How good can this new Knick roster be?
To be honest, I haven't been this excited for a Knicks roster in a long time! This feels great! We added great pieces and have money to sign another great player. To this point the roster stands like this.
Raymond Felton
Kelenna Azubuike
Wilson Chandler
Eddy Curry
Toney Douglas
Landry Fields
Danilo Gallinari
Jerome Jordan
Anthony Randolph
Andy Rautins
Amar'e Stoudemire
Ronny Turiaf
Bill Walker
Aside from Eddy Curry, who shouldn't be mentioned :). This roster is pretty good! I really liked Earl Barron from last year and I think we should re-sign him. In my opinion, this team can make it to the playoffs as a top-five team. Trying to put my Knick love aside, I think the Knicks can make a push next season.
So guys, how good can this Knick team be?

Depends on chemistry
and the youngins stepping up. Gallo, Chandler, TD and Randolph can all ball…but how well can they ball? Consistency is always a problem with a young team, especially a primarily young team.
You forgot Ray Felton in there. He’s gonna be the oil in the Knicks engine. That’s what Pringles has been missing these first 2 years, a PG who can actually ball and distribute. Is he Nash? Probably not…or at least I dunno now. Felton played uptempo at UNC, but then he was tried to be made into something he’s not in the NBA (it would be like making Gallo a post up player first instead….)
I’ve hear rumblings about Rasual Butler, and I’d love that. The Knicks could really use a veteran player, that’s not a cancer to the team like Larry Hughes or Al Harrington (tho Al wasn’t a bad personality, just the way he played was cancerous to the team).
I know its summer league, but I liked what I saw out of Rautins and Fields on day one. I think these guys could actually get minutes.
I think actually having a PG on the team, and a talent like Ray Felton who will be finally in an offense that suits him, along with him being very good defensively…the Knicks should at worst, be a 40 win team. With some progression, Pringles actually getting players that can help him win (read that again Pringles haters…), possibly more then 40.
Bye, Lee :(
Ray Felton
Is a great addition. He’s got something to prove to everyone who’s been hating on his career to this point, and Pring’les system is the perfect place for him to play.
I wasn’t that excited about our rookies this year, but Rautins and Fields both played well today. Hopefully by the time SummerLeague comes to a close, I’ll be hyped about them too.

its gonna be a rough first half
of players getting to know each other.
I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.
I hope they put in that extra time this offseason...
that along with the desire to put the “knicks of old” behind us.. I dont think its going to be that long of a time for the players to learn how to play along side each other… especially since Pringles wont be juggling the roster.
Toney does what the douglas do. And no one can do what he does b/c doing it without being Toney Douglas just doesnt make it do what it do
True
I added Raymond Felton, thanks!
Chemistry can make or break a team, aside from talent, chemistry is needed. i think that Felton and Amare can be a great duo. Us Knicks fans know how clutch Felton can be! Remember that 2OT game early last season?
New Look
This should be the season Gallo steps it up! He has been here for 3 training camps, more than but 3 or 4 teammates? We need to see the Rooster!
This team excites me

I think the Knicks can be shockingly good next year
Pringle’s offense I think will grow the team’s chemistry just by its style. It’s built on playing cohesively, and the fact that coach is stingy with the minutes makes you play the right way if you want to play at all. Donnie’s got the roster deep enough where D’Antoni will probably have guys on his bench that some people will think don’t belong there.
Lots of youth on the team, that’s definitely true, and consistency could be an issue. But the guys with the least experience are the 2nd rounders and Toney, who were all 4 year college players. Everyone else has been in the league 2, 3 years at least. And when you look at our young guys, there’s tons of talent. A lot of people are expecting Gallo to take a huge step forward this upcoming year. Anthony Randolph is now playing for the guy who helped Gallo grow into the lineup last year. Bill Walker has lost 27 pounds since May. You know how hard that is to do? You know how serious he must be about bringing his best game?
I think the Knicks can be real, real good next year.
I'd say this team has a good shot at making the playoffs this year,
especially considering how top heavy the East will be next year. However, regardless of how successful the team is, it will be fun to watch. Can you think of a more watchable team? Felton, Amar’e, Randolph, and Turiaf are objectively four of the most fun to watch guys in the NBA, and adding them to TD, Walker, Galo, and Chandler is going to make one fast, athletic squad featuring a group of guys who play with some serious passion. I always get an itch to watch some b-ball around midsummer, but this should be our most exciting (not to mention most talented) squads in a dog’s age.
All about the Defense guys.
I think it’s a given that we will score a carpload of points, but if the defensive infusion that has happened this offseason will really permeate into the games of the 2010-2011 season, watch out. If they platy defense, they have a chance at a possible 6th seed, which is saying alot in a much more competitive Eastern Conference.

