Randolph Continues To Be Dangled As Bait

Act_anthony_randolph_medium

Anthony Randolph has seen a piss poor amount of minutes and hasn't shown flashes of much during time on the court. He has the skills to be the team's best rebounder and best post defender but instead he gives us incredibly bad shot selection for one and all around bad basketball decisions as a whole. Before the season started it was rumored that there was a 1st round draft pick on the table for Randy which was thought to be from the Indiana Pacers. Back then most of us scoffed at the idea of giving away Randolph for a 1st round pick, I get the feeling that the consensus around here for this particular subject might have changed.

The Knicks have fielded calls from several Western Conference clubs regarding a deal for Randolph, according to a team source. The most compelling conversations have been with the Houston Rockets, who in one scenario would trade the Knicks the first-round pick they obtained in last year's Tracy McGrady deal.

via Frank Isola of the NY Daily News

The feeling is that the first round pick acquired would be most likely dealt to Denver for Carmelo Anthony in return which would mean the Knick aren't planning on waiting until Free Agency for the All-Star and would rather trade and secure him now. Knowing what you know, 1) He would likely be traded to the West and away from us in case he turns it on and 2) The pick would likely be dealt in a deal for Melo, would you make a trade?

I can't decide, but I trust Donnie.

Donnie has proved he will not be pressured into rash decisions.

The coaching staff gets to watch Randolph play every day, and I think they have an idea of whether or not this kid is going to reach his potential.

If they trade him, it means that he was never going to become that star we all hoped he would.

They will be for!

this he knows what we don't know do we have the facts? or anything at all aside from the games and interviews?

nope. which makes me happy to see this thing right now that donnie’s has not given in to what the fans want and more on to what makes the team work.

Victory goes to the courageous!!

by PTfromRP on Dec 11, 2010 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

That's basically how I feel.

If Randolph could come in and help the team he would. Instead Shawne Williams is getting minutes while he rides pine. Especially with the help we need at Center. If the coaching staff believed that Randolph could be of help they would play him and since they don’t give him mintes anymore that says a lot. Trading him says even more.

what i don't understand about this rumour

is that houston only has the right to swap picks. it looks quite likely at this point that they’ll have a higher pick than us anyway. and how can we trade that pick away again, if we get it back, when they have the 2012 pick? you can’t trade first round picks two years in a row, i thought? or have i completely misunderstood this?

by patrickm23 on Dec 11, 2010 2:07 PM EST reply actions

I figured we would be getting that 2012 in this hypothetical deal

and then re-trade it to Denver. The right to swap isn’t really a pick that we have given Denver…it is just a right to swap picks if they would like.

So yea, my assumption is this trade would be for the 2012 1st.

unload him...

it seems we’ve seen enough of our rotation players to think that with a few more tweaks, we’re at least knocking on the door of competing with the contenders.

randolph is not even a rotation guy, but he clearly has value. if we can turn…
- randolph
- walker
- mason
- buike
- even moz and TD

into solid, reliable backup PG and rugged 4/5… than our rotation is lengthened, deepened and we’ll be saving our stars some valuable minutes… which will definitely give us better than a fighting chance against the elite.

by bucketsncents on Dec 11, 2010 2:10 PM EST reply actions

exactly.

having 10 guys. 2 solid teams would be an awesome thing.

felton/BACKUP PG/buike/td/landry/gallo/will/amare/turiaf/BIG GUY

would be a nice rotation. that gives us randolph walker mason moz williams rautins curry to turn into something.

my initial reaction is "nope."

I wouldn’t be upset about it if it got us melo but I’d rather not. Screw denver and what they want. If melo wants to come here, then they get what they get. What they want, or feel they deserve has no bearing on anything. They can either take what’s offered or let him walk for nothing.

I’d like to spend a year on AR and coach him up. First on D, where he can contribute immediately. Then slowly integrate him into the offense. Hire him a special coach if u have to.

If they deem him a lost cause, then by all means get as much as you can for him.

by Crackback on Dec 11, 2010 2:15 PM EST via mobile reply actions

waiting may lower his value...

right now, the kid’s still a mystery, which means he’s still got pretty high value. obviously it would be a risk letting him go, but if it means bringing back a known commodity to go with our other “knowns” (amare, ray, will, landry, gallo and rony)… than it’d be foolish not to. especially now that we know that our core works real well together.

by bucketsncents on Dec 11, 2010 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

Why would we trade him for our pick back

when we’re on track to keep that pick anyway? Isn’t it the Rocket’s choice as to whether we trade or not? They’ll only do that if they have a better record than us, which they currently don’t. I don’t really think of the possibility of having to swap picks as much more than just motivation to have a better record than the Rockets.

Unless the deal would get us our pick and theirs…that would be nice.

I'd do it if it leads to a Melo deal

Isola seems to be talking out of his ass, though. Especially when he says the Knicks could “re-acquire their own 2011 pick” – even though as of now we are not giving up our own 2011 pick due to our record being better than Houston’s.

2011 pick

I think AR has not been given a chance. This keep players in his dog house shit has to stop. Nate was in the dog house and the first game out he dropped for 40 something. Stats don’t need to play all those minutes and AR can help out with that. And lets see if Stats can handle playing Center against the Celtics and the Heat this week. He has to give AR a chance this week.

by terellchewy on Dec 11, 2010 4:07 PM EST reply actions

If they're trading him to the Rockets

it would be for the 2012 pick the Knicks gave them. They didn’t trade their first rounder this year.

