Raymond Duhon

Raymond Felton is playing like Chris Duhon.  I know its just preseason, I'm not concerned until we have a  good look, but that doesn't mean we still don't need to be honest about what we see.  We made Felton a co-captain.  He has played some ok D, but nowhere near the D that DWTTD do.

My main concern is this: the pick and roll.  We have run numerous pick and rolls throughout preseason, but I'm pretty sure I have only seen ONE of those passes go from Felton to Stoudemire.  It was yesterday and Stoudemire missed a contested layup.  Felton always kicks it out off the pick and roll, going nowhere.  He;s more concerned with dribbling the ball right now than completing a pick and roll to Stoudemire.  Losing Duhon and Harrington was major addition by subtraction, I hope we didn't just bring one of them back...

Definitely needs to work out some kinks with the pick-and-roll

but Felton has already attacked the basket more in preseason than Chris Duhon did in his entire career as a Knick.

i agree with this.

stop complaining

if felton sucks so hard, you should be upset that we didn’t re-sign duhon, because he would have costed less. so just stop you booze hound!

I disagree with you vehemently! But, I'll try and respond professionally.

Simply the fact that Felton has gone hard to the rack several times makes him better than Duhon.

Duhon refused/could not get to the rim, and on the few occasions when the defense fell asleep and let him coast through the paint for a layup, he missed the layup. Duhon was just plain bad at basketball.

Felton has played badly during the preseason. It’s true. But when you watch Felton, his mistakes are not the mistakes of a guy with no skills. His mistakes are the mistakes of a guy who isn’t sure about the system he is playing in. And you know what? That’s allowed, because he just got here, and D’antoni’s system is one of the most fast-paced frantic systems out there.

I also have been disappointed by Felton, but he’s also shown flashes of brilliance. He’s had some great finishes at the room, some good defense, and some perfectly threaded passes. You don’t do those things by luck. He’s going to be okay, even if it takes the first month of the regular season to figure it out.

He’s not Chris Duhon because he’s good at basketball.

They will be for!

New System

It’s been said here a lot, but Ray’s in an entirely new system… and learning that system takes time, especially as a point. Look at what Collison is doing for Indiana so far this preseason… I think he has more TOs than Assists.

If anything, we should be ENCOURAGED by what we’ve seen out of Ray so far as he’ll only get better as he gets more and more comfortable.

good point

and to bring it back to duhon versus felton-

duhon’s presence actually hurt the team! felton in 4 meaningless pre-season games has not hurt the team, and has contributed to some of its success.

Last night

24 minutes, 8 assists, 1 turnover

Sounds like a real point guard to me.

so what you a UNC fan?

fine I dont care. But I’m saying look at how the team is when Felton is running things. Its shaky, he never throws the roll to Amare, and it just needs to get better so we’ll. fuck some numbers on a screen, 1 TO doesnt mean anything to me when you are shaky with the ball all the time.

you really think he's got the shakes???

i guess i’m too optimisitic.

by stingy d on Oct 18, 2010 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

some of his J's look terrible

but as of tomorrow night I’m gonna start to be optimistic again with Felton. But some of those crazy “great” finishes should have been passes too. yeah he quivers

by teksurgical on Oct 18, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Uh, no, I'm a Knicks fan

Who knows what it looks like when a PG moves the ball around well and doesn’t cough it up (not that I learned that by watching the Knicks but still). But there really is no comparison with Duhon, and there’s also no arguing with someone who just says “forget about his actual production, I seen ’im with my own two eyes and he sucks,” because that’s not actually an argument.

Moreover, if you think Felton = Duhon because Raymond’s PnR game is not looking crisp yet, I have to wonder if you even watched Chris Duhon either. Couldn’t shoot, couldn’t take it to the rack, couldn’t lead the break or stay in front of his man on defense… but he could pick and roll. Pretty well, actually, considering how much he sucked at everything else. When the defense knows you can’t shoot and can’t drive, being able to thread a nice pass through two defenders to David Lee several times per game is a minor miracle.

by flossy on Oct 18, 2010 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope you're right

its a good point with Collison, but he has never even had a full season running a team. Felton is a veteran and captain. The system is the system, but everyone has run pick and rolls their whole life

by teksurgical on Oct 18, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

teksurduhan

teksurgical is blogging like chris duhon!

