Draft Day 2009
It's here. The date is June 25th, 2009, which means that the next 24 hours will be wrought with nonsense for your Knicks and teams around the league. In fact, the league-wide mayhem has already kicked off.
On the home front, we've been treated to a slew of rumors, the most recent of which was that of Donnie Walsh purchasing a late first round pick, which still hasn't quite happened. There are also trades on the table and like a dozen prospects rumored to be Knick targets.
This thread shall be the all-encompassing forum in which to discuss tomorrow's excitement. I was granted a last-minute opportunity to attend the draft, so I'm not sure how much I'll be around before and during the event. My computer's coming with me, but I'm not positive how much time and access I'll have, internet-wise. If I can post, all updates will stay in this thread. If I'm not here, be sure to check out the Twitter. Also, I recently found out about some new and pretty cool stuff I'll get to do tomorrow, which will become apparent in due time. I will say that if you're going to the draft, or just feel like stopping by beforehand, look for me hanging around the Garden in the hours preceding the main event. I'll want to talk.
Let's do this.
Update: First topic for the comments: Who's your guy? I really can't decide, but I think mine's either Rubio or Curry. Or Jennings. Or Evans. Or Holiday.
Update: Rumblings of a Lee-to-OKC deal in July, with Rubio being the main return.
11:19 a.m.: Gonna start doing it this way. Call it a mini live-blog. I'll be sharing links and any news I come across. For the moment, here's Joey.
2:23 p.m.: In the city now. Currently at a Starbucks near the Garden. Apparently the Knicks got the Lakers' 29th, which is awesome. They could chase down one of those shooting guards I mentioned yesterday, or perhaps go big with it. I'll probably be lingering around the corner of 33rd and 8th in a bit. Look for me. Also, check out my stylings from yesterday at Ball Don't Lie.
10:42 p.m.: Just read pretty much all the comments here. I don't mind Hill and Ghostface seems like a possible sleeper. It just doesn't feel done. Meanwhile, did anybody see me with the Israeli flag-wielding guys???

My pick would be..
Tyreke Evans or Brandon Jennings then Steph Curry. With the 28th pick Jermaine Taylor or Jodie Meeks
by mightykingcrayon on Jun 25, 2009 2:49 AM EDT reply actions
and with the 8th pick...
the knicks select gerald henderson… outside of rubio there is no sure thing at the PG spot. And with the glaring hole at the SG spot Henderson makes the most sense. If we could get minnesota’s 18th pick I would love to have jeff teague. If we get a pick in the 20s I wouldn’t mind Chase Buddinger either.

Nah.
I like Henderson, but not at #8. I compared him to Allan Houston but then I was called a racist jackass (I was comparing the nice jumper, some one else pointed out they are both tall, skinny and light skintined.)
I mean the fact that he’d get booed out of the building is not really reason to pass on him, but just no, not at #8.
I mean I really wouldn’t hate if they got that late pick and drafted say…Darren Collison who I think is the most underrated player in the draft.
But a player like Holliday or Jennings just has too much potential. Henderson may end up being good, but he just seems like he’s a finished product already. He seems to be a different sort of Duke player, he seems more like Dahantay Jones with an outside shot, so maybe there is something there?

Johnny Flynn
None of these point guards have proven anything except for Flynn who already has excelled at the Garden on one of the biggest stages in college basketball. He’s a gritty leader with a 40+ vertical.
I will be at the draft tonight. Let’s hope that the Knicks make something happen.
Flynn
is Nate Robinson (maybe not that short, but the fact he’s an inch shorter than Ty Lawson just about tells it) without the scoring ability. I think I’ll pass.

ford confident in harden at #8?
can’t read this, but that’s apparently what he’s saying. that’d be nice.
Posting and Toasting: "Say yo Oak, what's the dish tonight? A couple steaks on the grill and we season it right."
his confidence is based on some funny decisions
Confidence level: 80 percent
Analysis: The Knicks will be disappointed if Curry, Rubio, Hill and Evans are all off the board. But they’ll still be relieved to find Harden here. The Knicks believe the draft is seven players deep and Harden is one of those seven.
If Harden is snatched up by the Thunder or the Timberwolves, they look at Jrue Holiday, Brandon Jennings, DeMar DeRozan and Gerald Henderson. I think they will prioritize point guard and Holiday has a very slim lead over Jennings.
YO!
Im saying,
James Harden would be a god send. I really don’t say his name cuz I really doubted he falls to the Knicks.
BUt the dude can ball. I mean comparing players to NBAer is mainly a waste, but Harden reminds me of a LH Paul Pierce, you cuz Harden looks like he’s running in quick sand but still gets to teh hole.
And plus, it allow us to have Ill Cock to pass on to Hard-EN!

