A Thread For Not Paying Attention To Chris Paul's Whiny Ass Right Now
Irritating. Goddammit. I just got through with the last superstar foot-kissing fest.
Listen, I understand Chris Paul is a great player and that he's disappointed with the direction the Hornets have gone in over the past few years. But I just don't want to take the bait here.
Why not, you say. Let me lay it out for ya.
1. Chris Paul is under contract through 2012. He signed it. No one held a gun to his head. Now, he looks at LeBron going to make beautiful music with a couple of other all stars. And he's like 'Waaaaaahh, trade me or else!'
Or else what? You're going to stomp up and down? Play like shit on purpose? Call your teammates scrubs? Oh, you've already done that, but rather than maning up and doing it out in the open, you sent the message out through your entourage. Nice.
You took a risk and signed a big deal for guaranteed millions. You don't like what the Hornets management has done. Well, you fucked up, kid. Make the best of it. Don't expect me to do rolling out a red carpet for you and trading all my good young players and sucking up to you with LeBronesque attention.
2. Raymond Felton is a pretty good point guard. Lets see what he can do before we relegate him to a backup behind Mr. Whiny. In fact, lets see what all these guys can do before we go salivating over some other guy. I think it sends the wrong message - to our guys. And to the kids. What about the kids?
3. I'm sorry, I just don't buy this so-called conventional wisdom that the only way to win a title is to get some 'big 3' together. In fact, it makes me sick to think about it. Teams win. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I know that in general, if you have a chance to get a transcendant player like Chris Paul, you've got to lose the attachment you might have to guys on your team that maybe aren't quite as good. But right now? This is really bad timing. Chris Paul thinks he's going to be traded by the beginning of the season? So did Carlos Boozer last year. Just sayin'. I hope New Orleans tells him to fuck off. I want to see what Felton and the Knicks can do. I say we wait.

I was going to post the exact same thing when the story broke, but I was too lazy. Glad to see someone doing the dirty work on the boards (fanposts).

1- I wouldn’t classify CP3 as whiney and I actually think he has that Durant humbleness that’s so rare in the league. He wanted to stay in New Orleans and he seemed dedicated to the community. He knew NO was a small market team but he signed the contract anyways.
That seemed to “change” when he joined LBJ’s group. They’re a PR massacre. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to win but jeez man, show some loyalty.
2- Let Felt play! He has a 3 year contract right? Show and prove.
3- As far as a the Knicks are concerned I agree with you. I’m not gonna sacrifice the young roster for the idea of the “Big 3”. I’m quite optimistic about this team and I’m not trophy hungry. Just entertain me damnit!

Since we haven't won since 73'
Im trophy hungry just like everyone else should be. I mean maybe not right away but we are getting better and I want to compete for the gold.
It didn't change when he joined LBJ's group.
It changed when the Hornets assembled a shitty team, traded Chandler and made no moves to acquire any difference makers. During all of that Paul didn’t say a thing, but I can understand why a player would be frustrated seeing his prime go to waste.
It’s easy to criticize a player who’s making $15 mill a year, but he was under the impression they’d put together a team around him. That hasn’t happened and if you want to see the last player to waste his best years for a non-contender, just look north to Boston and Garnett.

The mike the intern dude
posted a rumor about a trade proposal we offered today. This link
Dont know if its true but its interesting.
Paul's not allowed to demand a trade publicly
without geting fined or suspended.

assuming the rumors are true
what kind of player says “i want to be traded to one of these 3 teams?” F off, you’ll go where I trade you. Have fun in Memphis.
unless of course he has a trade approval clause in his contract. anyone know anything about that?
As far as I've been able to ascertain
He has no real contractual power. NOH can send him anywhere they want, or nowhere at all, of course.
To defend Paul
It’s far from unprecedented for an athlete to request a trade. Many of the all time greats have done it, including St. Patrick. Yes, he signed a contract with New Orleans, but so did New Orleans sign a contract with him. They have the right to trade him, so I think it’s fair that he could at least make his feelings known to the team.
All that said, I agree that there’s no real point discussing it now or at any point until the deed is done or not done. Even though Chris Paul would be my absolute number one favorite player to have on the Knicks (Cock forgive me), I’d rather just focus on the team that we have right now and enjoy them.

