The Knicks will cut Patrick Ewing Jr.
Final cuts must be made by tomorrow. Alan Hahn twat that the Knicks have already made their decision:
Hard to believe it but one of the best people you could meet, Patrick Ewing Jr., was cut yet again by the Knicks. Placed on waivers today.
The decision presumably came down to Ewing or forward Shawne Williams. Neither had been particularly impressive in preseason play, but you'd figure Ewing would hold clout in name alone. Not the case, I suppose.
Best of luck to Pat Jr. who, as Hahn mentioned, is a really splendid guy. Williams has had his share of issues, but he's feeling a turnaround with the Knicks. Hahn's piece on the last man standing is well worth a read.

It's the right move
All credit to PEJ for his play this preseason, but Williams was clearly the better player. Never, ever advocate nepotism; it will always have consequences.
When it comes down to the last roster spot
Does it really matter?
Especially for a Mike D'Antoni coached team, I'm not so sure it does.
Williams and PEJ essentially fought it out for a chance to be a good teammate, keep the pine warm, and to give highfives.

That's why I think it's the wrong decision.
Neither guy is going to play meaningful minutes, so you should pick the guy for stability in the locker room.
Ewing Jr was beloved by his teammates. We never saw Williams laughing and joking with the other guys and building camaraderie. Williams doesn’t exactly have the greatest reputation off the court either.
Why cut someone that was good friends with all the players, and keep a guy that good potentially be a locker room problem? Makes no sense.
They will be for!

What happens when a better player is let go in favor of a worse player?
The players stop believing that playing time decisions are meritocratic. That reduces trust in the coach – and it’s worse than taking any friend away. Even if everyone loved PEJ, that’s not a decision they hold against MDA, or Donnie, or Shawne Williams. It’s basketball, and it reminds them they’d better go 100% every night if they want to play, keep their roster spot, or get that next contract.
and actually that Twitvid on the Amtrak was of Williams joking around with Walker and someone else…

This.
plus the fact that Williams’ arrests don’t seem (at least to me) to be those of a terrible guy. First he got caught for possession of marijuana, then 3 years later got a 6 month charge for selling ‘codeine syrup’ to a friend in Memphis (you’ve never sold some extra stuff you had to a friend, if you smoke, drink, etc.?), again he got a traffic stop for driving on a suspended license and they found some weed on him a few months later.
This guy isn’t a woman-beater or anything like that, I think he’s just been unlucky with some of the things he’s done.
Donnie's bout to beat the NBA game like he got a cheat code
this rings true
but we’re talkin about a 15 & 16th spot. I know Uwing Jr. believes he isnt going to be a breakout star…or a key piece to any team. And its probably his life dream to don tha jersey of the same team his father was a legend for. At least log 1 sec on the same floor as him.. as meaningless as it sounds. But its best like u said to keep integridy of the oganization high. How you think Patrick CHewing feels right now? salty maybe?..I would be
"they try to do what he do, and been where he's been, but they get folded in two.....he's the dude"
Probably wants to dunk on someone
and will watch as his kid isn’t picked up by Orlando, either.
for anyone who’s read Phil Jackson’s book, the part where he talks about cutting Jannero Pargo sums up this situation perfectly. Everyone loved Pargo, and it was tough on everyone to let him go, but the players never felt animosity towards anyone – it’s part of the game.
The Knicks might be a little down, who knows, but every one of them knows that what had to be done was done.
I don't think anyone really knows what goes on in the locker room
Jr. seemed like a good dude, but Williams may be too. Reputation doesn’t really mean anything…Amar’e had a rep as an a-hole and I doubt he’s that.

Was he? Really?
I’m not saying he wasn’t, it just seemed like they were both non-factors, basically. Obviously we didn’t get much of a look at practices but… If the key to the Knicks’ season is the production they hope to get out of Shawneeee Williams, then… yikes.
Landry Fields is not liking this.
They were buds.

this is gonna sound bad
but why not cut both? do the knicks really need a 15th man?
I kinda agree
we could use a window wiper! did you see evans clean the glass last week? I wouldnt mind a tweener non scoring rebounder, those guys are out there
Try and get Kevin Love
Offer Kahn Roger Mason and a future 2014 first round pick.
I think we'd probably have to give up Felton
And Douglas. And Mason Jr. And Andy Rautins. Anyone who can play PG, Kahn wants
i sorta agree
but also havign 3 5-man squads for practice has to be a good thing for a team that wants to run their opponent out of the gym.

I'd definitely give up AR for him
Love to me is a lot like David LEe with his hustle on the boards. I think he’s a better defender tho, but that ain’t saying much.

I would actually agree with that but...
Where would Love play?
He’s a PF who can’t play SF, and shouldn’t play center. I wouldn’t trade Gallinari or Randolph for a backup PF. He also plays about as much defense as Lee did but is not as skilled offensively, although very similar.
+1
What we need is a C and a backup C who can board – altho i do think K Love is a better shooter that D Lee, in the sense that it’s taken D Lee 4 years to become as good a shooter as K Love was as a rook.
Still don’t understand why we never invited Earl to camp, and invited about a hundred wing players instead. Maybe Earl wanted to many years guaranteed.
Man is it depressing to read everyone’s pre-season predictions. SI has us finishing behind… Charlotte, Philly, and Washington!!! http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/ian_thomsen/10/21/scouts.picks.nba.season/index.html
Hollinger picked us to finish under .500.
Am I missing something? Am I being a typically irrationally optimistic homer? Are we really worse than Philly and Washington?

Earl wanted money that his skills didn't deserve.
Done and done. I’m sure he would have gotten an invite if the price was right, but he wanted more dollhairs than the Knicks (or any team) were willing to shell ou for him.

I'm really curious as to what that price was
Because we dished out like 3.5 mil to Mozzie who was pretty much just as unproven as Barron
Barron has proven to be a scrub
29 years old, stank it up for 3 years in Miami and put together a few good games for the Knicks at the tail end of a dismal season? Who cares? If he wants more than the vets minimum he’s insane. Roger Mason took almost nothing and he started 80 games for a 54 win Spurs team two years ago while Barron was shooting 40% in limited minutes for the Heat in his “best” season. Dude catches a 7 game hot streak and he wants real money? Let someone else give it to him… oh wait, nobody has.
Yeah, but Timmay's contract is only first-year guaranteed (I think)
So if it didn’t work out, the Front Office could be out of a bad decision after this season. Doesn’t appear to be the case, tho.

Amar'e could play center
He’d be fine if there was a guy like Love around who is a monster on the glass. Love is a little less offensively polished than Lee right now but a lot younger… and a lot better on defense, too. Love will be better than Lee when all is said and done IMO.
Can Shawne WIlliams Rebound
This post has a double meaning.
Honestly, I think that Williams must have looked better in practice, and they had to make the decision to cut Ewing. Injuries happen, and the guy may find himself with some PT. If it wins them one game, that game might be enough to get them into playoff land or a better seeding.
this was my initial thought
Can he rebound