I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.

by gbaked on Oct 18, 2010 2:57 PM EDT reply actions

You know who else got to the rim?

Shandon Anderson. But I’m not trying to make everyone throw up their lunch. I guess my point is you still got to make things happen when you get in the paint, other than bobble the ball or kick it back out. I’m not putting Felton on the level of those chumps just yet, but he does need to show us something. He had some nice connections to mozgov, and a few good finishes, but to me has looked shaky with the ball and a non-factor. no he’s definitley not as bad as duhon yet

by teksurgical on Oct 18, 2010 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

not for nothin

the whole team is not really that special. but should be much better than last year.

and you’re overreacting to meaningless games played by guys who are not yet in game shape and learning a new system.

Hows that?

sorry brah

it’s waaay too early to panic, sure we see some things that might bother us. I would love Felton to put up 15 and 10 during the preseason but it’s a looong season and we aint made a dent in the schedule yet.

When Duhon first came to town in his first few months he looked like he read the PG manual front to back and had it down cold enough to have Dantoni bench Clyde in his prime if it came to that.

but as we soon discovered fools gold is fools gold for a reason.

point is, everything aint always what it seems, and good or bad you need an adequate stretch of time to determine a players value/talent. Revisit 2 months from now and state your case.

Actually

If Duhon were here, probably every pass off the PnR would be going to STAT. Duhon was sort of the opposite of Raymond (so far).

All he’s gotta do is kill the turnovers like he did last night (8 assists, 1 turnover), and we’ll be good to go.

by ThisIsTraps on Oct 18, 2010 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

like lord smack said

you are buggin way too early. He’s had a few games to pefect the p&r and lead the offense to a lights out attack like most of us have envisioned. BUt truth is tho, everyone needs games under their belt to gel with the guys around him and know the system well. Unless you are the focal point who scores, dishes, and defends, your stats and play arent going to convert that easily team to team. its been what, 4 games? chill my man

youknow whats funny to me

with duhon you would always complain about how that shitcan refused to push the ball and keep the tempo up. but felton has been pushing every time he gets the opportunity.

if the pick and roll is the simplest play and everyone in the nba has been doing it since they were babies… it’s only a matter of time. i dunno…

listen teksurgehon

let’s take a look at some preseason stats and make purely objective conclusions:

Felton doesn’t look comfortable running the offense: he’s Chris Duhon.

The Magic, Celtics, and Grizzlies are 5-0 this preseason: they will go undefeated.

Kobe has shot 30% from the field, including 12% from 3pt land: he will only average 12 ppg this season.

Amare will lead the league in scoring this year (22.8 ppg). Nipping at his heels: The scoring machine that is Aaron Afflao (20.8 ppg).

John Wall has the most assists per game so far: he is the best distributor in the league.

Jarret Jack has shot 83% from downtown this year: he is the best shooter in the NBA.

Sample size…Preseason…Enough of this crap.

lid my ass

not literally but I want to say one thing. That means three things. (1) You guys took it to the level that Felton = Duhon, not me. I said “Raymond Felton is playing like Chris Duhon.” Which was more than true before last night.
(2) I think he read this post because last night he played like he used to play against us, and he didnt shake so much
(3) Be careful to heed your own words, alla you clowns. You couldnt make a full judgement before last nights game, you can’t make one now either after a good game.
I apologize for bringing up Duhon that name is poison. But I didnt say half the shit you animals said I said, and furthermore. Mr Smuckles…thats a lot of assuming right there…

So its the shaking

You dont like shaking. There. Boom. End of story. No shakers for this guy.

I didn't say that you said those other things.

I was pointing out the absurdity of drawing conclusions from a handful of meaningless games, instead of looking at a player’s overall body of work.

Most Definitely

by Ray Smuckles on Oct 21, 2010 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

uh
(1) You guys took it to the level that Felton = Duhon, not me.

You named your post “Raymond Duhon.” What were you implying? That they were secretly second cousins or something?

You couldnt make a full judgement before last nights game, you can’t make one now either after a good game.

Felton has been in the league for five seasons and has been better than Chris Duhon for every single one of them. Last night didn’t prove anything that wasn’t already obvious.
