Draft Hangover Thread

I started posting my draft analysis write-up, but just realized that I'm already running late for work and am not yet dressed. So, for now, I'll open things up to you guys. Everyone (I would hope) has had a night to sleep on the Knicks' acquisitions of Jordan Hill, Toney Douglas, and Darko Milicic. Here are my questions for y'allz:

1. What do you think of the team as currently composed?

2. With free agency beginning next week, what moves would you like to see, if any? Do the frontcourt pick-ups make David Lee expendable? Should Walsh chase Rubio, and at what cost? Lee? Nate? Chandler?

3. How can Hill and Douglas make an impact as Knicks? What do they bring to the table? (That's half me soliciting your opinion and half me just knowing nothing about college basketball. Enlighten me.)

4. How would you rate last night's moves on a scale from 11 to 17, with 11 being the highest?

I'd love to hear your answers to those questions and anything else on your minds about last night. Like Barnesgasm said, the go-to reaction at P&T on draft night is unadulterated fury, followed quickly by understanding and appreciation. That's how we treated Danilo Gallinari, and that's pretty much the way I react to everything. Seriously. Ask my mom about the time she bought me rollerblades.

Anyway, I've come to terms with the draft, but still anticipate some serious shuffling in the coming weeks. I'll go into detail when my services aren't need at a pool supply store. Jah bless.

Junior

Have you heard anything about the Knicks bringing in Ewing, Jr. this season now that his MCL has healed?

May be biased, but I think he’d be perfect in D’Antoni’s system.

Casually.

i was ready to lambaste hill with my unadulterated fury, but i decided to be in a foul mood instead. i can’t stand the fact that we let jennings go. he would have had the rowdiest induction directly into knick lore if we took him, showing up late. do you really understand what that would have done for this kid’s career? and also to our collective psyche? he was the one, luckily him and skiles will get arrested for bankrolling a human dogfighting ring between themselves.

to me this draft came down to jennings and rubio. and we had a chance to get one of them and we balked, man.

that said. jordan hill and darko does not give us the leverage to let david lee walk, run, leave, get traded, etc. lee might not be worth 10 mil a year. but he is definitely worth keeping on the team. let us pray that no one makes an over the top offer.

furthermore… i still don’t see nate as expendable. ghostface dunkless. and that’s the whole story there if you ask me. i need my guys on my squad. win or lose, i want my team. i’ll take lebron of course.

as for rubio. walsh should not chase him. but he should have someone follow him and see where he goes. stay a few cars behind. jennings will be available to the lowest bidder in december. the bucks are too stupid.

what else? oh yea.. my trade proposal

larry hughes, jared jeffries, eddy curry and jordan hill
for
steve nash, amar’e stoudemire, leandro barbosa

i think it matches.

your trade proposal is ridiculous. Suns give up an MVP, All Star, and great 6th man for 3 injury prone journeymen and an unproven poor man’s chris bosh. Nice

by Goatface on Jun 26, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thats right

when you think about it. the only guy that might think jeffries has value is steve kerr.

therefore it’s a no-brainer.

the knicks have to go after rubio

it really looks like he isnt hot on minnesota. on truehoop today they quoted his dad saying that its likely ricky will stay in europe for another year or two—i doubt he would if he were going to another team in a better city without competition for the point

david kahn pretended to have some sort of grand plan in drafting both flynn and rubio, but i really think the knicks should go after this guy. especially if they can package nate and hill, they’d have a nice trio of lee, rubio, and gallo assuming his back is better. i like their odds for the 8 seed if they can get this done

If they had anything remotely like value to offer, then they *could* chase Rubio

The Knicks don’t have the assets to offer for Rubio. David Lee’s redundant to the Wolves’ two PFs in Love and Jefferson; Wilson Chandler is a player you toss in to move up a few picks but not for a decent pick outright; and Nate Robinson is nowhere near Rubio’s tier of talent. This is not a package of talent the Wolves would even consider. That a Knicks blog is asking the question “Would it be worth it?” is laughable evidence of the usual Big Apple solipsism and sense of entitlement. Toss in the fact that Minnesota would not want to give up valuable expirings to do it, and New York is (again with the solipsism) assuming any deals will clear cap space for next offseason….

If the Knicks could dream of trading for Rubio now, they’d have been in position to offer Washington something better than two replacement-level wing men for the #5 pick. You know?

solipsism

that has to be the biggest word ever used in P&T history.

on another note

i’m sorta sad to see quentin leave. he always wanted to win, and he worked hard and he didn’t complain. and he yelled at people. i respect that.