other than a cock holiday backcourt which sounds ridiculous.

nate's twitter

Posting and Toasting: "Say yo Oak, what's the dish tonight? A couple steaks on the grill and we season it right."
he's cheered up
“Play n the nintendo wii wit my kids, and the act like they are speed racer and racerX lol great times”
can't just draft on potential...
… and certainly not when you… have gaping holes in your lineup, players who can’t adequately defend their position, are tryin to be in the playoff hunt AND trying to court big time talent in 2010… Im not saying i dont want young players to develop, but waiting for Holliday to pan out could take 4 years… seriously.
and if henderson already looks like a finished product, then what does harden look like…. no disrespect but he is no Paul Pierce. Harden looks like he will be one of the disappointments of this class along with Jordan Hill.
make no mistake if the knicks got jennings, or derozan and some one else further down i would be pretty excited with those prospects as well… i feel henderson comes in and gives us a lift immediately.

Henderson
adds defense which is good. also, he’s a safe pick, but so was Channing Frye.
if Evans or Harden (somehow) are available at #8, i don’t think the Knicks can’t pass up the opportunity to draft a talent like that. i’m much more confident in either of those players, epecially Evans, panning out than Jennings, DeRozan or even Rubio.

i want rubio or jennings. point blank. curry works, but he’d be the nail in nate’s coffin. evans would be ok with me. but he doesn’t fit as clearly as the others.
honestly though, jennings would put ankles around the league on notice. night in and night out. i think he’s worth the (so-called) risk.

Damn wouldnt be depressing if...
We trade D-Lee for Rubio and he turns out to be a bust?
by mightykingcrayon on Jun 25, 2009 12:45 PM EDT reply actions
Well....
Here’s the deal, what if he left the NY Knicks for nothing? I mean if he just signed a contract elsewhere and took off, then you would lose him effectively for nothing.
Plus, if you follow the NBA, you know that undersized rebounders wear down pretty quickly. I just don’t think that the Knicks can ultimately afford what he wants and I think D Lee is such a great guy that I WANT him to go and get his payday. I just don’t think that’s with the Knicks.
So that being said, it definitely softens the blow if they can somehow do that and get like Jordan Hill at #8? Wow. Just wow. If that somehow falls into place, I’m going to send Donnie Walsh a cigar.
Amen
All stories of Walsh’s draft acumen always focus on his picking Reggie Miller.
In 1985.
Other than that, his draft history is, as Bill Simmons memorably put it, drafting white guys about a dozen picks too early. (It checks out.)
Other than Frye, Isiah would pick the best guy he thought was around, regardless of who was expected to go where. He would pick Lawson (this year’s Damon Stoudamire).

well...
in donnie basketball’s defense, he was in a wildly different market called “indiana”. and he is from new york. he ain’t no out-and-out shlub. and as much as i furiously despise reggie miller and the entire miller family, he was a good pick. and smits was good, and them daivs mopes had their time. even derrick mckey was decent. and of course… he had the acumen enough to take ron artest over frederic weis. that, to me, says it all.
twitter.com/aighttho
Rik Smits (1988)
and Dale Davis (1991) were both draft picks that played huge roles in the successful Pacers teams of the 90’s.
plus i think Donnie made up for some poor drafts by trading Davis for Jermaine O’Neal and dealing a pu-pu platter headlined by Ron Mercer for Brad Miller and Ron Artest.

wasn't even that great at that
renaldo, despite being a diamond in the rough or whatever, was picked right before rondo, farmar, and shannon brown. all of whom probably would have been more helpful.
and he also took channing frye 8th and, like, mardy collins.
especially
if they manage to pry away a late 20’s pick,
Isiah finding Willie Chan and some disagree but Balkman was pretty good considering many of those late 20’s picks don’t ever play.

Zeke had an eye for talent
but it’s a myth that he was this omniscent Draft super-guru.
case in point:
2005 – Channing Frye over Andrew Bynum
2006 – Renaldo Balkman over Rajon Rondo
2006 – Mardy Collins over ANYBODY
Lee, Robinson, Ariza, McGrady were all great picks, but he had his swings-and-misses too.

