This Season's Predictions: Anthony Randolph

I was trying to rack my brain on players that Anthony Randolph can be and what we could expect.  I came up with Josh Smith.  More after the jump.

Athletic freak.  Terrible/unwilling 3 pt shooter.  Crazy blocker/rebounder. Unfufilled potential.  Emotionally unstable.  Length for days.  Pause.

This is Anthony Randolph (we have a concencus nick name yet?)

This also is Josh Smith circa summer of 2006. I remember him being more crazy then sad looking, but had crazy potential.  Josh was dunking on kids but was playing recklessly.  Now, he's an evolutionary PF, who absolutely destroys the Celtics now and the 2nd best player on the Hawks (although this might shift in the next couple of years).

So I dug up Josh Smith's 1st 3 years:

Year Team G Min  M A Pct   M A Pct   M A Pct   Off Def Tot   Ast TO Stl Blk PF PPG
 2004-05 ATL 74 27:41  3.7 8.1 45.5   0.1 0.3 17.4   2.2 3.2 68.8   2.0 4.2 6.2   1.7 1.8 0.8 2.0 2.1 9.7
 2005-06 ATL 80 31:48  4.1 9.7 42.5   0.4 1.4 30.9   2.6 3.7 71.9   2.2 4.4 6.6   2.4 2.0 0.8 2.6 3.3 11.3
 2006-07 ATL 72 36:42  6.1 13.8 43.9   0.5 2.1 25.0   3.7 5.4 69.3   2.3 6.3 8.6   3.3 3.2 1.4 2.9 3.4 16.4

Here's AR's (default until new nickname given) first 2 years:

Year Team Min  M A Pct   M A Pct   M A Pct   Off Def Tot   Ast TO Stl Blk PF PPG
 2008-09 GS 63 17:53  3.2 6.8 46.2   0.0 0.1 0.0   1.6 2.2 71.6   2.0 3.7 5.8   0.8 1.3 0.7 1.2 2.2 7.9
 2009-10 GS 33 22:41  4.2 9.4 44.3   0.0 0.2 20.0   3.3 4.1 80.2   2.2 4.3 6.5   1.3 1.5 0.9 1.6 2.8 11.6

Pretty similar no?  This is especially similar if we extend the #'s out to AR's hypothetical 36 minutes/G:

The crazy thing is AR avg's are similar across the board in 9 less minutes of play.  Regardless, my guess is AR emulates Josh Smith's 2006-07 season and I can only hope AR gets 36 minutes of burn per night.  So my final guess:

16 pts / 7reb / 2 ast / 45% FG / 2 blks / 1.3 stls / 33 min/g / .3 emotional breakdowns

I think that's pretty conservative considering his per 36 minutes, although I'm probably really short selling his emotional breakdown #'s.

The clear distinction between AR and Josh Smith though is their footwork and handling, both of which I think Anthony Randolph has an advantage, while Josh Smith seems be a stronger player, which makes me believe that AR will eventually surpass the plateau Josh Smith has seem to hit over the next couple of years.

Thoughts?
