Donnie Walsh a failure?
I haven't seen anyone discuss this yet, but it seems like Donnie Walsh had a HUGE (Isiah Thomas style huge) mistake last year.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=TradeTalk-090217
Your telling me he went ahead and passed a straight up trade of Nate Robinson / Jared Jeffries for Kenny Thomas expiring contract last year because he was afraid to deal Nate.... and then turns around and flushes away 3 draft picks to get rid of Jeffries and trades Nate anyways?
Even if he had to include a draft pick last year to get the Kenny Thomas deal done we would still be better than we are now. He could have gotten a deal done somehow that was better than what we ended up with this year.
I like the idea of NY having cap space but it seems like Donnie Walsh screwed the Knicks by not having the courage to deal Nate...

I'd change the thread title....
Walsh ain’t a failure…more like he dropped the ball on this one. Nate was still in the team’s plans last year, so that’s why he didn’t deal him.
Hindsight is 20/20, so take that into account.

According to Alan Hahn of Newsday
This was never a serious trade proposal. It was a rumor that was out there, but it wasn’t really close to happening.
I remember being kind of relieved at the time that he didn’t trade Nate but looking back on it, that would have been a great trade.
Though I think we robbed the Celtics.
yea this too...
Bill Walker alone is reason to not give a shit about that Kings non-trade…or whatever it was

but jordan hill and all of our picks…..i dont think bill walker has THAT mch of an upside
<follow me @theinfamousazad
that's not the point
the cap space and the upside of what they can get with that..is the point.
Get HWSNBN...and they will come
but if this trade was done
We would have the money to get two FA’s and still have our picks…it wouldve packaged jeffries and nate for expiring contracts

but the flexibility that we have for the 2 biggest FA summers ever ARE.
Our picks and Jordan Hill have proved nothing yet. They are simply potential.

Failure is too harsh
But I do think that Donnie has made some mistakes that may end up being pretty significant, including picking Hill and giving up too much to dump Jefferies (should have dumped Curry if giving up all that).
But winning cures all. Maybe someday that will happen.

Whether it was true or not
this was old news anyway. Where have you been?
by StarksMiddleFinger on Mar 26, 2010 6:16 PM EDT reply actions
I brought up this "old news" because no one had yet
After all the the bad stuff the last GM went through for poor choices, I don’t think bad choices by Donnie Walsh should be swept under the rug either…
it was brought up
in mid February… of 2009… when that article was posted.
Would you like to talk about the presidential election as well? I hear that McCain is going to bring this unknown VP candidate into the mix.
Maybe we can chat about this newfangled thing called TV. They say one day we will be able to watch the Knick games on it, but I dont think I am going to like it as much. The radio just leaves so much to the imagination.
Also, whats with girls showing so much leg! Girls should stay covered, so as not to distract the men from bringing home a paycheck. Why do they need to show their knees when they are raising the children anyway?
Lastly, I am shocked that nobody brought up the new food that is sweeping the nation. They call it maize. The locals have grown it for years. I wonder what would happen if you heat it up? It may pop or something.
this ain't a bad choice...guy....
Bill Walker and JR Giddens could be important parts of the team going forward.
Without Nate, they don’t happen.
You can look at the “failure”…but how’s about looking at the positive from it?
If the Knicks assemble a contender next year, which is possible…those draft picks were just end of the bench fodder anyway….behind guys like Giddens and Walker.
This ain’t Isiah or Layden in the GM chair. This is a dude with a clue.

the most important part of the puzzle obviously
but on Donnie’s deals, i think he’s still good for a B grade; even if we got the short end of the stick a few times, now we’ve got opportunities in the future.
this is far better than the F+ that layden and good ol’ isiah earned in NY.

that B should jump
if he uses the extra cap space from houston to sign somebody decent.
Can somebody please get me a bacon latte first round pick?

he's no failure, yet
you can’t call walsh a failure yet. everything he has done so far has been to clear cap space for this summer. if we dont use the space to sign somebody to improve the team ,then you can call him a failure
Donnie Walsh Job So Far
Getting Mike D’Antoni. This is the one move I believe was his best move so far…
Mike D’Antoni has an uncanny ability to produce really good offensive players… players that that can fill a stat sheet… put up numbers. I remember when he was coach of the Phoenix Suns, the whole starting lineup was like top 50 in Fantasy NBA.
Good Offensive players are always going to needed… obviously because the primary goal in Basketball is to score… but in this case… having a great coach that can constantly produce solid offensive players or make decent players better… constantly gives Donnie Walsh valueable trade assets. Trade assets that he can use…
Getting the cap space is one step… which assortment of players he can convince to come to New York… I can’t wait to see.
And the Mike D’Antoni factor… He is a top-tier offensive minded coach and has Olympic credentials. Definitely a huge selling point to potential free agents.
Has-Ben Yes
D.Walsh looks like a Has-Ben, however, he has done what he said he would do in two years.
OK he gave away the farm a little with the draft and future picks.
But he did put the team in positon to be smart in 2010 towards F/A and also for 2011.
So all in all he did a very good job based on saying what he set out to do.
Now only thing is he looks like he just rolled out of bed in apprearance.
Sure does not look presidential.
But he did a good job in regards to putting the team in position for the future.
Now just finish the job.
#1/Sign J.Johnson as a F/A
- Resign D.Lee and do a Sign and Trade with Phoenix (D.Lee/E.Curry for A.Stoudemire)
- Pay up and get a solid draft pick to get C.Aldrich, D.Pittman or H.Whiteside
- Sign B.Haywood F/A
However, shame on him and his appearance.
yea, i've noticed some heavy dandruff flakes
starting a fight with his the don’s shoulder pads.
but he’ll draft ekpe udoh, and all will be forgiven.
god has condemned our team.