But ESPN.com did a pretty persuasive analysis that Isiah has been the second best drafter, after Bryan Colangelo, of the past 20 years.

draft picks for nothing!
nba draft has us picking toney douglas, which is funny, because we really randomly debated him for a long time. then again, no draft website has ever correctly predicted a pick lower than 20, so, hey, who cares.
I hope not Toney Douglas
I mean the Ghostface thing would be nice, but Id rather have someone who’s good at basketball.
I don’t know where he’s mocked, but Darren COllison and #29 would be nice.
Of course the Holliday-Christmas thing is now more of a possiblity than ever,
I also like a player like Jon Brockman. If they are gonna deal Lee cuz of his shiny new contract, why not get a rebounding white boy to replace him?

what about trading mobley’s contract / 29th pick for eric maynor, who will be selected in the 15-20 range? i’m sure there’s a team in that area that would be able to work something like this out with us. obviously we’d have to take back an expiring contract as well, but the other team could save up to 5-6 million because of the cheaper pick and mobley’s insurance payment

Seemed to me the Magic made it to the finals with a center and forward driven game. That’s what you need, tough on the ball defenders, a great low post defender, and one or two good scorers. Give me Flynn, a facilitator and o-t-b defender, or Henderson, who’s a scorer and lockdown defender. No Curry, no D’Antoni 7 seconds nonsense.
NittanyWhiteOut.com. Arguably the second best Penn State blog I know of.
he was a key piece
but that team revolved around Howard. And Lewis, who plays some solid D. And for a euro, Hedo is manly.

Flynn is NOT an on the ball defender
He’s nate Robinson with NO ability to create a shot.

That’s Curry, you just described.
NittanyWhiteOut.com. Arguably the second best Penn State blog I know of.
Flynn
is a 2-3 Jim Boeheim defender.
Curry can’t leap higher than Me.
Flynn has no jump shot, is 5"10 (as in shorter than Lawson).
He’s a good player, just not with #8.
by FreeBradshaw on Jun 25, 2009 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Flynn
is a shade under 6 foot, and is a major intangibles guy. Plus, he’s a good shooter, penetrator, and passer.
Curry, to me, is Nate Robinson. Without the freakish athleticism
NittanyWhiteOut.com. Arguably the second best Penn State blog I know of.
Id take Curry
in a second if my team was already good and I needed a sniper from the outside.
He is NOT Nash, nor is he even Rubio. He is less of an athlete than JJ Reddick too.
I really hope not. If they trade up I hope its for Evans or HardON.

i'm really sad
because the draft is generally one of my favorite events of the nba year, and yet, i am bored right now. and the first round isn’t even over yet.

everyone always says walsh is a patient guy...
so it would be uncharacteristic of him to do something right away.
i think with minn trading both rubio and flynn… they are saying they will trade one of them. There is no way they go to town with 2 pg’s.
who is it gonna be? my bet is rubio, who does NOT want to play there. Instead of flynn, who we know can put up with the cold of a small town.
Minn can trade rubio to different teams. a 5th pick of the draft readily available in a deal is a big thing. my bet is donnie has already started the convo, and our 2nd pick may be involved.

u swat less than 2 shots a game, u gotta get an inside prescence… gotta do it… knicks made the right choice… Nick cathales or some shit might be around at 29 or toney douglas
i'm sayin the only trade that happened at the draft was lawson to the nuggets for future considerations

McClinton might be a good choice
I like Calathes too now that Justin mentioned him.
To get a Stephen Curry type player at #29 is a good thing…not in the top 10.
And at least I think Minny won’t pick either of them.

Toney will give you quality minutes. He's not likely to be a starter in the NBA but will be an excellent defender coming off the bench and will knock down some shots.
He’s already accustomed to playing in a leadership role in pressure situations.
need to wait
I mean Id like to see Walsh’s reaction to that….
but Hill and TD when you read about them there’s a lot to like at what they are already good at….DEFENSE!
I didn’t know much on Douglas, but considering his best traits are playing defense and lighting up the ACC,…Id say that’s better htan Stephan Curry.
by FreeBradshaw on Jun 25, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I did
If he played in the northeast Id think he was one of those short SG/PG that played for St. Johns a few years ago.
He seems quite nasty. Considering he balled out last year in a very strong year for the ACC, he seems like a nice pick.
I hope he’s fast tho.
by FreeBradshaw on Jun 25, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions
i don't mind Hill that much
he’s a good replacement for Lee if/when they decide to trade him/let him walk.
not sure about Toney. seems like a reach to me with all the talent (Brown, Young, Summers) on the board. and he totally fucked my bracket this year.
note to self: never pick a Leonard Hamilton coached team to do anything.
Ewing with the step...YES! and the foul!
by Anthony Masons Haircut on Jun 25, 2009 10:53 PM EDT reply actions
yea
I would have liked Brown or Summers too…
But the team has Gallo and Chandler so what’s another 6"8 wing player gonna do for them?
Douglas supposedly can guard players much bigger than him, and he scored a lot too.
Guys like Summers and Brown have all the physical stuff, but they really didn’t do much (especially Summers).
Sam Young can ball tho, he seems like the next 2nd round pick to make a big impact. I mean I know 24 might as well be nursing home age for a prospect, but he can ball.
