Postgame Thread: Knicks 116, Raptors 99

Another day, another solid road win over a mediocre team. Amar'e Stoudemire and Shawne Williams (the E is for efficiency!) dominated the fourth quarter to stifle a Raptor comeback.

Recap later!

KNICKS WIN AGAIN!!!!

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

Still wondering how we'll hang with the .500+ teams in the 3rd Q

but I’m still purring at what we’re doing now.

We’ve turned both Raptors games into Ws from Ls last season and are now 5 games up on last season. Projecting 49 wins…

Great fun in the comments, we win in the afternoon, and life is pretty damn sweet.

The Monte Carlo simulation he runs is actually pretty good: Knicks rate a 75% probability of making playoffs and more importantly, 0.3% odds of being in the lottery.

Gallo contributes in so many ways even when he’s not scoring. He spaces the floor on offense, makes good passes, and gives good effort on defense. And ideally, he never loses confidence in his shot, so when he does get a good look, he makes the most of it

Let’s face it, Amare is really the first consistent “go to” guy the Knicks have had in about a decade. Marbury sure as hell wasn’t. Lee wasn’t. If there was anyone after Ewing …… maybe Houston or Latrelle?

How about Fields starts at the 2

Gallo at the 3, Chandler either starts or comes off teh bench at the 4, Williams comes off the bench as a 2. Walker gets nothing cuz Williams is taking his role (for now) and Azubuike is insurance.

Or basically exactly what they’re doing.

by heino vanderjuice on Dec 5, 2010 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

should they so happen to get Carmelo

when they have to re-up Gallo et. al, they’ll be able to go over the cap to do so since they own their rights.

Chandler’s probably the biggest decision they’ll have to make regarding whether to re-sign him.

He's a RFA

which makes it quite easy to either keep him or move him wherever we want.

Or, we tender him and delay the decision by a year

"I feel like this: You can't hate me." -Toney Douglas

by The Rooster on Dec 5, 2010 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

I think the deadline to tender him already passed

in the offseason they either sign him or some team poison pills him with a contract like Wes Matthews.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Dec 5, 2010 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

Nah, the extension deadline passed

Teams tender RFAs once they hit the market, like we did with Lee and Nate last year.

Matthews wasn’t poison pilled, he was just given more money than the Jazz wanted to pay. You can’t poison pill in the NBA since contracts are fully guaranteed anyways

"I feel like this: You can't hate me." -Toney Douglas

by The Rooster on Dec 5, 2010 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

Matthews was the definition of a poison pill

the NBA definition, not the NFL.

That’s true on Nate and Lee, but both did not have to sign those deals. They understood the situation the Knicks were in and that if they played well (like Lee), postponing another year could help them out more then what they’d get on the market that year (Lee was 4/40..he was correct. Nate wasn’t).

Plus, it was sort of doing them dirty.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Dec 5, 2010 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

Well that's the default situation for all RFAs

Their only other options were to 1) sign one-year tenders for less money or 2) hold out and get nothing in hopes of getting an extension (like Varejao did for a few months a couple years ago)

but Utah did have the option to re-sign Matthews using their MLE, and they chose not to. It was just another team paying him more than Utah wanted to pay him – so it was a poison pill in the same way that us signing Amare was a poison pill

that had the option to match the contract (not exceed)

but it was too much. Poison pill. Not like Amar’e who we did not have the ability to offer as much as Phoenix.

How is that a poison pill?

It’s standard procedure for RFAs.

“Poison pill” = inclusion of clauses that make a contract more lucrative to the original team than to the offering team, such as money becoming guaranteed if a player plays five home games in the state where his original team resides.

Matthews deal was just a standard contract offer.

The closest thing to an NBA poison pill

was the lack of Bird rights for second rounders who hadn’t accrued three years before hitting restricted free agency, like Arenas signing with the Wizards (Golden State could not match) but I believe that loophole has been closed.

and I think we’ll hold full Bird rights

You're using the term incorrectly

making it subjective (it’s a “poison pill” if the player “isn’t worth it”) which confuses the fuck out of people who use the term correctly.

Chandler would probably look at Matthews deal and command that

I think it was 5/38.

Who knows if that’s true, but he definitely could ask for that. Which probably means Wilson will be traded

looking for a low cost backup PG with an expiring contract

unfortunately the Times is generally behind them with regards to sports…damn near every team in the league would like that and rarely is there a team with a surplus of quality guards.

We’ll see tho. If Shawne Williams is legit in this role he’s in, I’d trade Walker for a backup PG any day of the week.

TJ Ford is a possibility

because the Pacers have Price, and Ford is expiring. Maybe they’d want to kick Bully’s tires

As long as whoever we get back stays an expiring contract.

by flossy on Dec 5, 2010 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

Ford's an expiring

but he makes enough money that Curry is our only usable trade chip.

The Walker/Mason combination doesn’t work (we’d take back too much money) and we’d have to package Safari and Buike or something in order to get Ford.

Curry/Walker for Ford/Foster (both expiring) works.

Mason's also completely useless.

Minnesota has far too many guards on their team. Then again, it is David Kahn.

Minnesota would probably just cut him – it’s strictly to make the numbers work.

but its more of Williams seizing the opportunity. At worst Williams can do what Walker do, so now they have a surplus of SF/SG that shoot the 3.

Not sure that this is a logjam

First of all, it’s a bit of a stretch to say that guys like Randolph and Azubuike play the same position. Second of all, it’s only a logjam if all of those guys command minutes. Randolph, Williams, and Walker really don’t. They’re nice to have around, but they can sit on the bench and fill in when we have injuries. I suspect that when everyone is healthy, you see an 8 man rotation pretty much like today’s, but with Turiaf taking Mozgov’s minutes (+ a few extra) and Azubuike taking Williams’. So it’d be something more or less like this:

Felton – 38 mins
Fields – 36
Gallo – 36
Amare – 38
Turiaf – 18

Chandler – 36
Azubuike – 18
Douglas – 20

Walker and Williams can fill in when necessary (for injuries, and for Fields here and there so his minutes don’t get so high that he hits the rookie wall), and Randolph can continue trying to learn how to control himself in garbage time and in practice.

I’m perfectly OK with Douglas as the backup 1, so if we trade an extra swingman, I’d rather get a more legit backup 4, so Chandler/Gallo can potentially play 4 less and 2/3 more.

"I think Murdertron makes a good point though."

by Joamiq on Dec 5, 2010 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

If he looked good

I’d give him a few of douglas’ minutes. He could also steal minutes from Chandler at the two as well…of course this is provided he’s healthy and looks good

Azubuike

Im not sure were being realistic about how much he can contribute this year. His injury and rehab has taken more than a year, usually its the season after the return that a player gets back his skills. It would be a miracle if he could beat out the guys ahead of him, Healthy he can ball.
