A Rubio Hypothesis.
Admittedly, I'm in love with Ricky Rubio pause. But I have an objective hypothesis concerning our acquisition of the spicy point guard pause, and here it is:
Rubio was taken 5th overall by the Wolves, who then proceeded to take Jonny Flynn 6th overall. They definitely need a point guard, but they certainly do not need two. This leads us to believe that one of the recent additions will be moved.
First Question: Why would they move one of their picks?
First Answer: As individuals, Rubio and Flynn are both higher-echelon talents. Rubio is Harry Potter with the rock and Jonny Flynn is an excellent energy player who could develop into a starting NBA point guard within the year. In tandem, however, the two playing on the court together simply does not work. One of the them would have to guard the two position, a job of which neither player is capable (Flynn for obvious reasons and Rubio because he's only 6'4" and lacking muscle). This leads me to believe that the Wolves never planned to combine the two guards, as it would be foolish for them to draft a player who would play back-up with the 5th or 6th overall selection. Moving on.
Second Question: Of the two, which one is more likely to be moved?
Second Answer: Rubio. The reason for the is a simple one: Money. Had the Timberwolves planned on keeping Rubio, they would have taken him 6th rather than 5th, so they would pay slightly less considering the rookie pay scale. I could also cite his disappointment with his selection, but I don't read too much into that shit. However, in the NBA, as with every industry, you must follow the dolla signs, bitch.
Third Question: What would make the Knicks his most likely destination?
Third Answer: Need. The Knicks were one of the many teams who went into this draft with a mindset of nabbing a "point guard of the future." From a quick analysis, they were the only team who was unsuccessful. The Kings, Warriors, Bucks, Sixers, etc. all got their players (no matter what Monta Ellis's shooting guard ass has to say about it). Our Knicks, however, remain stagnant with a mediocre Chris Duhon.
Also we must consider the needs of the Timberwolves. They will, in some way, have come out of this draft with a solid point guard. They have have an excellent PF/C in Al Jefferson, and an additional power forward in Kevin Love. A quick glance at the three spot makes any sportsfan want to vomit. With Ryan Gomes and Rodney Carney playing the small forward position, the Wolves need help. I think you guys know where I'm going with this: Wilson Chandler.
Giving up Willie would be painful, but we really need to let the cock spin. You truly do not want to click that.
I'll let you guys go nuts with the trade machine concerning the salaries, but a quick glance at the free agent list shows you plenty of expiring deals on the part of the T-Wolves, and you know we gobble that shit up son pause.
What would you guys think of some fangled deal swapping Willie for Rubio and more burn for Gallo?
Peace.

I've been on the anti
Fraggle campaign for ever since I even heard Rubio’s name metioned in the same sentence as ’Nash".
I mean if it has to be done, Willie Chan needs to be left out of this.
I know the Wolves already have Flynn (who IMO = Nate – shot creation-krypton), but Id try to pawn off Nate considering the team drafted Ghostface Douglas.
Id rather have the team as constructed tho, or at least stay away from all things Rubio or Curry.
I don’t like players that can’t shoot nor defend (Rubio), I don’t like backup SG that don’t defend (Curry) and I especially don’t like non-athletes (Rubio AND Curry).
If anything, Id rather trade Lee when he can be for James Harden. I hope that’s as likely as this Rubio deal tho. I have no problem with the team as is but of course Id rather get some value for Lee and/or Nate if they have to go.

i opened that link in another tab, and by the time it loaded, i finished reading the poast, looked at it, fully figured out what the fuck i was lookin at, i had been there for 31 cock spins. I hang my head in shame.
wilchan makes sense. I read a rumor it was gonna be David Lee in a sign and trade for Rubes, but they need another power forward like they need, well, another point. But frankly I wouldn’t wanna give up Chandler for Rubio. A guy who can score like him, guard the other teams best defender, plus a decent rebounder is hard to come by. But if we could dump Curry’s contract in the process it would be something to think about.

Yeah, Chandler can go up and get oops. Rubio throws them like whoa.

Hearing all this
on how Rubio’s going back to Spain makes it even more likely the Knicks are gonna trade with Minny.
Unfortunately the deal that makes sense involves Willie Chan and not David Lee or Nate. The Wolves already have two 6"8 PF who don’t play defense, but those 2 are much better scorers.
Also Johnny Flynn is an incredible athlete and very short, so its unlikely a sign and trade of Nate goes on there too.
Hopefully teh Wolves simply just love 6"8 PF and take David Lee in a sign and trade cuz I really don’t want to give up Chandler for Rubio and I really like Jordan Hill (no homo at this point, I’ll see if he develops into the next Amare….then there might be some)

one qualm
i like most of what you wrote, but the reason i figure they picked rubio 5 and flynn 6 is because with rubio on the higher pay scale, there’s slightly more incentive for him not to play in spain, whereas flynn would play for minnesota either way.

