An Open Thread for Knicks-Heat Anticipation

G'afternoon, gobstoppers. I'm about to hop in the car and head south so I can be home in time for Knicks-Heat. In the meantime, here's a thread for y'all to discuss the upcoming game. How do the Knicks match up? Which Knicks have a chance to shine? Who on the Heat are you especially worried about? Is it Juwan Howard?

Comment away, and since the Space Jam theme song didn't get us a win last time, belt some R. while you comment.

I think the key here

would be Wil’s defense on Bosh.. Lebron and Wade will get theirs… as well as Ray and Amar’e, … considering the match-ups. But if Wil can shut down bosh, and denies his jumpers, i think we’ll have a good chance to walk away with the W.

Yo

I heard Bosh will be a game-time decision due to extra heavy flow.

Even if we play well,

I gotta say, I’ll be a little disappointed if we don’t take this game. I was hoping we’d either take down at least one of these teams.

Beat the Heat

Got to beat this team. Losing is unacceptable. Not with LeLiar coming into town. He never said he WAS coming to New York, but he certainly implied it over the better part of two years with statements like “If you guys want to go to sleep for 2 years and wake up on July 1, 2010 go ahead because it’s gonna be a big day.” Who does that? We need to beat this team and we need to beat them tonight. STAT should be too tough for skinny/weak Bosh to handle in the post, but obviously there are concerns with guarding LeBron and Wade. Maybe go to a zone and force Ilgauskas, Bosh, Arroyo, Chalmers and Jones to beat us. The big problem I see is that we are a team that likes to run and push the pace, and obviously LeBron and Wade are the best in the league at doing that.

Suns/Amare fan checking in.

Can’t wait to see the game tonight. The game Wednesday was spectacular. It reminded me of the instensity and excitement surrounding Phoenix basketball during stretches of the Nash/Amare run.

I haven’t gotten to watch Amare play that much this season (I was tempted to buy league pass, but with night school it’s just kind of tough) but I have been following his exploits. I picked him to win the scoring title before the season began, but to be quite honest, I still thought the Knicks would struggle to win more than about 43-45 games so I never really entertained the thought of him winning the MVP.

It appears the Knicks might have a chance to compete for home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs and the Knicks have a very solid starting five with Amare leading the way. I think the team may just be one player short of contending for a championship….

There has even been some mention in Phoenix (although not a popular opinion) that Nash may have held Amare back. I think that a system run by Nash promotes the path of least resistance. He tries to get everyone invloved. The difference for Amare this year is that he’s getting a few more attempts and opportunities. I think the Knicks got the exact same Amare the Suns had, he is just in a situation where he doesn’t have to share the spotlight and is proving that he can stand out on his own merits.

Amare was already great in Phoenix, it just took him going to New York for more people to realize it.

Good luck Amare. Good luck Knicks fans. I envy the enthusiasm and excitement your season is sure to bring. It has been long awaited. I will be happy when basketball in Phoenix returns to where your team is now, it is a very fun position to be in.

Never confuse activity with achievement.

by Jim Coughenour on Dec 17, 2010 2:26 PM EST reply actions

from what I'm seeing of Amar'e

he was more then capable (obviously) of getting the easy buckets that Nash got him. I don’t think people can dispute that.

The things that I see is that Amar’e doesn’t need Nash as much as Nash needed Amar’e.

Amar’e can score on his own. I think its funny that people think his jumper will stop falling like it is…when he’s not doing anything out of the ordinary for him. He just didn’t get to show it with Nash.

Why should Phoenix give the ball to Amar’e at the top of the key and let him score from teh triple threat, when they have Steve Nash to get him the rock?

Amar’e is getting more exposure in NY instead of Phoenix. And he’s also doing things he could always do, but doing them more often. I’m not even sure that he has to do all this, but he just can..so why not.

Maturity

I think it also has a lot to do with maturity. Here in NYC, he’s been the leader he’s never been asked to be in PHX because nash is already there. While I agree that amar’e may have had the same skill set while he was in PHX, I think something has changed in him. I remember him complaining about defending opposing Cs, and not giving support to MDA in front of the media. But now (atleast for the first 26 games) he’s accepted the role as C (and playing great D might I add).

by JVGsDietCoke on Dec 17, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

I don't have much to say, just thanks Jim. Suns were always one of the most fun teams to watch in the last few years.

Hopefully your franchise can turn it around while Nash is still there for you guys. Having met Nash and seeing the kind of class act that he is, nothing (aside from a Knicks chip!) would make me happier than to see him and your dedicated fans win a championship. Good luck to you as well.

In Donnie we trust.

I'm a Knicks fan tonight.

If there’s one thing that can bring fans all NBA teams (not from Miami) together, it’s the incredible hatred from King Dbag and the Miami Heat.

Go Knicks!

I think it's about time Anthony Randolph got his second chance

we need someone to help Amar’e and Turiaf down low…make it happen D’antoni. Shawne williams isn’t cutting it

by kglash2211 on Dec 17, 2010 2:59 PM EST reply actions

In a stretch of games where the need for wins is even fiercer than that easier stretch we had earlier, I don't know how much burn we can expect to see from AR.

