Rebounding
I've been noticing for a long time that teams with a great rebounder at the power forward spot tend to compete every night. And teams that add a great rebounder at the power forward position tend to get a lot better fast.
By 'Great Rebounder' I mean a guy who's capable of pulling down 20 rebounds in a game.
Looking at the Grizzlies the other night, they have Marc Gasol at center, who is a good rebounder. Then they have Zach Randolph, who is actually a pretty great rebounder. Voila, they are a pretty good team.
The Knicks used to have a similar situation with Ewing and Oakley. I believe it was a bit part of why the Knicks stepped it up a level when they got Oakley.
But Oakley's rebounding prowess started to fade, and they traded him (this was actually a pretty good trade) for Marcus Camby, who is another guy who's a great rebounder. Yes, those Knick teams had ways to score. But they also barely ever got outrebounded. And as a result, they were almost always in the game.
These Knicks? They do have David Lee, who I think is somewhere between a good and great rebounder, and probably would be a better rebounder playing the power forward spot. But other than that, they just don't have anyone. Looking at Big C's game highlights, I see a lot of nice ball movement and skill on offense. But I think the rest of the league knows the deal with the Knicks - keep Lee from the getting the rebound and more often than not, you'll get it.
This is the most frustrating thing about the Knicks this year, to me. I'm actually looking forward to Curry playing again... because although he's a below average rebounder for a center, by virtue of his size and presence he's bound to get a few. And though it seems D'antoni doesn't prize rebounding, I'm hoping that's not true, and that he just happened to have players that weren't great rebounders.
I really miss those days when Ewing and Camby would play together down the stretch, pulling down everything.

dont remember where i read it
but curry apparently made an active return to practice the other day, and will suit up tonight. He will probably see time in a few days according to Coach. I agree with this article, we’ll see if it holds up. Curry can only help right now.
I never thought the day would come
That I am looking forward to Eddy Curry taking the court as a Knick. But you know what, for his sake, and our sake, I hope he plays like a world beater, because the better he plays, the easier it will be for Donnie to unload his expiring contract (next season) on some sucker team.

Eddy Curry is not going to help with rebounding at all
At ALL. I’ve personally never seen anyone of his size so bad at rebounding.
And for what it’s worth, D Lee has pulled down 20+ rebounds multiple times in his career. I totally agree of course that they need more help in the middle, but if they had a center who was halfway decent at rebounding, they’d have their great rebounding PF in Lee. There are maybe 5 or 6 PFs with better rebound rates than Lee this year, and that’s with him pulling in fewer offensive boards due to his enhanced role in the offense this year.
I agree with your Lee analysis
and Curry is a sucky rebounder for his size. But I still think he’d help, because as sucky as he is at rebounding, he’s better than Al Harrington at it.
walker had a lot of minutes in that game,,
his athleticism is supposed to help on the boards

maybe so
i didn’t check the stats. but being active on the glass makes easy opportunities for teammates. i’ve noticed, for instance, that wilson chandler doesn’t really create offensive boards, but if lee or somebody is battling with two opponents, wilson gets a lot of easy opportunities by waiting in the wings.
by that logic, when curry is eating up a lot of space in the low post, he tends to draw double teams, leaves weak side open. no team in the league wants david lee to have a clear path to a rebound.

furthermore
i know d’antoni is getting a lot of guff around knicks fandom, but he knows how to put players in a position to succeed. and he is a player’s coach because he leaves it up to them to get the job done.
chris duhon, awful as he was for the team, was pretty eloquent when explaining his situation vis-a-vis d’antoni’s trust. reporters asked chris why he sucked, and he didn’t pin it on d’antoni because it was impossible to.
point being, he gives you plenty of rope.

how much of this new trim Eddy Curry have we seen?
he’s no longer that hefty fat guy. And with his seeming appetite to play, I bet he does everything asked of him.
At the least, having another big guy who doesn’t just camp out at behind the 3pt line will force the opposition to box out Curry and give Lee better chances to cleaning the glass. Or Eddy commits himself to rebounding and he cleans the glass himself. Either way, it helps the Knicks.

Agree, in part
It did seem that when Curry was playing regularly that the doubleteams that he drew let Lee get some O boards. Lee hasn’t really been getting them since Curry became a fulltime spectator.
That said, Curry couldn’t board because he was fat. It was because his reaction times are just so slow. That’s a big reason he’s the worst defender in history as well.

Ouch. History?!
Could Curry’s fatness contribute to his slow reaction time?
I’d like to think his time spent in front of his XBox could gradually increase his reaction speed. Wonder if when he plays NBA Live he puta himself in the starting lineup? Who does he sit?
Should we outfit him with one of those sticks with a burger hanging in front of him?

Even before he got fat
He was never much of a rebounder. I’ve been reading his box scores since he came in the league. And that was the main reason I thought it wasn’t much of a good idea to trade for him.
scott skiles was once asked how eddy curry could become a better rebounder..
he answer? “he could try to jump”

i remember that
it made it unberably disheartening (no pun intended) to learn we had acquired curry after hearing that statement.
