Why does Mitch Lawrence Cover Basketball?
"The Knicks' quest for one of the game's top scorers is puzzling. Why import an offensive rival for Stoudemire when Chris Paul wants to play on Broadway?"
-Mitch Lawrence NY Daily News Nov 30th 2010
New York Daily News Columnist Mitch Lawrence has decided that Carmelo Anthony is not a good fit for the Knicks. Lawrence has made statements in many articles covering Knick games that Carmelo is a similar player to Amar'e Stoudemire without actually revealing these similarities. I can't think of one thing that Melo does that Stat does besides getting to the foul line 15-20 times a game. Stat is a powerhouse post player that has developed a nice 15-17ft jumper and a pick and roll nightmare. Stat is a beast on defense and on the boards. Carmelo Anthony is a totally different player to me. A jump shooter with the ability to create his own shot off the dribble, can catch and shoot, runs screen and rolls perfectly, can shoot from three. Really, Melo can do anything he wants on offense.
Maybe I am crazy and don't know anything about basketball but the thought of any team in the NBA trying to guard Melo and Stat is something I'd like to see. Unlike the Heat, D'antoni's offense encourages making the extra pass so I don't see how Melo or Stat become one on one players but even if they do who is going to stop them? What team would not want two unstoppable forces? So Knick fans are Melo and Stat too similar? Who is the best fit?

Similar...hell no.
Mitch doesn’t know what he’s talking about if that’s his argument against it.
Would Carmelo fit here? Obviously he would. His offense is kinda sorta like Michael Beasley against the Knicks, probably more betterer. Would that fit? yea.
Who fits better among the 2 in the poll? Obviously CP3, no question. Amar’e is a finisher, CP3 is a great passer.
Tho none of this applies to what the Knicks should do with regards to building the best team under the cap and around Ray Felton and Amare.

Mitch is crazy
My feeling really is that the Knicks should sign Anthony and let Felton run the point. Use the cash for 2012 to keep the young players that develop into contributors or even stars.

ray felt + melo + stat > cp3 + stat

such a sick possibility. it means that chandler isn’t resigned of course, but think. the starting lineup in 2011…
pg Felton
sg Gallo
sf Melo
pf Amare
C Randolph (whoever has shown the most improvement).
Bench of Mozgov, Turiaf, TD, Fields, Buike (could start for Gallo if he regains his quickness), Williams, 1st rounder
Most Definitely
beautiful. if mozgov doesnt pan out id drop him, bring in a small guy, and draft a BIG MAN in the first round.

agreed.

Two things I just can't fathom.
1) How does a finesse shooting SF compare to the most dominate and powerful PF in the game to the point where they couldn’t co-exist? If anything Carmelo’s sheer presence on the floor would restrict teams from doubling and tripling Amare as much and if they choose to Carmelo would be open or have a one on one. If anything they make each other better. The spacing would be ridiculous.
2) I don’t understand how anyone could choose a max Paul over a max Carmelo with the way Felton has been playing. Don’t get me wrong, Paul is undoubtedly a better player than Felton and like Carmelo his presence on the floor would make our players better but if you have a choice to keep Felton and Amare while getting Carmelo at the same time, who in their right mind would rather go for Paul over that?
"Dedication To The Don" Most Popular Post Of All Time On P&T. I Am Honored
Paul is clearly superior (to everyone)
But if Felton can sustain a pace of 18 and 8 with good defense, you’re talking seriously diminishing returns by paying CP3 more than twice as much.
This year, I think the same can be said for Carmelo vs. the combination of Gallo and Chandler (who combined cost a fraction as much). But as those two get older they’ll get more expensive, and there is something to be said for having one reliable go-to guy replace two inconsistent, if talented, players.
The question is who fits better with Amare
CP3 or Melo. I say CP3 cuz CP3 is a better passer and a PG. I don’t understand how anyone can choose the volume shooter over the pass first PG to fit with Amare.
Nothing to do with Felton or building the Knicks as they are now.

yep...exactly
the PG’s job is to feed the beast that is STAT, CP is arguably the best at it, so If the question is strictly which one of the two is a better pairing with Amare, CP3 for sure. Not that Melo couldn’t fit here but that wasn’t really the question

because a player can "make the rest of his team better" without directly passing them the ball?

I just don’t understand why ppl feel Melo wouldnt be a good fit with Amare. With those two on the floor it would be impossible to double team either of them without paying for it and could you imagine how open the floor would be for our shooters with Ray Swishing and Dishing.
Mitch is an Asshole.
Could Landry Fields be our Derek Jeter? Things that make you say HMMMM!!!!!!
STAT FOR MVP!!!!!!!

"Offensive rival"
heh, good one.
It would be Kobe/Shaq with more versatility and less ego.

and how...
That would be my one and only concern with adding Melo to the roster, each night to win we’d have to score about 150 and only win on last second buckets
Yes Mitch is a fool
That is why I stopped reading him a long time ago.

First of all, nobody likes Mitch Lawrence! That is true. As for the poll, I voted for neither.
Obviously, I wouldn’t complain if we got either Paul or Melo, but Melo honestly doesn’t make a lot of sense. He thrives off isolation plays. The opposite of D’Antoni’s rapid ball movement and picknroll schemes.
Paul is amazing, but Felton is pretty damn good, and he’s healthier, and he’s cheaper.
I like both those players, but it makes no sense to trade a bunch of great role players, or blow a ton of capspace when they really don’t add something we don’t already have.
We need that center and back up pg.
They will be for!