Last night, I really felt like the draft wasn’t great. I thought D Walsh did ok – but not great. Sure Hill looks like a nice addition (I’ll get to that in a second) but I thought that because Walsh didn’t get Curry/Rubio it wasn’t a great draft.

On to the actual pick: Although Hill was the obvious (though unimaginative) pick at #8, I actually don’t mind it. Before the draft someone, I can’t remember who, said something like, “If NYK comes away with J Hill, they will be very, very happy” – so it sounds like they got their man….sort of. Re: Hill, I think he’s less Channing Frye and more Amare Stoudamire. My good buddy, who is a degenerate gambler of Pac-10 hoops, texted me the following:

He’s a total beat, you and the Knicks fans will love him. A way more athletic Hakim Warrick in terms of D and blocks with a rapidly developing Offense. Great pick for the Knicks

Now, that seems effusive, but I’ll take it. If he has a motor, can get up and down the floor, block some shots, hit the open jumper, spread the floor, etc. I will love it. Actually, and maybe I’m talking myself into this, but I could see him being a great addition for speedball.

Now: on to RR. As I see it, the Knicks have to – HAVE TO – go after Rubio. It’s totally irresponsible for them NOT TO. He’s dangling out there for anyone to take.

I keep reading about Hill

and Im glad the Knicks got him.

Honestly the main Idea I get from him is that he’s a much more athletic David Lee, plus an actually developing jumper, + the guy has more than a clue on how to play D.

I mean this probably sounds nuts, but Hill actually seems like the better pro-prospect than that other PF taken in this draft, mainly because Hill is good at other things other than the alley-oop.

Ghostface Douglas hopefully develops at least into a Charlie Ward type, tho I see him more as a scorer so maybe he;s a Jason Terry type?

I am 100% glad the Knicks didn’t try to trade up for Curry, I think he’s a bust in the making.

I think the idea they might trade for Rubio is good, I still like Rubio even for all his problems.

Id rather the Knicks wait on that and hold onto Jordan Hill tho. Maybe they give up Lee for him? Id have no problem if the Wolves would take Lee.

Toney D's role

The ESPN radio guys (had to listen to the draft on radio last night, got the stud team of Gottlieb/Lavin/Will Perdue – jesus F*ing christ those guys are TERRIBLE) – but they made a decent point on Toney Douglas. They said that he was sort of a Bobby Jackson/Jason Terry type: a combo guard that could come off the bench and score in buckets and provide instant energy (kind of like Nate Robinson but less of a sideshow – sorry for all of the n8-circus supporters out there)

by Cody K on Jun 26, 2009 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Curry will be solid player. I’m glad the warriors didn’t take hill because the only reason he’s the second best PF is because his only competition was Blake Griffin.

Don't trade Stephen Curry Movement

by Sinigang on Jun 26, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

sorry

Curry doesn’t play defense at all. He may fit right into wha the Warriors and the Knicks RIGHT NOW do, but I have a hard time thinking a guy that scores 20 and lets up 20 actually makes a difference on a team.

I’d rather have a Toney Douglass that might score 12 but let up 4.

And can anyone honestly say that if a guy like Toney Douglas was playing at Davidson that he wouldn’t score 20 – 30 points a game?

I agree on Hill, but you look at players liek Jason Thompson and Javelle McGee and that they had some decent success.

Hill is a little shorter than them, I guess, but I’ll take a player that stands out at Arizona any day. I know Channing Frye is the first one people think of, but Hill is not that type.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 26, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats

what ive been saying since may. Knicks got a top 5 guy at 8, increased their depth at a position where they had none, made lee expendable (the dude with the highest trade value on the team as much as i hate to think of him on another squad…. ), and are no longer a sieve on defense in the paint. And another note on Jennings, what’s his upside? Poor man’s allen iverson? what if he just turns out to be Sebastian Telfair? I dunno maybe im a homer, but hill is fantastic and plays hard. Plus, every player loves to play for d’antoni. Thats gotta be a plus

Draft / Rubio

First on the Rubio front. I don’t think we have to go after Rubio because i don’t think Minnesota is going to trade him. He is probably a year or two away from coming to the NBA so why would Minnesota trade him. They play Johnny Flynn until Rubio is going to come to the NBA then re-evaluate next year.

On the Knicks draft picks. I like the HIll pick because he was the best available and fits the Knicks system very well. Also I like the Toney Douglas pick as well because he was also the best available.

by hoopsman81 on Jun 26, 2009 1:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Rubio may be a year or two away from coming

and that’s why i thought Minnesota was smart to Draft him. there is always going to be intrigue around Rubio, and his stock can only go up. the T’Wolves weren’t going to do anything next season, even if they had drafted Curry or someone else that was going to play right away. by using a pick on Rubio, they can essentially dangle him as trade bait until an NBA GM finally decides to overpay for him.

