Not That I Have Any Use For McGrady
or for any players who wear other uniforms, other than as fodder for the basketball execution of current New York Knickerbockers. But given the speculation that is out there about McGrady, theoretically, just what are the Rockets up to?
They don't seem to want McGrady to play. They're open to trading him, apparently, but, like us, they don't want to take on any 2010 salary. So they're looking to take back other expiring contracts for McGrady's. They're currently playing pretty good basketball and they're in contention for a playoff spot.
Conclusion: They don't want McGrady around, and don't think he can help them win more games or succeed in the playoffs this season. What do they want in return? Expiring contracts, but with an advantage over McGrady's expiring contract. So... what they are looking for is players with expiring contracts that will help them more this season than McGrady would. Or, they could be looking for expring contracts regardless of the value, and a draft pick or two.
How many teams have enough expiring contracts to match McGrady's mammoth deal? Not many. The Rockets will not have many options here. Sure, the Knicks could give them a bunch of expiring contracts, but why would the Rockets (or the Knicks for that matter) bother?
Unless the Rockets are desperate to get McGrady out of the locker room, they'll probably hold out for a deal that doesn't add salary, gets them some size up front, and gets them a draft pick or two.
The Knicks are trying to get them to take Jeffries, but I just don't see how, from their perspective, Jeffries helps them enough to take on his salary for 2010-11. They might do something like that for a really good power forward but for Jeffries? Unlikely.
I think there's a pretty good chance McGrady, who is only 30, still has some very good basketball in him. I'm intrigued, but what could the Knicks offer that would give them what they're looking for? Some combination of expirings including Darko Milicic and Al Harrington, plus one of our second rounders? Might get it done. I don't think there's much chance that we can re-sign Harrington, but I'm not sure it's worth it to give up one of those draft picks.
Alternatively, a package involving Jordan Hill might entice them - they'd only have to take on Hill's rookie scale salary for next year. But why would the Knicks do that, when they don't even know if they want to re-sign McGrady (or if they even can?) A deal with Hill included would only work if we got their 2010 first round pick. But would they want Hill over a late-mid first rounder? It's a crapshoot - they might get a better PF with the pick.
I don't see this deal happening. I can't find a way for it to make sense to both teams.

a three team deal
Knicks trade: Mobley and Milicic to Hou, Jeffries and Hill to Clippers $3 mil to both Clippers and Houston. 2010 2nd rounder also heads to Hou
Houston: trades T-Mac and Cook to Knicks, $3 mil to clips
Clippers: trade R. Davis and Collins to Hou, Butler to Knicks.
A few execptions out there too

Clippers could use a good young power-forward.

why would we give up jordan hill for mcgrady?
an 8th overall pick hould develop into an allstar, and that’s what i expect of hill, if he gets playing time.

Its the cost NYK has to pay for 2010 cap space
Nate could be substituted especially since his agent asked for a trade.

yeah they could
yeah, someone like Blake Griffin would be nice

Rockets will have to waive one player to make this work
most likely Collins

Jordan Hill does not get traded for McGrady.
that’s essentially throwing him away.
Take out Hill…put in Nate….you got a deal.
Don’t wanna see Nate go, but I think its getting obvious they don’t want him here.

NYK has to put in a sweetener to make this trade work
Nate was a option but i haven’t tested it out on the trade machine. Another problem is that he is BYC, thats why I chose Hill to make things work. If Nate works this could work out for the three teams.

Its fine if you made it work....
but I really hope the Knicks aren’t using a trade machine to do their trades.
I have no problem with the trade…just, lets keep the youngins and get rid of the guy the team has a problem with (for whatever reason with Nate)

I think its wasted effort
There is no reason for the Rockets to move T-Mac if they cant get what they want in return. NY has no intention of trading Jordan Hill and and such for a guy who they have no intention of keeping anyways. The Clippers have their nucleus set and really dont need to make this move either. Its easy to throw around the Knicks we want to get rid of in a trade, but if the Rockets like their on-court chemistry now, why would they want to add guys like Ricky Davis, Darko Milicic, Al Harrington? Every one of those guys has a rep of NOT being team oriented. The Clippers also just drafted Blake Griffin #1, and also have 6’8" Al Thornton, Marcus Camby and Chris Kaman to hold down their frontline. I don’t see why they would want Jordan Hill.
This really doesn’t help any of the teams involved. It just gets us to shuffle our expirings around and push guys we don’t want (Hill aside) on our team, onto another team thathas thier positions filled already.

Question
Those of you who covet McGrady…why? Because he’s expiring? Because you think he can actually contribute?
I’m not sure I follow the logic in all of these comments.
I dont covet McGrady
the Knicks’ front office does, and I proposed a possible scenario. McGrady can contribute, ableit not as his All-Star days. Is Mobely and MIlicic + a unused Nate Robinson better than McGrady and Rasual Butler?

i dont think NY covets McGrady, and even if they did Mobs, Mils, and Robs is enough.
from the Rockets point of view. They were hesitant to bring McGrady back early because they like the way their team is playing. How does Darko and Nate help them? We obviously don’t want them because we seem to think they mess up OUR team chemistry (which i disagree, but thats another topic). T-Mac, while we can’t dismiss his talent, is not much different than another Al Harrington (albiet more skilled). He desperately wants to be a leader but has never been able to be a consistent one. Between constant injuries and bruised egos as his teams tend to do better once he leaves. But regardless, his name carries sizable value, so Houston has no need to send off such talent for NYs waste.
Seth, I’m with you, I don’t see the logic in NY bringing Tracy McGrady here. Of course we know Houston wants to move him, but I can’t imagine they would want to move one Chemistry Contricter (T-Mac) to bring in NYs Chemistry Contricters.