I get it
He’s not really an extra whiny guy – not like Stephen Jackson was last year. He’s basically been a good soldier to this point. I just find it annoying that the guy seems to be motivated by jealousy at LeBron’s Bosh Wade situation. I understand that guys get stuck in contracts they don’t want to be in and that sucks for him, and that he wants to win. But I think what he is doing is basically trying to force N.O to trade him to a team of his choice. Yes, he’s using his henchmen dropping rumors rather than saying it himself, avoiding a fine. But that’s what he’s doing.
I think that’s whiny. He ought to man up and play out his contract, and tell his team he’s open to a trade and at this point he’s thinking he’ll sign somewhere else in 2012. But this trying to force a trade thing? Unseemly. Not as bad as Stephen Jackson but still, not the kind of thing that’s going to make me drool over the guy.
OK
We’re basically in heated agreement. I’m probably extra lenient on CP since the notion of him in orange and blue is enough to bring me to half mast.

Chris Paul
when healthy, is THE best player in the NBA, bar none. I have nothing further to add, other than a starting lineup that will irritate most and enthrall some.
The 2011 NYK
pg – Chris Paul
sg – Carmelo Anthony
sf – Danillo Gallinari
pf – Amar’e Stoudemire
C – Anthony Randolph
"Game Knows Game"
Carmelo doesn't change positions for some Italian kid.

><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><>
This could maybe be the defensive lineup
if such players ever happened to be on the team at the same time. Offensively, Gallo is a little more SG and Melo is definitely a SF.
Really though, positions mean so little, especially in today’s NBA, and especially in our system. Who cares? Put those 5 on the floor and good things would happen.
whats wit ppl saying gallo is more a 2??
no way.
Toney does what the douglas do. And no one can do what he does b/c doing it without being Toney Douglas just doesnt make it do what it do
that ain't changing positions...

I think it's amazing
That a few days ago everyone was pumped beyond belief about this year’s roster. Then one of Chris Paul’s friends drops a rumor and people come out of the woodwork trying to get CP3 in orange and blue. I, for one, am much more excited to see how our chillins play together this year, to see Amar’e in the paint, to see TD barking out orders and to see AR getting everyone in MSG wet with joy. Not to mention the Cock. If it means giving up AR, Gallo, and TD just to get Paul and Okafor, count me out.
Let’s see what this Knicks team can do first.

any moves that make us better are great, but the team is already set up to be great as is. I’m fine with whatever, even if it is nothing. I feel all of P&T should adopt this sentiment and plant some trees instead of hanging on to rumors like lifelines.

Paul isn't going anywhere until 2012
What reason does NO have to trade him? They have him under contract for two more years before he can opt out. He is a crowd draw for them so why trade him. And if they did trade him right now they would be looking for more than the Knicks or anybody else with sense would be willing to pay. If you guys must drool over Chris Paul can we at least wait until he can officially become a free agent.

I’m a 20x daily reader here @ P&T but just recently started posting. I am 100% in agreement with fuhry on this post. Like it sucks to be stuck in your multimillion $ contract. I’m not for rearranging the plan B or E or whatever we ended up with, just to appease a change of mind and a desire to be like the LeJoneses. If we can get him without giving up the farm, COOL. If not, I would like to think he needs a change of scenery more than we need him to change our scenery!

If its a fair trade I am all for it
but I really like our team and I am actually excited about Felton.
Our team has a real underdog spirit right now that trading for Paul would ruin. I actually think we would be much better served to try to get paul after this season. When NO would be more inclined to trade him, since he will only have 1 year left, and we can prob do it without having to take Okafor.
I get Pauls disappointment. It stinks to have your team construct a firesale around you. But yeah, he signed the deal. And NO is a hellova city. Its not like he is stuck in the middle of nowhere.
I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.
I'm Of the Thinking of
what do I care about Chris Paul and where he’ll spend his mega millions next year. I can’t keep up with all the posts and speculation and my time is better served adding to my own mega millions (even if it is just a penny jar). A lame summer of speculation and dog and pony acts has me ready to watch my team as is and let whatever plays out play out. Folks are hot on our roster one day and trading it away the next. I’ll roll with whatever we got but I’m bored of all this “hey! Look who’s coming to dinner” crap. I’m pretty sure when DW started this it was in making room for a trifecta of top players, so it’s perfectly reasonable he trades away the assets we just acquired plus Curry for the last 2 “Superstars”. I’m just not holding my breath or wasting my time on another post that doesn’t definitively say we’re acquiring player x.
I checked this post twice
and I can’t find even one sentence that I agree with. I have as much Knicks pride as anyone, its not about bowing down to any star. Its about a ‘good’ team not being good enough. We’ve waited over 10 years. We need to beat the shit out of the Big 2 1/2 in Miami, and if CP is serious about doing it before the season, we need to do everything within reason to make it happen
I see your point, I really do
But let’s say we have to trade Azubuike, Randolph, Curry, Turiaf and Chandler for Paul and Okafor. We seriously impact our size and our defensive ability when we do that. Is it worth it? It’s really hard to say before these guys get a chance to play together. If we were to make that trade we would not be getting under the cap next year.
Might be worth it – I’m just not sure.
chris paul hasnt done shit: pass on him
why would we need his baby whining ass in ny .. he choke in pressure cuz he aint man enuff for ny. i say we give felton the reins and see how he performs… we should go for melo if anyone
+1
I understand the guy’s frustrations with Hornets management but I don’t think this business speaks well to his character. Everytime some superstar starts wanting to get out of a contract they signed all acting like the victim I start wondering whether that guy wil ever win a championship.