Depends
If Gallo can turn into a consistent second scorer behind Ama’re.
How much production we can get out of Randolph.
How well this group defends
How well we rebound.
And the lenght of time it takes for the guys to get on the same page offensively.

are you serious!? where did he say he is 7’0? link!? cause if thats true what are we doing looking for a center!!!???

ha
not really but he is still small framed.. dude should get on the mcgee diet… Have yall seen him this summer league yet? He used to be frail body forreal.. now he looks like he’d be a force in the paint.
Toney does what the douglas do. And no one can do what he does b/c doing it without being Toney Douglas just doesnt make it do what it do
i watched him last game
and you’re right, he looks like a legit low post presence now. Doesn’t have randolph’s athleticism, but good comparison as far as how anthony needs to bulk up.

can we....
maybe take 25 pounds off Curry and give it to Randolph?
none of the positive things you guys mention
will happen unless we can somehow put a limit on the amount of squinting herb williams does. that is, unless we sign spanoulis.

T-Mac
……….can shoot the rock. How much do u think he’ll demand to play. His knees are shot but ill rather him take a last second shot then Gallo.
huh?
T-mac is no longer a Knick, so if he’s demanding to play it’s probably for the Heat or the Nets or the Wolves or something.
i think he meant how much will he demand to play contract wise

gallo
has nuts to pick the team up in the end.. or to stand up to opposing teams better players
t mac take himself out of games in the 4th quarter.. if you want to sit t-mac to keep his knees fresh and put a fresh off the bench guy whose rythem would most likely be off, into the game late for the last few posessions.. then thats your ill-advised plan.

Can't wait for the season to begin!!
I hope we can get Earl Barron since he proved in April that he’s ready to play better B-ball in the league, in addition his defensive awareness is pretty good.
I'd temper my expectations because
we are fielding a very young team with a young leader in Amar’e. I think we do 5 -10 games better then last year at least but I’m not so sold on anything higher then and 8 seed at this point.
That being said I do see this team gelling
as a defensive unit to the point where they could pleasantly suprise a few people including myself.
They should make the playoffs, I think
1. They have a real live actual point guard. Felton isn’t Chris Paul, but he’s a guy that can distribute and provide leadership on the floor at an NBA level. And he can shoot well enough from the outside to keep teams honest. Huge improvement over Duhon, and I love Toney, but Felton is an NBA point guard right now. And he’s a decent defender.
2. They now have some semblance of interior defense. Stoudemire’s not a beast in that regard, but he’s better than Lee. And they have Turiaf and Randolph who block shots, where they had no one last year.
3. Gallo’s got a year under his belt and will no longer be deferring to Al Harrington.
In short, they are better balanced. They will take some time to gel but they have a bunch of players that are good on both ends of the floor. Rebounding may be an issue depending on lineup, but they have good balance on the bench. I would be surprised if they weren’t at least 10 games better than last year, maybe 20.
Depends on what happens at the trade deadline
if we get Melo, Paul or Parker (yea, unlikely, I know), then this team’s going to be contending for a spot in the Finals. Not favorites, but a pretty damn good team.
If the roster stays the way it is/we pick up a shooter or defender at the trade deadline (so no additions or very minor ones) I see us getting 40-50 wins, with 40 being the pessimistic view and 50 being the optimistic one. It all depends on if we stay healthy, but we’re actually a deep team this season so we can sub out a Gallo/Walker/Stoudemire for a couple games if need to be give them a break.
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.
Vince Lombardi
Um
We have shooters (Gallo, Douglas, Azuibuike) and we have defenders (Douglas, Felton, Azuibuike, Turiaf, Chandler) so I don’t see why picking up a shooter and/or defender is going to help us. Sure, Melo or Paul replaced Felton or Chandler it would make the team a lot better, but outside of those guys I don’t think we could do much better at the 1,2,3 spots right now without signing an actual superstar.
It also should be mentioned
that there are alot of good pieces to this roster…..but out of the 14 you mentioned, plus the Russian, not everyone is gonna make the team….not everyone is gonna play. dantoni plays about 8 in his rotation so some players are gonna see alot of pine. The rookies most likely (although I hope rautins gets some burn)….the big guys turiaf / jordan / russian, especially if they are not running the floor, which I hope doesn’t happen because you need the opposing team to think twice about driving in the lane. Defense still has to be preached, just because you have better defensive players doesn’t automatically make NY a good defensive team..dantoni has to spend some time on that….all in all still alot of question marks with this team…..if everyone stays healthy (big if) and if the chemistry is there….10 games better is not out of the question…not sure if that makes the playoffs tho….we’ll see…
I doubt Barron's coming back
so that leave 14 with the Russian. That’s legal to keep all those guys on the roster. I’d be very surprised if Jordan’s not in the D-League.
Landry Fields should go down there too, even tho I think he’s ready to contribue. If they trade Will-Chan soon (which I hope they don’t), then Fields probably stays.
The Russian I think is gonna have to earn time, as well as others (like maybe Turiaf) not playing well.
I think the top 8 will be Amare, Gallo, Randolph, Felton, Chandler, DWTDD, Bookie, Turiaf. Rautins will get worked in over time. Maybe Walker wins out while Bookie’s still getting his legs back.
I’ve heard rumblings that Randolph may be our starting C, so Randolph, Amare, Gallo, Chandler/Walker/Bookie, Rasual Butler????, Felton.
Bye, Lee :(