I don't know if you guys want to hear from a Wolves fan
but, well, Rubio for Chandler is a non-starter. Chandler is nice player, but the Wolves need a franchise changing talent. Rubio very well might not be that, but there’s at least a chance that he is. I don’t want to wait for him, but I will if I have to.
They took Rubio 5th to help him with his buyout, not because they were going to trade him. The Wolves GM has been adamant publicly that they aren’t trading him. He understands how excited the fan base is. For the first time in years. You think he would trade him for Wil Chandler?
I don’t understand the Jonny Flynn pick either. They seem to have some vision of them playing together, which I can’t see, but Rubio is clearly their prize.
Frankly, I can’t conceive of a trade that would make sense for the Wolves for anyone they could conceiveably get. They are a bad team that has to roll the dice to find greatness. Rubio at least has the CHANCE at greatness.
Now, if you offered me Galinari for Jonny Flynn, we can talk.

i think Flynn is less of a risk
and could wind up being a better player than Rubio anyway.
i heard Minnesota wants Chander AND Hill, so i’m guessing that a straight Chandler-Rubio swap isn’t going to happen (so don’t worry).
if Minny didn’t draft Rubio in order to trade him, then that or the Flynn pick are absolutely idiotic. Kahn can say whatever he wants, but if he actually wants me to believe that they want Flynn and Rubio to play in the same backcourt, then that’s laughable.
Rubio won’t play this year in the NBA, and becomes a really valuable trade chip. with Flynn already in tow, it’s only a smart pick if the T’Wolves intend to trade Rubio, which i’m 100^% sure is their intention.

There's talk that the Amare deal might not go through
How about a potential 3-way deal between the Wolves, Warriors and Knicks where the Wolves get Curry, the Warriors get Hill and the Knicks get Rubio?
by All Shook Down on Jun 26, 2009 8:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well, why would the Wolves do that?
They could have had Curry if they wanted him in the draft.
Look, there’s a lot of posturing going on right now. I’m sure MN isn’t his first choice, but when things settle down, don’t be surprised if he does play in MN this year. Yi wound up in Milwaukee after screaming about it too.
Everyone seems to think that the Wovles have no leverage. They actually have a lot of leverage in that they continue to hold his rights even if he goes back to Spain

Knowing that many teams coveted Rubio
Drafting and trading him would be a good way to procure additional talent.

absolutely zero percent
chance he plays in Minnesota this year. the only way he plays in the NBA in 2009-10 is if he’s traded to another team.

I can't believe anyone believes the Wolves
They are wolves, and everything they have said in the last few days is laughable. The only reason for it is for the grapple onto their last string of leverage, which is them convincing people they will keep rubio and flynn. Do you really think rubio will go back to spain for a year or two, just to come back to minnesota anyway? Shit will still be cold up there, he’s not going to play there.
Wolves GM Kahn learned from D Walsh, this was his first draft he was in charge of, and he drafted his man, Flynn. props to that, but when it turned out rubio dropped to them they had to take him, but should have abandoned Flynn as his main guy and went with a strong non PG next pick. Instead he is in this situation where everyone knows that he has to trade Rubio, and unfortunately for the Knicks he is holding out until free agency starts, and taking the time to build back up his leverage.
Rubio will be great, thats not the issue to me. But I want the knicks to keep Nate he is our energy, and the wolves seem to be holding out for as much as they can get, which won’t be until next week.
If you saw Kahns interview the the draft he looked like he just swallowed miss red riding hood

oh yeah
They took Rubio first so that they owe Flynn less money who they are keeping, why would they care about helping rubio with a buyout when he does want to go near minnesota? He wasnt even at the player introductions.
And as for Jordan Hill, he’ll develop into the next Renaldo Balkman not the next Amare, are you joking. We didnt seem to mind giving Balkman away, Jordan Hill is the same type of rugged unpolished player, except with more aloof big man traits.

i agree with your jordan hill assessment
but like gallinari…. i’m happy to wait and see. at least we have three mobile big men now. last year we had one. and now our only big man from last year is smaller than the two new ones. i can dig it. we just goptta keep them dudes.
