Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Multiple sources confirmed that the Knicks have discussed a potential blockbuster trade between the teams that would land the fifth overall pick and allow the Knicks to keep their spot at No. 8. The deal likely would have to include one of the team's most valuable assets, swingman Wilson Chandler, which would be a difficult decision.

This scenario also might include Larry Hughes going back to Washington in exchange for guard Mike James, a Long Island product, and a big man such as Etan Thomas or Brendan Haywood. All of the players involved have expiring contracts.

The bold move by the Knicks, however, would not be to target Thabeet or even Spanish guard Ricky Rubio. It appears more likely that Davidson's Stephen Curry or Memphis' Tyreke Evans are the more coveted prospects.

The Knicks then could use their own pick at No. 8 to land Arizona power forward Jordan Hill, if he still is on the board. If not, there is Duke's Gerald Henderson or USC's DeMar DeRozan to consider as potential replacements for Chandler.

trading chandler could be a mistake

maybe he won’t be a mega-star, but having a guy capable of scoring 18-20 ppg and defending the other team’s best player is valuable. i mean, andre iguodala got a huge deal and chandler is poised to become that type of player.

although i will admit that donnie is sort of a genius on this, since having two rotation players on rookie deals + the rookie years on gallo’s deal would make it very easy to manage the cap and snag a franchise guy. chandler will be due for an extension in a few years, and that may be a problem down the road.

Tempting

Very Tempting. No way I would have swapped Chandler for the 5th pick, but having the 5th and 8th is pretty tantalizing. I mean think about it… that’s two lottery picks, which cuts our chances of getting bust in half. One pick could bust, but what’s the probability of both busting? One of them would have to pan out well if not both.
Then again, Chandler is panning out so well, and he’s only going to get better. He’s also a player with a unique skill set, and there’s nobody in the top 10 that could replace what he does. Nobody else on the current roster can replace what he does either. I think I vote “NO” but I am tempted.

Wow

I don’t think Walsh will pull the trigger, but wow. I would do it if I had the choice. Plus, James Harden might be availabe at 5. If Grizzlies pass on Rubio, Thunder will draft him, and the Kings don’t need a SG, so they take Tyreke Evans. Either way, I would feel confident with any of these 2 players…James Harden, Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry, Jordan Hill, Brandon Jennings

This is tough.

However, I just so happen to HATE Jordan Hill.

They do this for a living, though, and know far more than I do.
I would miss Wilson. He’s still so goddamn young.

i also dislike Hill

and i’d rather use Chan in a deal which included unloading either Curry or Jeffries’ contracts. he’s a valuable piece.

i think the best case scenario (if the trade ended up going through) would be getting Tyreke Evans at #5 and then getting DeRozan/Clark (agreeing with Free Bradshaw below) at #8.

i’m starting to think that Evans could end up being the 2nd best player in the Draft. also, even though DeRozan/Clark are raw, they seen to have similar skill sets to Chan. i especially like Clark from watching him at Louisville. he can’t shoot worth a lick (which sucks), but i’m not sure if there is a more athletic player in the Draft.

I don't like trading Wilson

yet if somewhere in there this is the deal that does indeed include Jeffries or GASP! Eddy Curry?

I like Willie Chan as much as anyone too, but I think everyone knows that the Knicks will probably have to part with once of either Lee, Robinson or Chandler in order to get rid of the dead weight.

Chandler can be moved before draft day, so that’s probably why.

I actually think a guy like Derozan or even Earl Clark at #8 would actually give the Knicks a player with more potential than WIllie Chan.

I guess everything Isiah must go, tho Chandler was one thing he got right.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 22, 2009 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

This deal

would make a lot of sense if dead weight is apart of it. I don’t think so tho cuz the Wizards main reason for this is to shed some $$$ that they’d have to pay the #5

I think that if its really on the table, that it only gets done if either Curry or Evans is on the board at #5.

Only reason Im kinda sure is cuz the Wizards have said for a while that they want to trade the #5. Chandler makes a lot less than the #5 will, and actually being as young as he is he would be worth a #5 pick this season.

i'd love to dump larry hughes

but it hurts to see wilson go if jeffries is gonna stay.

i would package both picks for the number 2 or something.

Ayeee.

If it were just about anyone other than Wil, I’d be ecstatic.

