Marc Berman wrote earlier this week that Joe Johnson may be available after all, and the
Atlanta Journal Constitution echoed the sentiment citing that his comments made have burned too many bridges in ATL for management to bring him back. For me that is neither here not there. Now the consensus around P&T world is that Chill Wil is not a shooting guard. But he plays most of his time at that position and let me challenge that assumption at least in regard to Joe Johnson. For Starters Chandler is a 2 guard, based on his ability to guard 2's I had someone explain to me that when they evaluate players and say a guy is a 2 or 3 or a 4 they are talking about his ability to guard players at those positions. Chandler is more correctly a swing man for what it is worth as he can effectively guard most 2's and 3's. What Chandler is not is a 3pt shooter. he shot .267 from 3. Which is a percentage that suggests the shot is not really in his range. However he averaged 15.3 pts a game last year even with that low 3 pt percentage and shot overall almost 48% (.479) from the floor. That means that he converted 52.3% of his 2 point fgs attempts. Now consider this. Johnson average 21.3 pts a game last year in ATL while taking 18 shots a game. Chandler averaged 13 shots a game. Given that Chandler's actual FG percentage was higher than Johnson's if Chandler took Johnson's number of shots he would have averaged 22pts a game or basically one point better than Johnson. So maybe rather than Donnie giving Johnson more money, D'Antoni should give Chandler more shots and provided that he does not use them on jacking up more three's (Note to D'Antoni you really need to discourage him from taking those shots). Why pay for Joe Johnson's numbers when we already have a guy who if used the same way can put up the same numbers for alot less money.
