Why cant we just keep Nate and forget about Rubio?

Its that time of year again and i smell a bad trade coming. First of all Im not buying into the Rubio spectacle. Im just not a fan. I understand allot of you are for one reason or the other however Id just like to share my unpopular opinion. My question is.....why can't we just keep Nate at pg/sg and forget all this Rubio mess? Ok Nate is a bit on the short side and a headache sometimes but so what? Nate's better than alot of guards that are taller than him. He's tough (ask Chris Paul) he's athletic (ask Yao Ming) although his apg was 4.1 he's shown he can dish on occasion and his TO average is way lower than Duhons. What does this kid Rubio have? Flashy passes that will probably lead to more TO's and nobody is sure how this alleged "Court vision" will translate into the NBA. Plus my man Nate can fill it up. Last year after the Allstar game does anybody remember how Nate was averaging 30 a game for a while? Do you honestly think Rubio could top that? Ok lets say Rubio has a good year what is he going to do on the defensive end? The Knicks where the 4th best offensive team in the league last year. We dont need anymore more offense than we have already. What the Knicks need is more defense preferably in the blocks column . If you watched every Knick game last year ask yourself how many more games would we have won if we had a defensive presence in the middle? I say quit all this Rubio talk and lets keep my man Nate in the backcourt.

i agree

quit the rubio talk and focus on nate. but i would like to point out that rubio is a killer in the passing lanes. he has great anticipation to offset his lack of nate-ly athleticism.

but, yes, lets do our best to keep nate. i’d give him a five year deal. but thats just me.

just out of curiosity

I know there is alot of hype and what not, but…you really think all the independent, non affiliated scouts like the guys on draftexpress are that wrong?

First of all, he’s already better at defense than nate will ever be. at age 18. Bold statement? yeah. but check it—nate is short thus is only good in one facet of defense…using his quickness toget steals. Rubio led the spanish league in steals. At 18. in 2 years, he will be beyond nate at that…not to mention he’s 6 3, so the potential for more is there.

And if u wanna see how “flashy” passing of spanish PGs translates, go look at jose calderon’s stats from the p ast couple years and peep how he constantly led the league in assist to turnover ration, by landslides…

I still think we should keep nate, but if you think he is the starting combo guard answer for us, yall are crazy. Nate is an exceptional 6th man. EXCEPTIONAL. Thats it though…

Sometimes i dont think people realize…RUBIO IS EIGHTEEN! How good were ANY OF THESE college PGs, nate, ty lawson, jennings, rose, evans, when they were his age?!

Can’t be short sighted out here in the world of armchair GM-ing…

Good points

Im just saying i dont want give up too much to get this kid which i think we will end up doing. GM’s, Scouts & Coaches for the most part tend to try to fall in line with each other. Sometimes they could be right about a player or be totally wrong i.e. Darko. From what ive seen of the kid i dont think its superstar NBA material like everyone makes it out to be. To me his greatest asset is that he’s young and 6’5. Maybe im wrong, but even if he is how much better is he really gonna make the Knicks when our problem is defense? Is he really worth more than Lee and Robinson before even playing a minute in the league?

What the Knicks are thinking

On espn news I heard that the Knicks offered WSilson Chandler strait up for Rubio and that got shot down.

Also I think that Nate is a good player but I can’t see him as a player you can Build around but while rubio is more potential than NBA ready production he is the type of player you can rebuild around.
Nate can be a great player who helps out a great team a lot but i think that teaming Rubio Hill and Gallinari gives the Knicks a young core with plenty of potential and takes a lot of pressure off of Walsh to reel in LeBron or Wade in 2010

Doesn't matter how many ppg N8 can get

Remember Kobe was scoring huge numbers every night after Shaq left LA, but the Lakers didn’t start winning until he learned to defer to his teammates and become a facilitator.
Nate can be unstoppable on some nights, but he still lacks the most important quality in a point guard. HE DOESN’T MAKE THE OTHER GUYS ON THE FLOOR BETTER! That’s why he’ll never be more than a spark plug off the bench. He simply is not a leader. I’m not totally convinced that Rubio is the answer either, but I know that Nate’s not even close.

correction

Kobe’s teams weren’t any good until he got all-star teammates. He’s still a ball hog with very questionable shot selection.

potential to suck.

Nate doesnt have to be the centerpiece that you build around. I dont think NY sees him like that anyways. But hes a wingman. He has plenty of skills, can score in bunches, and he brings a ton of energy with him. He DOES make other guys on the floor better too. He always gonna be someone who gets slept on too. Hes NOT a PG, and the Knicks havent tried to make him one. Rubio and Nate CAN play on the court together because Rubio IS a PG. Rubio isnt going to compete with Nate for PT. Nate may stay in a 6th role, but Rubio should be compared to Duhon.

Furthermore… this talk of a centerpiece for rebuilding in Jordan Hill, Gallinari, and Rubio scares me. Rubio…sure, hs worth taking a chance with. Hill and Gallo…man, I don’t know. Both of them are twigs and look how brittle Gallinari was last year?!!? A back injury in your rookie year… I’m no Dr. but back injuries dont just ‘get fixed’ or ‘go away’. Hill hasnt even played a game yet, and he playd well at ‘Zona, but no way is he ready to step right in and make Knicks fans forget about Chandler and Lee. This was a thin thin draft…so hold off on annointing this guy as part of a core of anything.
Potential doesn’t mean a damn thing. Potential means Channing Frye, Jared Jefferies & Eddy Curry. Potential is what Kwame Brown had. And Darko Milicic. And Mikael Olowakandi. And Stromile Swift. And Fredric Weis.

While on the core though…NYs current “CORE” is Chandler, Robinson, Lee (for now) and maybe Gallo… and all of those guys are like 25 yrs old. they aren’t old by any means. This isnt the NCAA where the top recruiting class can be a Top 5 team that year. Teams don’t rebuild with only guys under 21. Also, LeBron isnt coming to a team thats not ready to win. He just spent these last few years in Cleveland rebuilding. He wants to step in a win immediately. Hill and Gallo are projects to grow with. The REAL pieces are Lee, Chandler and Nate. Or at least Chandler and Nate. Doesn’t sound like NY will offer Lee much.
I like Rubio, but I hope we don’t give up everyone to get him. At least not until LeBron’s name is in ink… along with Amare.

They gotta let Nate go

Sure, he’s athletic and at time he can score at will, but Nate is not a distributor, something the Knicks need especially in this system. He WILL get overpaid. I love him, but he’s really better as what he was last season, a change of pace guy off the bench, a solid 6th or 7th man. The Knicks have made it clear they’re gearing up for 2010, they can’t risk it by overpaying for a 5’9" shoot-first point.

Am I just wasting my time?

why not?

You see what guys like Jason Terry can do for a team? I hate Dallass, but aside from Dirk JT is the one that makes that team go.

Nate is that type of player and you cannot underestimate the value of a 6th man that can give the team energy like Nate.

5-6 Mill for Nate is not all that much. If Walsh can convice Nate to backload the contract (so he ""only"" makes like $3 Mill in 2010), would be nice.

why h8 on n8???

The Knicks should count their blessings and be happy with n8. He needs to start, we should look or trade for a backup and export Duhon back to whatever blue devil hell he came from.

Srry Du nuthin personal.

N8 is also WILLING to sign the one yr qualifying that was offered and really how often does that happen with a player of his talent?(despite speculated selfish motivations)

I’ll tell you another thing…If we are willing to offer JFK….Jason Fcking Kidd a multi year contract and go over budget, why not keep Lee also and nix the Kidd talk all together?

Unless we are saving a significant amnt of money in the long run, keep em both.
