Sergio Rodriguez
Hey guys!
First of all, I want to introduce myself,
I'm Daniel, from Barcelona. I usually post on blazersedge.com, and I have a question for you: What do you think about Sergio Rodriguez?
There's been a lot of speculation around him, and looks like he's going to be traded this summer, and D'Antoni's Knicks look like one of the best fits.
I'll copypaste a piece I wrote about him two weeks ago:
Sergio was a raising star in Spain.
He came to the Blazers à la Rudy, knowing he’d make at least twice as much staying in Europe, but he wanted to come because of the challenge.
19 year old playing with the pros in Spain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9vmcTN4Lc4His style of play relies a lot on confidence. If he feels he can, he just takes over the game, he forces his rythm into everyone, which his teammates are used to, and his opponent usually aren’t. This makes him (if used well) an amazing PG off the bench, as he’s capable of turning a game upside down changing the flow of the game.
See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPFEUA1pGeIHe knows how to play big games. He forced Spain into the World Championship’s final back in 2006. Seehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyxdHjrCl2c
When he came to Portland he soon became a fan favorite, even when he barely played (he had the likes of Dan Dickau or Juan Dixon over him in the rotation). 10 easy baskets were not enough for Nate at the expense of 2 TO.
He turned 20 the year he came to Portland. A young World Champion with great attitude who passed on the big money to come to the other side of the world to play with the best.
His teammates loved him, the fans loved him, but his coach was busy talking to the press about everything he didn’t like about him. Two different point guards, two opposite ways of understanding the game, and there he was Sergio, he knew he had to please his coach, so he kept practicing and trying his best to adapt his game to please his coach and have a chance, but what did he found? His minutes decreased by 1/3 on his second season.
And then during his 3rd season, after spending all the summer practicing to improve his weak spots, his coach benches him.
He has made all kind of sacrifices to please Nate, he’s playing the opposite of his style, losing money and being away of his family and girlfriend just to find disrespect.
He’s just 22, but the way I see it, he’s wasted 3 very valuable years of his carreer trying to please someone who can’t appreciate his gifts.
I think he still has it in him, he’s putted all his effort on the Blazers, and he deserves what’s best for him.
He can still do things like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qKGWhHADlE#t=3m59s
Either KP did a mistake drafting him or Nate as a coach, and I’d say it’s the last one.
I’d love KP to do something for him, he deserves it, and now it’s the moment to do it. It’s very hard for a player getting signed as a FA after 4 seasons of barely playing, just give him a chance, here or anywhere else, the kid deserves it, he’s served well the Blazers, and he deserves a chance.

honestly i haven't seen sergio play at all
i never see portland games since they’re on too late for me to care, and i skipped that playoff series (POR/HOU) since it was such a boring matchup.
but i do really like sergio when i play NBA 2k9. good backup PG on the teams that i fantasy drafted. seems like he could fit on the Knicks, but i wouldn’t want to give up a whole lot to get him.

looks like they're shopping him
maybe the 8th for their 24th, 32nd and Sergio or something like that
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
honestly i wouldn't mind that deal
i’m not sure what kind of value the Knicks can get with the 8th pick considering how weak this Draft is.
i mean is there really that wide of a gap between guys like Jrue Holiday and Jeff Teague (projected in the 20’s) and the guys projected in the lottery like Stephen Curry, Eric Maynor, Wayne Ellington? i really don’t think so.
Ewing with the step...YES! and the foul!

he would be a good fit
but he crowds an already crowded back court. i’d take him over duhon for certain.
i like sergio's game.
he’s a damn talented offensive player, and has a bunch of the things i would like from a nashian point in a dantoni system: he’s fast as hell, he throws funky, creative passes, he can get to the bucket, and he can (sort of) shoot. and that’s exactly what i’d like from the knicks point guard.
daniel – now, it’s your turn to help us out by answering a very important question: how do you pronounce sergio llull’s last name? i speak spanish, but… that’s out of my range.
His surname is in catalan, a different language spoken in the east and northeast of Spain
If I’m not mistaken it should be pronounced something like “djuy”
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
do you ever watch ricky play over there?
I want him in blue and orange so bad it hurts.

Shooting and D are his weaknesses
But he is 7th in assists per 48/min on the slowest team in the league.

Sergio could be amazing on the Knicks. I'd love to see Sergio and Amare on the same team. Make the Suns 2.0 in NY.
You and I will share all that we know--so close your eyes and just let yourself go.
the only problem is that opposing guards could slip under the pick, making it a little harder to execute. He needs to pull his shooting percentages up to 38-39%, which is possible considering his 36% this year (accounting for heaves).

Sergio isn't a bad shooter
It’s just lack of confidence, just take a look at how his %’s dropped after his first season.
Depending on how he’s coached he’ll turn out one way or another, PG’s usually take some seasons to blossom in the NBA, and he’s as old as any seniors coming to the league.
The real problem he has is that McMillan’s system doesn’t fit him. When he plays for the Blazers he’s playing to his weaknesses, and those are things basketball fans don’t usually think or care about.
If you saw ‘06 World Championship, his coach just told him he had his backup minutes, and if controlled the game he’d stay. That’s all he needs, and what McMillan won’t give him, but for Spain it worked out pretty well with Sergio destroying Argentina (Nocioni, Oberto, Scola, Ginobili, Hermann…) in the semis.
Nobody expects a Spanish Acquisition!
Actually, He isn;t a great shooter
I’m in Portland and I like Sergio — but he’s definitely not a good match for the was the nate McMillan wan’t this team to play offense.
He’s a pretty good passer, and he does drive to set up assist opportunities. However, until he can be a legitimate offensive threat he doesn’t keep defenses honest.
He’s no Nash, so the Suns 2.0 won’t be with him.
Krypto-Nate and a future 2nd probably gets Sergio right now.
Sergio and Rudy probably need to be broken up. Sergio and Nate McMillan are a bad fit. Nate McMillan has a pet peeve in regards to the defense his PGs play. Sergio is developing a bad habit of looking for Rudy a little too much, too.
Blazers fans have been discussing whether all it takes is a generic future 2nd to get Sergio right now. It probably takes a little more than a 1 future 2nd, but probably not a whole lot more.
Keep Portland Weird.
that would probably have to start
at Sergio and a 2nd rounder for Nate, not the other way around.
