Just a random thought...

I know this may sound crazy but I had to air it out to the P&T community.  What if the Knicks picked up Arenas next year? Look, we all know he's done for this season, and I'm not saying it's a sure fit but it looks workable.  The guy can score and is a decent passer, but he does have to calm down with the theatrics, but I think Pringles will do what he do and just drop him on the bench if he acts up.  We all know Duhon is just not very good at consistently scoring, and if Arenas was on board, hey, he's just another threat to the D.  If the Wizards drop his huge contract, the Knicks could pick him up with whatever cash they have leftover for the 2010 buffet.  It could be like a Sprewell deal, maybe?  Just something to chew on.  Now go on and chew me out.  :-)

There is no doubt

That Arenas is and should be on Donnie Walsh’s radar. Quite frankly, the guy can flat out score on anyone. There was a stretch there in DC (I lived there and would watch him live) where he carried that team on his back. I think this could be a great pickup for the Knicks. He is a total wildcard in this whole 2010 thing. I see the Knicks being a serious possibility for Arenas. As long as we get him at that discount price, I say we’d be dumb not to do it.

No doubt actually...

if he’s available, should be an option.

When he’s healthy, he’s a good player. Shouldn’t be a primary option probably..but if he’s on a team with say….______ then, yea can’t pass that up.

As long as we’re not signing him to Allan Houston contracts tho…

You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going, because you might not get there

I'd like to think NY would go after him

but there are a few issues that would hinder us:

1) Unfairly, he would be lumped into that list of Marbury-like players that are headcases.

2) He still hasn’t made it through enough games for me to be 100% sure that his knee is healthy. He was playing very well until all this hoopla, so thats a good sign.

3) What would it cost to potentially sign him? Arenas has a monster contract, and if by some miracle Washington ends up voiding it, he would surely not take a huge paycut. $10M minimum per year I’d say.

I like Arenas, and I think he would be exciting in a Knicks uniform. He plays hard, he plays through injury, and he shows up every night. There is just very little chance that the Wizards would be able to void his contract. Even if they do try to, the Players Union would immediately step in and make it a huge mess. Nevermind that its Washington’s OWN fault since they signed him to it during his injury time. Of course it would come back to bite them!! I don’t think NY would be willing to take on such a risky contract either.

He's not like Marbury in that he's a headcase

but he is a high usage, low efficiency guy who has never been on a contending team and now is liable to lose a step (I think he already has) because of bad knees. Since his heyday in 05-06 when he was a top player, his counting stats and efficiency stats have gone south, often precipitously so. He has looked slow, out of the flow, and lost when he came back. That his team has talent and still sucks in a weak conference brings even more red flags.

Call me old fashioned, but I want a pass-first PG and a SG who can catch-and-shoot and get to the tin with equal facility. Gil is neither of those, so I say let other teams vie for him. Even when the Wizards were decent, it was only because the East was absolutely terrible. Unless he wants a midlevel exception, I’m staying away.

I'd love a pass first PG

but I actually buy into Gilbert’s type of game. He can be a floor leader and he will get in guy’s face if he thinks they are slackin. Yeah, I might agree he has slowed down since his surgery, but I feel like he is a guy who can fit into a system and play his part. He can be that high-scoring G, but he can also dish the heavy assists. And he is one of those guys who will drive the lane and force defenses to collapse around him.

Of course he’s overpaid. Of course he comes with baggage. But, if there is a chance to get him at a reasonable cost, I’d be all for it.

At the least, lets hire him as Head of Player Security….

My thoughts exactly!

The fact of the matter is that Duhon is a pass first PG, which is ok, because really, that’s all he can do right now. But Arenas could be what Nash is for the Suns. He has that shooting touch and would keep the defense on their toes because he CAN slash to the basket or pull up for a shot OR pass. It’s what they need to get some nice easy looks for everyone. Provided of course, he follows D’antoni’s system. Speaking of which, I don’t recall of Gilbert was a good defender, anyone know if he was? I mean if anything, have him to help out Tony D. Tony D could run point and Arenas could be the SG?

by Ceej on Jan 28, 2010 5:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think a Nash comparison is getting pretty far off base.

I will agree with CCF that Gil is one of the rare talents who actually has shown the ability to be an effective combo guard. When he was healthy from 05-07 he was just downright sick. He played with a chip on his shoulder and was just unconscious from 3. He was a beast, plain and simple.

The problem now is that, IMHO, he’s gotten worse and his versatility has gone from being a strength to being a liability. You could chalk it up to injuries or shitty teammates, but, when he came back for those 20 games or so, he was picking whether to be pass-first Gil or attacking Gil on different nights, while often being ineffective at both. Versatility is only worthwhile when coupled with efficiency.

Also, saying that you would want a guy if you could get him for cheap is just ignoring reality. He still has a rep as a top 20 player in the league. He won’t be cheap and therefore isn’t really worth the investment.

I see what Ceej means

I wouldn’t expect the assist numbers that Nash gets, but I do think Gilbert can play in a system if he knows what his role is supposed to be.