Exactly -- where's the urgency?

The time pressure in Rubio’s situation is mostly on his current team. They’re in financial trouble. If he stays there, the team loses that (ridiculous, exorbitant) buyout lump of Euros.

Anyone thinking the Timberwolves are under pressure to deal Rubio for a dime on the dollar for the likes of Nate Robinson is living a delusion.

draft

While it was disappointing that Don Nelson stuck it in the nyk craw by taking Curry when GS so obviously needs a big, Hill was the right pick given the way it played out. Hill was a dub dub monster for UoA this year and should excel in MD’s system. Landing him will make the LeeLovers more easily forget DL when he’s gone via sign n trade next week.
As a tarheel alum/ACC fan I was a bit disappointed that Ellington was taken at 28 – but Douglas is a player and ballhawk who will surprise the Garden faithful.
It was a solid, if not spectacular, haul for the Knicks — and getting Darko for Q is gravy as they get a taller longer guy who just might emerge under Dantoni.

Given the lack of a first rounder next year, I think DW did about as well as could be expected – too hard to move up without a pick to trade (thx isiah)

whether there are any other moves on the horizon – as a longtime knicks fan (sufferer) – im pretty pleased with the DW/dantoni operation – at least there is a semblance of a plan and they are adding fresh (lacking micro fracture surgery) legs to the mix while getting the cap under control.

after having bailed on the team and not watching pretty much since the 100 mill deal given to houston, this is certainly a nice change – wins and losses aside – they are watchable and offer a glimmer of hope for future success

douglas

i like the tony douglas pick, i though it was going to be him or mcclinton, but douglas works just as well. after seeing him play against my college throughout the year i have to admit he’s a potential star. you don’t average 21ppg in the ACC without being a good player, i expect him the take the reins from duhon towards the latter portion of the season

by Anonynous on Jun 26, 2009 1:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dan Wetzel put it best

he said that the Knicks were probably disappointed to not be able to get Curry, but at the same time by drafting HIll and Douglas, they have two guys that fit into D’Antoni’s system. he went on to say that at least under Walsh, they now actually have a rebuilding plan – something they didn’t have under Layden and Isiah.

i like the pick. Hill is the replacement for Lee next season after the Knicks sign-and-trade or let him walk away. there were a couple of guys like Derrick Brown and Sam Young that i wanted at #29, but everyone seems to be raving about Douglas, so i guess i’ll just fall in line.

it could’ve been worse – could’ve had like Austin Daye (B-U-S-T) and that dude from the Congo with the two picks.

i think rubio will be here

It just doesnt make sense for them to keep him. Even if they feel he could go to Europe for 2 years then come back… why pick flynn… who plays the same position?

I think they valued Chandler higher then hill… and saw picking rubio as a way to get some cap relief and a better young player from the knicks. I also bet it works, and we trade for him before the season starts.

I give this draft a 13… I think hill was a good pick, and I LOVE the Q for Darko trade.

You are kidding yourself badly

The Wolves aren’t going to trade a franchise-level PG for an okay, well-rounded young wing — even if Wilson Chandler proves he is that.

If you look around the league, you’ll be able to find sixty-five potential tradeable commodities that would fit Minnesota’s needs better, without trying very hard. You will also have it dawn on you, in the process, that Hill was the last player New York would have taken as a potential chip to send Minny’s way.

Honestly, sometimes New York sports fans seem to forget that the rest of the world exists.

by feral on Jun 28, 2009 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if Minnesota could work out a deal

where they received say Hill and Chandler for Rubio and were able to pawn off a bad contract (Brian Cardinal?), i don’t see why that would be a one-sided trade. the Knicks may be hesitant to take on contracts past next summer, but if they’re as crazy about Rubio as they seem to be, then i figure the would pull the trigger on that.

i know Hill isn’t an ideal fit with Love/Jefferson on the roster, and Chandler isn’t exactly a franchise player, but Minnesota would getting two young pieces and cap relief in exchange for a kid that won’t ever wear a T’Wolves jersey.

they should trade rubio to the knicks

i think minnesota will take lee because he would help minnesota get better in a hurry, he would be there veteran presence along with jefferson, i think kahn is thinking of a grand scheme, he’ll probably take our first rounder in 2011 and/ or a protected first rounder in 2012 and/or lee and maybe duhon and release telfair, because flynn is a lock to become their starter, he fits in perfect with their offense