For all the people clamoring to Free Anthony Randolph, for every minute he was actually in the game at the start of the season his WTF AR:OMG AR! ratio in the comments was pretty staggering.

I think I’m gonna keep trusting D’antoni on this one.

by GAx on Dec 17, 2010 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

yeah i know what you're saying

but we have a need, and I’m just saying that randolph can possibly fill that need. It’s been almost a month since AR has been on the court and you’ll never see his improvement if he doesn’t get a shot. You can’t just keep sending out williams and walker out there to just take up space and miss shots (i know williams started out strong but he hasn’t done much lately). D’antoni cut the rotation to practically 7 people on wednesday. This isn’t college, that’s not gonna cut it in the NBA.

by kglash2211 on Dec 17, 2010 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Word. I get frustrated too, seeing him on the bench sometimes or how Dantoni can shorten that bench with the quickness.

But I don’t know what came first, their lack of productivity leading to benching, or the lack of minutes leading to less production. Going off of Dantoni’s history, once you start not producing, and you’re not a star that’s proven himself, he loses trust and lessens your role in the system.

Playing time is the royal jelly for any developing player, but it all starts in practice. It’s like when we were clamoring for Darko last year when our interior D sucked. What could it hurt?, we asked. Could it actually be worse?? Yes. Apparently it could have because although we didn’t know it, Darko dogged it in practice with a shitty attitude. If I’m the coach and I have a player like that, no matter how much of a need we might have I wouldn’t install that kind of unstable, unreliable guy as a pillar in my gameplan.

I’m not saying AR’s doing anything remotely similar to that. By all accounts he’s actually handling this the 100% right way, and he gets a lot of respect from me for that. Just saying that for all the people Dantoni’s benched, he’s usually turned out right, and I hope that we can see AR in the future with a confident smile on the court and leaving holes in peoples’ heads from tomahawk jams.

by GAx on Dec 17, 2010 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

i too

would like to see AR get a lil burn. But this isnt the team we need extra post presence in. If anythying, this is a team where we go small like we’ve been doing.

You see some of those Boston guys coming in after Wednesday night with a pat on the head? Do they go over to the Laker site and do that, too? Honestly there were only really one or two bad ones, everyone else was cool, but it was interesting that even after all the close games in the last two years, this is when some trolls come out.

I think they hear us coming.

That many talk about as the turning point in the Celtics season that led to them steam rolling into the Championship. That one can only be called huge in hindsight though, no one gave it any thought before game time.

The hype surrounding this one has got to be at top-10 levels.

For the past week I've been literally thousands of miles away from the Garden

In a land with no MSG channel no internet connection capable of sustaining a live feed, and no ability to be up at 5:00 AM to follow along. Missing the Denver and Boston games has been, like, actually physically painful. I’m starting to get the shakes here, I need some Knicks real bad.

Mostly, I need to come home soon to a Knicks team that has just curb-stomped Pat Riley’s band of ball-less muthafuckin’ South Bitch scallywag chumps. Teach these clowns the meaning of respect. Step on their necks, Knicks!

OK, so this is big

Inpart, because ESPN Europe have got their arses together and are showing the game live (they had Mavs-Portland the other night) in glorious HD so I don’t have to rely on ILP.

I even tried to persuade my gf (the one who actually accidentally got me into the Knicks but barely has any interest in sports outside of the FIFA World Cup) to watch as it’s such a big game – ’it’s got LeBron & squeaky shoes’ – but she’s still hungover from last night’s office party. She seemed to think that recording it & watching in the morning would be a reasonable alternative to staying up until 2.30am to watch it live. Like I say, she’s not really into sports.

Kinda worried that any booing will motivate James, along with his usual MSG blow up. Kinda looking forward to the Knicks offensivizing them to death. We’re deeper than they are and Amar’e is a man who can lead as well as ball.

Game on…

This is an even bigger game than the Celts game

The Celtics are a great team playing very well right now, but let’s face it, they’re going to be retooling in a pretty major way in the next few years. The Heat, on the other hand, the Knicks are going to be battling LeBron, Bosh, and Wade for the next 5 years.

It’s kind of like the battle between the big stars and the lunch pail teamwork less glamourous guys. Just the way I want it, really. The question is, can team work and intangibles and Amare’s infectious swagger carry the day against LeBron and his taking his talents to south beach to party on stage with his friends Wade and Bosh as they cruise to their supposed multiple championships?

This will be the question that gets answered over the next few years and this is the opening salvo. It’s very similar to our past rivalry with the Bulls because of Jordan and all his hype. Can Starks the grocery checker shut Mr. Glamourous Dunker up? The Heat is more like the Bulls of old and the Bulls are more like the Heat of old – but regardless, we’re going to be slogging it out with these guys for the next few years… and it would be nice to start off with a win tonight.

Let’s get it on. I have faith in our guys. What a feeling!

I'm thinking that our swingmen will make or break us tonight

Whatever we get from Gallo, Fields, and Chandler will go a long way in determining the outcome. While we can’t expect them to slow down Wade and Lebron, if our 2’s and 3’s are cutting to the basket and hitting outside shots, the game could really open up for us tonight.
