, then that brings in $24.318 million dollars (2 players) while moving $21.255 million (3 players) over to the Hornets. That means NY just subtracted $3.063 million from their cap room, now totaling $27.198 million dollars. Not enough to sign both Lebron and Bosh but hey NY got CP3 in the deal so a pairing of LBJ & CP3 is even better then a pairing of LBJ & CB4.
Now assuming NY manages this trade with New Orleans, how do they create even more cap room for 2010??? Well with the trade for CP3 a done deal that makes Emeka Okafor the player that must be moved; so with that in mind lets examine the Houston Rockets.
With the Rockets intent on moving T-Mac's $22.8 million dollar expiring contract, and in serious need of a center with Yao injured, the Knicks and 27 year old Emeka Okafor (who is always healthy) seem like potential trade partners. New York can move Okafor and Larry Hughes ($13.6mill, 1yr), both players that play good defense, which is something Houston head coach Rick Adelman stresses, and Houston can finally be done with T-Mac and his disruptive presence.
Now switching T-Mac's expiring contract for Okafor's long term deal should raise the Knicks cap space from $27.1 million to about $39.2 million dollars. That kind of cap room is more then enough to land LBJ & CB4.
I know what you all are thinking. This man is crazy!!! Maybe so! But hey crazier things have happened, just examine the list below vvv
Crazy Trades
1. Pau to Lakers for Brown.
2. 2 Lottery picks traded away for Eddy Curry by Thomas
3. 2 Lottery picks traded away for Stephon Marbury by Thomas
4. Kobe Bryant traded on draft night by Charlotte to Lakers
Crazy stuff happens I tell ya!!!

The Hornets are not that desperate to shed salary.
They’d lose money with a minimum NBA team salary if they traded CP3, no one would go to games.
I don’t see how this season they will trade CP3. Maybe a draft night trade or something like that, but no reason for it now.
…especially to the Knicks.

Ah but they are losing money ...
… tons of it!
Fact of the matter is no one is watching their games right now anyway, even with CP3. If Collison proves himself to be a cheaper option for New Orleans at the point, they may very well be forced to make a move.
In this economy, saving $12 million dollars this season is A LOT of money, and of course saving $43 over the next five seasons makes even more sense financially. Those kinds of savings would put the Hornets in good position to either sell the team or force a move to a better market, the latter of which is a much rumored consideration of their current owner.
I know New Orleans doesn’t want to lose CP3 but the point of this trade is that NY is able to absorb their biggest long term contracts, which is key to their financial restructuring of the Hornets. New York can even take in Stojakovic’s 3yr $13.3 million dollar deal off of New Orleans hands, so long as Chris Duhon, Al Harrington and Hornets SG Devin Brown’s 1yr $1.1 million dollar deal is thrown in. The numbers work for these two teams to pull it off.
That’s $38.8 million dollars the Hornets would be able to move over to New York this season, that’s three long term contracts of $10 million + per year that would no longer be on their payroll. Plus they would be getting a young player, on a cheap rookie scale, in Wilson Chandler. No other team can offer the Hornets those kinds of savings, on top of giving up a young player.
Now as long as NY can move Okafor’s contract over to Houston, they would still have around $26 million dollars in cap room, more then enough to sign Lebron James, even with Stojakovic’s $13.3 mill o the books.
To recap:
CP3, T-Mac, Stojakovic & Brown too NYK. (star + cap space)
Chandler, Curry, Duhon, Harrington, Mobley too New Orleans. ($$$ + very young player)
Okafor & Hughes too Houston (healthy young center + no more T-Mac)
Yea you said that all already
That is one of the most homerific trades I’ve ever heard. Just stop.

i would think
that a team in so much financial trouble that it has to trade chris paul for spare parts should probably just call it a day and fold. not saying that that’s actually the case for N.O., but yeah.
i can't garuntee
but i wouldn’t be surprised if seattle would pay the price to inherit chris paul.

This would be
like the Mets trading Seaver. I’ve seen this happen in baseball but not in basketball.
I can understand the Hornets being desperate for $$.. but they still have to sell it to their fans in some way, and I don’t think that Chandler would be enough. Even assuming they were absolutely desperate for $$, I think several teams would be clamoring to make this deal, and therefore some combo of Gallo or Hill or a first round pick (2012 would be the earliest the Knicks could give them) would have to do it. Because some other team could probably give them a 2010 first rounder.
i bet
the magic would trade all-star point guard jameer nelson and every pick for the next five years for chris paul. plus they migth as well swap carter for stojakovic. plus they’ll give gortat, brandon bass and ryan anderson for okafor. plus, they would have the best starting lineup in the game bar-none.
chris paul
anybody
rashard lewis
anybody
dwight howard
okafor off the bench. they would be so clean. kobe’s breath would stink for the rest of his career.

this never works, because either
a) the Hornets are a legitimate NBA franchise who wouldn’t give away their best player for pennies on the dollar.
or
b) the Hornets can’t afford CP3 any more, but can easily find a deal 10 times better than the Knicks/Rockets pu-pu platter.

exactly...
wouldn’t you think the Hornets would be smart enough to trade CP3 for someone like…Derrick Rose?

it works on paper but not in real life
sorry dude. You make the numbers work, but the practicality of it is not there. The Hornet may be losing money, but they were losing money over the summer and chose to unload Tyson Chandler for a more expensive Emeka Okafor. With this season only a month complete, no way have things fallen far enough financially for Shinn to pull a fire sale. They have no reason to move CP3 right now, as his contract is up in 2011, plus every team is holding back money for the 2010 bonanza. They have no reason to panic about possibly moving the top PG a year in advance. Even if they did, they would certainly have look to receive much more than expiring contracts.
BTW, if the Knicks were to get a defensive presence like Emeka Okafor… no fucking way would they dump him. He can run. He can block. He can rebound. No reason to move a high quality Center when we are looking for one.
File this under the Fantasy NBA2K11.

Keep Dream'in
Thank you for that beautiful fairy tail. I no longer have nightmares about the Knicks not winning a title for 100 years. A blog like this will have Knick fans praying for another hurricane! But, we have have enough longshots to pray for..like Lebron or Stoudamire or Bosh.