If the Knicks were Cheeses:
Amar’e: Sharp Cheddar – Strong, loud, worth $100 million
Gallo: Mozzarella – White, and stringy, can get caught in your throat if you don’t chew
Mozgov: Limburger – Foreign and sometimes awkward, but overpowering nonetheless
Rautins: Swiss – Tasty, but has some big holes
Wil: Gruyère – sometimes bland, but ages well

on that team that bron, wade and bosh played on that brought home the gold.....
paul was the pg, and he was the best player on that team by FARRRRRRRRRR.
So it would be kinda kool to stick to mia. and snag him as long as we dont take back that horrible contract. With that said DW is to smart for that and I think he knows if CP3 is on board Melo is in the bag. DW is about to hit NW with the blitzkrieg. lol

How about defensively? ‘Cause I know how a lot of fans are – they don’t pay any attention to that, as if it doesn’t matter.
Can CP play defense as well as Toney and Felton can?

I would love Chris Paul on the Knicks and I would trade anyone to get him
However, the Knicks now have two young players that can both cross the threshold of “very good young player that shows flashes of brilliance” into perennial All Star caliber players. Gallo and AR have the ability to grow and create our own BIG 3.
The question is, would it be more fun to watch these young guys turn into the next Wade or Lebron level players or don’t bet on potential and get CP3 and Melo.
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
Exactly
Best option: Team stays as it is, Gallo/AR/Felton develop and we contend for a championship
2nd best: Trade for CP, team contends for a championship
3rd best: Don’t trade for CP, team is good and fun to watch but does not contend for a championship
worst option: Trade for CP, team does not contend for a championship due to lack of depth, CP getting hurt or just being to whiny, or lack of defensive intensity and team-ness.

- ain’t so bad. Especially since this isn’t the only chance they’ll have to elevate the roster. Melo may be interested, Paul or no Paul. Paul may be interested himself in 2 years (particularly if NO sticks a foot up his arse and doesn’t trade him). Trade opportunities may crop up for Eddie Curry’s Expiring Basketball Career.
Donnie needs to be Cool Hand Luke here because he’s holding the cards. He seemed to get bullied a bit in his salary dumps last season, but he had no leverage. He had leverage with Golden State and came out sh*ttin’ daisies. He has the leverage here (dependent on what other teams involved offer up).
If they can steal Paul that’s great, but he’s gotta remind himself and NO that this team is going to make the fans happy as is (which can’t be understated with how the past decade has gone), and there will be other opportunities to nudge towards contention without forcing this trade.
we don't even have to choose!
I kind of really hope NO just tells Paul to shut the fuck up and play out his contract. I would like all this speculation to be quashed, and moreover I would like to give Gallo and Randolph the opportunity to shine.
Both Carmelo and CP3, if they are both smart, serious about winning, and genuinely interested in joining the Knicks, must surely understand that we have put ourselves in a position to be able to sign both of them at the end of their current contracts, without giving up any talent whatsoever.
What is better, making the team you want to play for gut their roster to get you now? Or waiting a little while (and jeez, it’s not even that long!) to just sign up outright and play for a team that is freakishly stacked?
We could eventually put a Big Five on the court: 2012 opening day line-up of CP3/Gallo/Carmelo/Stat/Randolph. All it will take is patience. That’s it! Just a two year wait for a team that would absolutely WRECK all comers, including Miami, for years to come.