The prob in Washington felt like Washington moved on from Gilbert since he was gone so long, and when he returned, it just messed up the chemistry. He is a main player and is used to a lot of touches. It doesn’t seem to me that they had his role defined under Flip Saunders so Gilbert tried everything. He scored a lot because his teammates weren’t. He adjusted to a more passive style when they were losing. Injuries hit so he tried to pick up the scoring void. All the while he was shaking off 2 seasons of rust and understandable hesitation pushing his knees and playing heavy minutes.

I think when I say “cheap” i mean $10M/ year cheap. His contract now pays him a bit mroe than $16M/year. You’re right he is still a top talent, not so sure Id say top 20, but with the baggage he now comes with, his pricetag would definitely drop.

Again, all a longshot moneywise. I think it would be amazing if Washington tries and succeeds in voiding his contract. We will see what happens in March though.

not random at all

arenas could be a cheap, talented answer to the knicks’ point guard woes, and a great compliment to any other stars we might happen to pick up over the summer. we’ll see how the contract situation with washington works out.

I’d also say that arenas seems to have the NY state of mind, and could be a great fit in this system, but he’s got to keep the antics under control, and i’m sure D’antoni could handle that like you guys said.

I just dont think he would come cheap at all though....

But I will say if it would be a huge steal for NY

neither do i

we’ll see if a repentent, more focused gilbert emerges from this mess. IF washington even terminates his contract (which i think they have the right to do, but would still be a despicable cop-out move on the management’s part).

I still kind of think that Gil has the attitude to play in new york. He’s got to channel it into being competitive though, not hot-dogging. Donnie will definitely check out what he costs when/if he’s available.

If the price is right, yes

He would be beyond huge in this massive market.

Glad to see the comments!

Keep in mind, I’m saying I think this would be a great pickup for the Knicks IF the Wizards voided his ridiculous contract and IF he can stay healthy. And let’s be honest, why wouldn’t they try to? They would want to try and cut all ties to this guy and try and free up some cap space for 2010 as well. That’s a huge contract that they would love to drop and they could say he did void it by being an idiot and bringing weapons into the workplace. The Knicks need some scorers, and he can score, if anything he can try and redeem himself like Vick did with the Eagles this year. It would be a waste to see this guy just wither away with all his talent and he would definitely put on a show for the NY crowd. And I think he would LOVE to bask in the NY lights…

by Ceej on Jan 28, 2010 1:30 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

IF all that happened...

and IF the Knicks got one of the big name FA’s…I think you can count on something like this.

They went after Jason Kidd and Grant Hill for chrissakes….Walsh I think while of coruse he wants to improve the team, wants merely a known commodity. Gil is that.

You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going, because you might not get there

This occurred to me too

Something I read about Arenas’ meeting with Stern in which he mentioned the Wizards trying to void his contract made me think that maybe he wouldn’t mind so much if they did. That would be very strange, but Arenas is a quirky guy. If that contract does get voided, I sort of had a premonition that he’d end up on the Knicks next year. He would still be a risky signing if he was free of his contract via buyout or void, so he might come relatively cheap. It’s hard to imagine the Wizards being able to trade him – his contract is just too ridiculous.

by fuhry on Jan 28, 2010 1:41 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Just went to the trade machine

Curry and Jeffries for Arenas works. Interesting. If the Wizards really want to get rid of him but can’t go the ‘void’ route, trading him to the Knicks for Curry and Jeffries gets them nicely under the cap in 2011, doesn’t add to our payroll for 2010 and gets us a point guard for the next few years who quite possibly might be better than anyone else they might end up with.

by fuhry on Jan 28, 2010 1:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it doesn't seem like he can come back to the Wizards

I think too much internal damage has been done, with Washington totally throwing him under the bus and even the THREAT of voiding his contract on a technicality. It would be extremely awkward and difficult to go back into that lockerroom with no one willing to stand by your side.

Gilbert has made a ton of $. He could allow his contract to be voided, but 80 Million. Would you walk away from that without a huge fight? Would you leave it knowing you might not be able to get even half that in your next contract? Idunno man… they say they play for the love of the game, but…..

Gil's always been one of my favorite players

and aside from this whole mess, he still is and I would shit bricks if the Knicks got him. I don’t think LeBron would be too happy though, considering all that Cavs/Wiz beef from a few years ago.

I hate speculating lineups but

Arenas /Chandler/ Gallo/ HHMNBN/ Lee, with Toney, Jordan Hill, and some other guy off the bench?

fun to think about

but probably quite pricey. Although… since we are aiming for TWO big big FAs, would the MVPuppet and Arenas count? Shit, we still need a big man…. damnit.

I think that Arenas would come cheap (if he’s bought out) because he’ll have something to prove. Kind of like AI but more with ‘forget I had felony gun charges brought against me’ and less ’I’m old and can’t help teams anymore.’

Only if they void his contract!

Gilbert made me laugh when I herd of his Mexican standoff in the Bullets lockeroom.(I mean Wizards) He would be a better grab than Wade even with his knees problems. Complete with a three year deal with a team option for a fourth. I think he would complement Lebron, Bosh, or Amare better than Wade.