Nah
Walker’s definitely in the top 8 Free. He had one bad game, and is probably just getting used to the fact that he’s 30 lbs lighter.
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.
Vince Lombardi
True
But if Azuibuke can shoot as well as him and play better defense than Bully might see less minutes.
is Azuibuke gonna be ready to play?
isnt he coming off an injury?
I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.
Yeah
but he’s supposed to be back in time for training camp. He was actually hurt in the first half of the season last year a couple of days after torching the Knicks.
probably, but that had nothing to do with the summer league game.
I just want to see it first. Fact remains, Bookie’s been in the league longer and getting minutes longer. Walker played great at the end last year and seems commited.
Really, I’d much rather have the rotation go a bit deeper. I think Walker’s a better offensive player (tho Bookie’s no slouch) and Bookie’s better on the D end.
Much rather see the rotation be 9 then 8. I hope Pringles realizes that he’s got more effective players then he normally has.
Bye, Lee :(

i think Mike D will have a bit longer rotation this time around
He was hamstrung last season by craptastic players. This season he has guys he can send out there confidently.
I also think the fact that they are young guys will help. Remember last year he kept saying they guys he had were not 10 min a night guys, they were all starters and if they were gonna play then they needed to play. Now, he has some younger pieces that may be more along the lines of a 10 min a night guy.
I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.
Actually the rotation will really depend on the players
If D’Antoni believes that only 8 guys will play well enough to give him a chance to win games, he will only play 8, if however one or two more guys show him something, then he will probably play 9 or 10. His general theory is that on most NBA teams it is hard to find more than 8 guys who can consistently game in and out give you productive minutes, but if he thinks he has more guys, he has said he is not opposed to playing more guys.
by Robert Currence on Jul 12, 2010 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions
I actually agree on that 8
I kinda think Walker and probably Turiaf (if Barron does come back) get the short end of the rotation tho….russian prob won’t play tht much either….I would love to see rautins get time tho….I kinda got a feeling about him, could be wrong tho…
i agree with the 8 too
except buke ahead of walker. I Take heed to what your saying free, but the fact still remains that he is questionable to be ready for training camp. Which means he def wont be 100% by seasons start. Walker should get those minutes lost by him …with the both of them probably splitting more and more time as bukes recovery gets better.
I also believe curry may get some burn too.. with the insecurties of having randolph play center and turiafs more than likely fouls
Toney does what the douglas do. And no one can do what he does b/c doing it without being Toney Douglas just doesnt make it do what it do
I think Rautins gets burn
His defense incertain situations and his catch and shoot could be a valuable commodity when we need to make runs. Prove it in practice concerning the other guys will get you minutes from MDA. And I actually agree with you Bee!
i think Rautins is gonna get burn too
he is gonna be the 3 threat from the bench.
I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.
the roster does look good
we are making the easter confrience finals. and battle it out 7 games. and take back whats rightfully ours here in newyork. the goal is set and we going for it all the way. this team thats been slapped together, is going to be a force in the league that will take down miami every meeting. i bet that randolph dunks on lebron or block lebrons shot/layup First. meaning before lebron this season. randolph looks like the type that give a Fu about a lebron james im dunking on him.. wade who take that.. plus ya just did some bullcrap down in miami. lol the russian is going to be a suprise he looks strong and stable and beasty on the floor for 7.1. o and yea he’s dunkin on yao ming
good optimism
but let’s not go crazy. i can’t wait to see NY play miami either, but 7 games in the conference finals??? That’d be a big surprise.

Great Future
The Knicks have a roster that looks like it can play many ways by going big, fast and or small with deadly shooters.
So that is why it is a team coming to the same goal. Not L.James. “Its All About Me”
GO NEW YORK GO!
If you think about it
The Knicks won 27 games last year and they were really only had solid talent and depth at small forward. In fact, they were always moving one of those small forwards to the 2 or the 4. Lee was a decent 4, forced to play the 5. Their only real point guard lost his confidence and his shot and was awful. Nate was a very limited player that was unreliable and Douglas was a rookie that had been more of a shoot first guy in college.
Now, we’ve got a real power forward, a real center in Turiaf, and a very talented player in Randolph to provide depth at those positions – plus we have a couple of wild card center prospects to develop. We are still strong at small forward with Gallo and Chandler. At shooting guard we have Bully for a whole season, but also Azubuike who is a good shooter and a good defender. And at point guard we have a rotation of Felton, a decent, experienced NBA point, and Toney with a year’s experience and confidence under his belt. And then we have Rautins, who can shoot and who seems to be smart, as a possible option there too. To round out the roster we have Fields who at worst will be a good practice teammate and who may very well figure out a way to succeed at the NBA level.
I mean, it’s really just night and day, in terms of balance. They now have nice depth at every position and a very high number of players known for their defense. Also, they are all young and at least there is the possibility of some lasting chemistry developing. Most of these guys seem to be good character/attitude guys. Amar’e’s had some run-ins and you have to wonder what got Randolph into Nellie’s doghouse, but so far they are saying the right stuff.
I’m trying not to get too optimistic but it’s tough, because last year there were really a lot of holes and this year the holes seem filled.