And I can’t stand this idea. Randolph might be doing nothing now, but Pringles will work him back in the rotation as the main guys continue to build chemistry and he knows what he has to do.

at first reaction I'd say yes

only because AR isn’t getting minutes here and berring injury(god forbid) I don’t see Dantoni changing things much to accommodate AR and his needs. Knowing this plus the fact that Donnie has already said he mentally revisits the mentioned McGrady deal, I feel the front office has probably considered this as well and would probably love to regain that draft pick.

But AR’s exact value comes into play now because one has to wonder why Houston is so willing to part with that pick after a successful trade rape. I think it has alot to do with the threat of the lockout.

Draft may not be as deep if college guys are scared away from the draft because of a potential lockout. You may see undergrads stay in school and 4 yr guys opt for overseas deals in order to get a secure paycheck. Houston has probably shrewdly thought this thru and determined that because of this threat the pick is now devalued. The question which i=now becomes relevant is how much devalued? Is that picks value now lower than that of Anthony Randolph or are the Rocket’s overvaluing Anthony Randolph because of their need for size???

The question wasn't

based on just the Houston draft pick. 1st rnd in this years draft is acceptable for a guy who has had opportunities to contribute but hasn’t for whatever reason. I’m inclined to get what we can while we can for this guy and agree with the idea of getting it done now while he has trade value. Knicks already have a rotting, almost impossible to trade, Curry on the bench, why put Randolph in the same circumstances. + D’antoni has a doghouse that seems to have a one way door… going in. Kinda like the roach motel.

The only answer is "depends on what Denver asks for"

if they prefer a first rounder to Randolph, then get the first rounder. If not, don’t.

Screw Denver, screw Houston and screw Melo

We don’t need him. We get more cost effective production out of the dynamic trio of Gallo, Chandler and Fields. Instead we should be looking for a quality big man like say Greg Oden who might be the piece that puts us over the top. imho

but thats the quality of big man we should be looking for and I think the price when we find one will preclude also getting Melo.

the Blazers and Rockets have a #1 overall pick on the roster that's always injured

if said #1 overall pick was healthy, along with the rest of the roster, they’d justify not getting another “star”, if that was available at any time to begin with….

Melo

Sorry but Galo, Fields, Wilson and a Big is not getting us to a Chip. Melo and a Big is getting us to a Chip. Galo is a good role player, thats it. If you don’t believe that ask him yourself.

I hope this trade goes through.

We desperately need the next Marcus Camby.

...and we could use the only Carmelo Anthony

if AR goes to Houston, I wish him well. Just don’t go thinking your GM is anywhere near as smart as he and Bill Simmons think he is. For some reason every move he makes is hailed as genius, but his track record has been very average. Very similar to Kevin Pritchard in that regard.

Don't hate on Morey.

The T-mac trade last year was a complete steal. We get a first rounder by giving up nothing. We trade Rafer Alston to get Kyle Lowry, one of the best back up PGs in the league. We trade Carl Landry to get the most efficient scorer in the league. We stole Luis Scola from San Antonio for NOTHING. Daryl Morey is one of the best GM’s in the business.

I seem to remember

letting Artest get away, signing Ariza, giving him up for nothing… and more than anything, having a really shitty team right now.

The T-Mac deal didn’t have a “winner” or “loser” in the traditional sense; it satisfied the needs of two teams with very different needs. It was a win for both sides, as it allowed us to get the players who have helped us to a 13-1 record in our last 14. So I’m kinda sick of hearing Houston fans saying Morey “robbed” us. Can’t we just call it mutually beneficial?

"I feel like this: You can't hate me." -Toney Douglas

by The Rooster on Dec 12, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

I'll agree with you on the T-mac trade,

but we did not get nothing for Ariza. We got Courtney Lee. He’s playing a hell of a lot better than Ariza did. We now have the ability to shut down big guards like Rose and Deron Williams. He’s shooting around 40% from downtown, and can create his own shot.

We did not let Artest get away, he wanted to join LA. Yao wasn’t going to play last season so Artest jumped ship; it wasn’t our fault.

It’s easy for you to say we have a shitty team when our two best players are injured. Plus, you guys play in the East, and haven’t had as tough of a schedule. For example, you guys have already played the Raptors two or three times.

We lost by 2 in LA on opening night, we beat LA by 10 just last week, and we should have definitely beat the Bulls in Chicago last week(Rose lucky 3 at buzzer to force OT). So we are by no means a shitty team.

Try playing without Amar’e and Gallinari for 10 games. That’s probably the equivalent of Brooks and Yao for us.

well

I still think AR has loads of talent and is very young, and I dont think he really has been given a chance to succeed yet. He is a player thats going to take time and when that light gets turned on he is going to be a great player.

But Melo is a superstar and if I can trade AR to use that pick to acquire Melo, then I am doing that trade, to be honest back in August I was totally against doing that. But the way this situation has turned out I think if i can get Melo via AR I am doing that trade, but thats a BIG “IF”. Regardless we should keep AR because of his emense talent and upside and sign Melo this offseason unless a deal for Melo was that 1st rd pick and Curry because no way in hell am I trading Wilson Chandler Landry Fields or Gallo, no f’n way. All of those players could be the f’n core of this team for the next 5 years.
