Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

David Lee is a last-minute All-Star.

From the Post:

Knicks forward David Lee has been added to the NBA Eastern Conference All-Star team as the replacement for Sixers guard Allen Iverson.

NBA commissioner David Stern made the announcement today. Iverson, who has an ailing daughter, is out for those personal reasons.

Congratulations to Dave, who many of us thought should have been chosen outright. Lee is the Knicks' first All-Star representative since Spree and Houston were on the bench in Washington in '01.

I guess this means I have to watch the game now?

Tips of the hat to SamH, riise, and Ray Smuckles for catching this and Jacob "Sgt. Lingus" Wolf for notifying me.

He's already in Houston...

was going to be the best man at a friend’s wedding if he didn’t make the team. Shouldn’t be too difficult for him to get from Houston to Dallas

Finally!

I’m glad we broke the no all-stars streak! But you just know his agent is going to ride this thing for a more money when it’s time to re-up. Who cares! I’ll be warm and fuzzy inside when I see a Knick in the all star game again! .

nice

he shouldve replaced iverson with mo williams, then replace mo with dlee. spread the all star love.

excellent point

Wouldnt be suprised if the Knicks were secretly rooting against it. Now its almost certain he wont resign. If he was looking 5/50 after last season, what will he want this year? Although hes only worth what someone will pay for him, and with all the free agents out there some of that interested money may go elsewhere before he has a chance to sign. If I were him I’d sign somewhere sooner rather than later.

what the hell

are you saying im not making an excellent point?

by enron4515 on Feb 11, 2010 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

you say it like Lee came up with that contract figure rather than his agent

who is supposed to ask for as much as he possibly can. Teams didnt bite on that figure either, so its a pretty moot point. I’m sure his agent will seek at least that amount this summer too. Thats his job.

congrats to d lee

Being the only replacement and replacing a guard he proves he barely missed the originally squad, and was the last left out, probably becasue of his D. i think the NBA selection process is based too highly based off your teams winning%, but ultimately the system played out for the best with Iverson the one Lee replaces..

This is giving me a raging Charles Oakley Boner.

halleluja

my prayers have been answered- perhaps this means Lee is up and out, but i have a stronger feeling this proves he’s worth MORE than 8/9 mil a year at least as a national symbol for our puny knicks team (i.e they will keep him as a center piece in the knicks future at least) as to the rest of the team/knicks season: sianara

Kudos to David for being the ONLY bright spot in a season i put way too much faith, money and energy in-

awesome for a legit all-star

more money for lee next summer? yes. more enticing for FAs to come here? yes, until they realize D lee is probably not resigning. I hope he does IF he plays PF. Anyone else get the sense that D Lee might take less money than he deserves cause he loves NY and wants to be here when they are competing? I just have that “team-oriented” feel. It’s like a posting and toasting vibe rubbing off on the team itself…pause.

Yo

It will be awesome to see what Lee can do when surrounded by really great players. That’s why it’s stupid to exclude great players on bad teams. Some people are up in arms that the Cavs only have one all star selection. Boo fucking hoo. They only have one All Star and that’s the way it goes. Of course, he is THE all star, if you just had to pick one.

Too bad about how he got in though. I hope Iverson’s daughter is OK.

Yeah, glad to have a Knick in the ASG

And good for him because yeah it will help him make more coin this offseason. Sure I hope he can stay with the Knicks, but not if NY decides to lowball him. He has been pretty loyal here.

Another note though… Jason Kidd to replace Kobe instead of Monta Ellis? THAT is a travesty.

lets be clear!

David Lee is NO allstar, his #’s are very deceptive. how can he be an allstar and he doesnt play defense!?! Stop it, are we all that desperate? give me a break, honestley i think dave is responsibale for the knicks being a poor defensive team over the last few years.
We will never make the playoffs with him as the starting 4 or 5

by FreejordanHill!!! on Feb 12, 2010 1:18 PM EST via mobile reply actions

thanks for pointing this out

its on David Lee for the Knicks having a weak defense. That makes perfect sense. Everyone else is solid, and he’s the weak spot. You’re right. We should just dump him. Maybe we can get Bruce Bowen to un-retire along with Dennis Rodman and put them both on our lineup and then we POOF, we have a defensive team.

Just one thing…. do you think Lee’s defense struggles could be hindered by the fact he is guarding the centers of the NBA on his own 6’9" frame, with the rest of our frontline predominantly playing near the 3pt lines and thus not a lot of help in grabbing rebounds or coming to help on D? You’ve considered that, right?

Sadly

I think this is true. Maybe adding him in a package could get someone to take one more year of Curry.

a Lee trade is unlikely

He’s a base year compensation player – that means that either he has to be included in a big deal or he needs to be traded to a team with cap space (and I don’t think there are any)…plus, he can refuse any trade, which, I would think, he probably would unless it was a team he reeeaallly wanted to go to. Plus, who would give us anything for him, knowing he might not sign? I really don’t think this is a realistic option.