If Randolph, Gallo or Chandler develop into the players we imagine them being,
in 2 years, there is no way we keep any of those 3 guys and have Paul and Melo, so the whole without giving any talent up whatsoever looks cool and all in italics, it’s not completely accurate.
by al's brick foundation on Aug 2, 2010 4:42 AM EDT up reply actions
you can go over the cap
to resign your own players and Dolan has no problem paying the luxury tax. i know we’ll at least have gallo and chandler’s bird rights, maybe randolph’s as well? i guess it’s possible the new CBA could institute a hard cap but my sense is that the league wants to make it easier, not harder, for teams to keep their own players.
Chandler's probably out of here though
unless he takes a huge step forward this season. his $9mm cap hold at the end of the season is u-g-l-y
I know I am late but...
Fuck yea… couldn’t have said it better myself. Didn’t we just go through a 2 year cock tease with Lebron? Didn’t we learn anything? I want see this team play. Fuck everyone else and their opinions on the knicks "inferior’ talent
I will come right out and say that I’d have rather had Paul (if he’s totally healthy) than LeBron in the first place. It’s not necessarily a basketball decision, but a preference. I don’t hate LeBron but I just feel like he’s probably an overgrown kid who just wants to be loved and worshipped and isn’t about killin’ it. Only thing he kills is my basketball hard-on with that “brand” of his. I’d have rooted for him if he came here but I wasn’t dying for it to happen. Everyone can call me crazy if they want.
But that’s not so relevant and I agree with what you’re saying. They can still pursue Paul but the front office and fans better not grab their ankles and spread for any more ‘basketball royalty’. The team’s moving towards demanding respect again and the fans are feeling the same way.

Hello everyone, I’ve been following this blog and reading up on the articles and fanposts for some time now and finally decided to make an account.
with regards to the CP3 rumors: I’m not a fan of it as fuhry posted above. i’m pretty sure a lot of you guys feel the same way. I think raymond felton will do a commendable job at the PG esp. with Pringles’ system. He’s a smart player and will finely adjust to executing pick-n-rolls with amare.
another issue with CP3 that i have in mind is that the dude came back from knee surgery and missed a good chunk of last season, never really looking like his old self when he came back. i’m not writing him off yet, but we still don’t know how he’ll perform for the full season after the surgery. i don’t think it will look good on the knicks part for signing felton in the first place. we brought him in with the intention of starting and now he’s being relegated to the bench spot and used as bait since he can be quite expendable with cp3. that’s just disrespectful to felton.
the absolute worst case scenario for us would be if we somehow got paul and god forbid, both he and amare go down with knee injuries. imagine the headlines…i dread thinking about that awful possibility.
first i am one who is strongly against getting CP3 even though he’s a great player. it’s just we have a fine PG as is with felton. also, getting cp3 means that okafor is certain to be included in whatever deal as well. that is an absolute no-no. the dude’s contract is suffocating and after all we’ve been through to clear cap space, this guys devours almost all of it for about 3 more years or so. not only that he’s done playing his best ball.
if we trade for cp3, we’ll most likely lose a lot if not all of the promising young talents we have. i’m sure none of us really wants this to happen. the cp3 trade will be bad for us for the long run.

I'm listening to you - not Paul, my friend
I’d be shocked if CP3 was a Knick next season and that isn’t a bad thing.
1. While we value our youth and depth, New Orleans would likely be more interested by offers from teams like Orlando and Houston who have more established players to deal.
2. That is IF Walsh and D’Antoni pull the trigger and start offering the farm. Which makes no sense. They’ve damaged their reputations over the past few years by putting a sh*t team on the floor – trying to rectify the “get a star at any cost” mentality of the Isaih era (Thank God Dolan isn’t interested in bringing him back…) Why would they give up so much for a Top 5 talent who happens to come with injury and attitude concerns and get stuck with Okafor’s contract? I don’t see it. If this was their thinking from the get go, they wouldn’t be paying Felton nearly 8M a year…they would have paid Ridnour half that.
I like Felton a lot and think that he can become a top-notch leader on this team. He has a much thicker build than Paul (helping with durability), is still a very quick and unselfish playmaker, and brings an improved presence at defense. I think the Knicks should stand pat with their thinking when they signed Felton – let him start for at least the next 2 years, if Douglas doesn’t become starter quality by then, excercise the rumored 3rd year option or sign him long term. In the mean time, develop the youth and defense that we haven’t seen in years, develop a playoff team, and next summer hope that a player like Anthony comes in and puts us over the top.

To be fair
I don’t really know if me characterizing Paul’s ass as “whiny” really means there are “attitude concerns” in general. Paul’s no Marbury. His phantom trade demand and Yankee hat wearing are concerning but he’s been a good character so far.
But yeah, the more I think about it, the less this makes sense right now.
I know that I’m irrationally optimistic. But I don’t see this year’s Knicks fighting for the 8 seed. I see them fighting for the 5 seed. And for a team that’s with an average age of 23.5 and guys on the roster who have room to improve, that is exactly where you want to be.
So if I’m right, the Knicks should not gut their team to add Paul, and should not take on Okafor under any circumstances. If I’m wrong, we’re still in a cap / asset position to improve our team next offseason.