But..I dont know. Seeing him go get good somewhere else would hurt, especially if the number five doesn’t pan out.

Tempting, but no.

if we could get rid

of jj in this deal, then I am on board. If we have to hang on to him, then I say no.

The idea of drafting a starting backcourt is kinda cool.

Getting Curry, Evans, Rubio, or whoever at #5 and then Henderson, DeRozan, T-Will, etc. at number 8 would be pretty cool.

Parting with Chandler would be terrible, though. He’s just a boy!

i agree entirely

i had my sights set on dumping curry or jeffries in tandem with chandler. so it’s somewhat unsettling to lose chandler for somewhat unknown commodities and still be laid up with these broken parts.

Yeah

But he plays the same position as our best player (Go Cock!), so trading him isn’t the nuttiest idea in the world.

Terrence Williams

is a name you don’t hear about for some reason. Much like the reasons I like Holliday and Evans, Williams is 6’6 and an incredible athlete.

Also he was a ‘point forward’, tho I really think of point forwrads like Hedo Turkoglu when using that word (6"6 is big for PG tho).

I don’t think Williams is a guy you have to grab at #8 either. Maybe a team that really likes someone at #8 (provided of course the Knicks make this trade for #5), Id trade down.

I like Terrence Williams about as much as anyone in the mid to late part of round 1. Much better than guys like Gerald Henderson or even Derozan cuz T-Will can handle the rock. I really have no problem if all player from 1-4 can handle the ball, Im sure Pringles like that in his O.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 23, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think

T-Will will be more of an Anthony Randolph type player. More so than a Hedo.

And i’d be happy with trading down a few (5-7) spots to take em’, especially if we can still pick up a Flynn or a Holiday.

I actually

see Williams as Wilson Chandler, except with the ability to run an offense.

You also can’t underrate that he was the unquestioned leader of Louisville, a team with a ton of NBA cailber players at that.

I think Turkoglu’s best attribute is the fact he’s 6"10, but 6’6 point forwards aren’t exaclty a dime a dozen either.

I mean I know this is a stretch, but does’t T-Will seem like Pippen type player? At first I see a James Posey type, but when you realize that he’s such a good ball handler, and my favorite the fact that he’s an excellent defender (you have to be to play for Pitino).

If the Knicks trade down from #8 to get Williams, then get a 2nd round pick? Don’t know what to do with that 2nd rounder, but I like AJ Price. that may be a bit too many guards tho

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 23, 2009 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

T-Will

first off, Terrence Williams would be a major reach at #8. he’s projected in the 15-25 range in most mocks. so unless the Knicks trade down, he’s not worth discussing.

i like T-Will’s athleticism/defense but i’m not sure where the comparisons to Chandler/Turkuglo are coming from – Williams is 6’6 and he can’t shoot (40% FG, 32% 3-PT at Louisville).

a 6’6 wing that can’t shoot doesn’t sound like someone that would excel in D’Antoni’s offensive system.

well that's why I said trade down for him

……..

His shooting was very inconsistent. His shot could use work, but he’s not really a ""wing" player, he’s a ball-handler. Is he a PG? Don’t think so, but I think he’s a SF that you can let run the offense. The Knicks trade down and grab him that would be a nice player to have. He has as much athleticsim as Willie Chan too, and its really not like Chandler has the greatest shot either.

And its really all for naught anyway, the Wizards look like they’re sending the pick to the T-Wolves for Randy Foye and Mike Miller.

I got no problem with it either, I really didn’t want to trade Chandler anyway.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 23, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

if Rubio or cap clearing isn’t involved I want nothing to do with it.

We know what we’re getting with Chandler, nobody knows how Evans or Derozen is going to pan out in the pro game. Bottom line, odds are whoever the knicks would get with the pick wouldn’t be as productive as Chandler. and I’m tired of this organization taking chances.

by pmsjerk on Jun 23, 2009 12:46 PM EDT reply actions

I have a feeling

i think we’ll trade Chandler and he’ll avg 10pts a game for Washington until one fateful night the wiz will play the Knicks in a crucial game vital for playoff contention and he’ll torch us for 60…all off sick dunks.

If the team plays well, Walsh will be a genius and if not he can lick the circumference of my balls…in a totally non gay way of course!!!

lol.

If there ever was a season where making the playoffs regardless of the fact you have no chance mattered.

Id love to sneak in as the 8th seed next season
