Thinking of team building
So we all know the Knicks are trying to win, but heavily stockpile space for this slightly mediocre off-season. However, Walsh has said he isn't necessarily just going to wait for the offseason to make moves. I read this morning that it seems David Kahn (Minnesota GM) may be looking to undo everything Kevin McHale has done and that Minnesota might look to move Al Jefferson as he apparently clashes with Kevin Love as well. As much as we are trying to NOT add anything to our salary cap, might it be worth pursuing a guy like Jefferson? My inclination is the Knicks wouldn't trade for him, but I think it merits serious consideration. Heres a few notes on him after the jump.
First off, he is signed through 2012-13, and makes $12M this season, $13M next, $14M, then $15M in 2012-13. I know. Pricey.
-He's a 6-10 Big though, 25 yrs old, but is returning from a torn ACL last season.
-For the last 2 seasons, he's been a 20-10 guy (21.0ppg/11.1reb/1.4blk in '07-'08, 23.1ppg/11.0reb/1.7blk in '08-'09)
- His numbers are slightly down this season (17.7ppg/9.1reb/1.0blk) likely due to Kevin Love's presence, and coming back from his knee inury.
-NBA.com has his Player Efficiency rating as +19.67
Bottom line is I would be skeptical about his knee, but he is a very good player and he's a good young big man. His price tag is a bit high, and getting him would likely cost us definitely Jordan Hill, an expiring contract, and a draft pick, and maybe another player, but having him and David Lee on our frontline would certainly strengthen our team and still leave enough $ for our guy. I obviously would hope we could convince Minnesota to take a guy like Jefferies too (helping us financially and giving them some good lockeroom spirits along with some defense). I haven't looked at how the money adds up, nor have I jumped on the "Trade machine", but I'd like to think this be seriously worth considering. Of course David Kahn is now saying that Jefferson has NOT been offered to any teams, but he has said that he isn't sure how well Love/Jefferson can coexist in the future. He is still evaluating them and its a bit early to judge that combo since Jefferson is coming off injury. Stein seems to think both players could benefit from having more athletic players helping them on the frontlines. Jefferson is a down-low post guy.
Anyone else think this may be a very sly move for the Knicks? I wouldn't give up Gallo, but I'd give up Hill. If we have to swap Chandler instead of Hill, I might consider that too.

Well
Taking on a contract like that would take them out of the running for a Max deal this year, unless they got Minnesota to take Curry. Or if we got them to take Jeffries, and pretty much gave up the idea of keeping Lee.
I like Jefferson – I imagine he’s struggling in the triangle right now. But he also might struggle in D’antoni’s system. I very much doubt the Knicks would go in this direction.
I don't se how it takes us out of a max contract...
We have nearly enough money to sign TWO max guys. Thats the point of getting rid of Jefferies OR Curry. It would allow us to get over that $$ hump. The question is would it be better for us to get Jefferson in a trade, or do our best to sign Ama’re Stoudemire or gulp Cowboy Chris?
I also doubt the Knicks go in this direction though. And I would still rather have Ama’re, if wecan pony up the $$.

It depends
on what the salary cap ends up being. But basically, if they had this contract, they might still be able to offer a max deal but they’d have to renounce Lee, giving up his bird rights and cap hold, to do it. Then they would have absolutely no money to re-sign Lee under any circumstance. Maybe Jefferson’s a better player than Lee, but it’s not looking that way right now.
Bottom line – if they traded for Jefferson, there’d be no way to keep him and Lee and sign a max guy July 1, unless they traded Curry for an expiring. If we’re going to spend upwards of 10 million for a frontcourt player, I’d rather they spend it on Lee.
hell no
hes been scoring 20 n 10 because hes been the focal point of the offense. the timberwolves have been horriblly undermanned and young since the celtic tade. this guy is a far cousin of eddy curry. stay away. didnt zach randolph get his 20 n 10 on an equally mediocre portland team? no. no. no. i might have done it if they took eddy curry but even that would only be acceptable if jeffersons contract was expiring in 2011
I think Jefferson is a much better talent than Curry...
super distant cousins maybe. And have you seen Zach Randolph this season? The Grizzlies are a solid team too. But seriously…Randolph has been an absolute beast!!

But again
Randolph sort of replicates Lee’s skillset, which is part of the reason he didn’t work as well here.
no no, I've no desire to bring back Randolph...
except maybe on a Fantasy team….

seems to me like a poor complement for lee.
I imagine he’d fit as badly with Lee as he does with Love. Al’s not exactly known for his defense, and I have trouble envisioning a suitable frontcourt partner for Lee who can’t help out and block a shot.
Thinking more
with the running that is ideal for this Knicks team, his knee becomes more of a question mark. He’s not so bad on D though and he does block some shots. Idunno, I just see a lot of teams sign aging centers rather than young ones. Jefferson is intriguing to me. but yeah, it does occur to me that he might have a similar chemistry issue with Lee as with Love.

It's not a horrible move...
but I still probably wouldn’t do it. He’s a good player, but he seems like a guy who needs the ball in his hands all the time to impact the game. I don’t think he would fit into our system very well.

Hmm
We traded away this same player last year, For a guy we never even considered playing.
nah....
I agree with mercy..its the same player they traded away, basically without the reputation that Z-BO had.
All-Jeff is no better then Z-Bo. For about the same price.
PASS.
How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?
