Knicks Official Offer To New Orleans...?

I have NO IDEA who this AnthonyMSG guy is but he supposedly has the offer we made to New Orleans for Chris Paul and Emeka Okafor earlier today

Spoke to #Knicks source. Saying The #Knicks are offering Chandler, Randolph,Azubuike, Turiaf, and The Mid Level to NO for CP and E.O.

I've been doing some research and we can apparently trade the players from Golden State before Dec 15th. Raymond Felton, Amare Stoudemire and Timofey Mosgov are the guys that can't be traded until the 15th because they were free agent signings. Traded players can be traded after 60 days. I don't know if this guy knows his stuff or if he's just out of his mind but either way I had to inform you guys of this in case this is legit. He says we are giving up the MLE which we don't even have which raises the red flag of him being a dumb ass. Maybe he meant Curry's expiring? Who knows, pick your brains at this one.

Even though I dislike Chris Broussard, here's a article he wrote about where CP3 might go. He was right about LBJ going to MIA, he could be right about this. You can also find a video of him on ESPN here, talking on the matter.

The New York Knicks are the first team on point guard Chris Paul's wish list of clubs he'd like New Orleans to trade him to, according to sources.

Orlando, where he could team with superstar center Dwight Howard, is the second team on Paul's list, which includes Dallas and then Portland, according to sources.

In the ideal scenario, Paul and the Denver Nuggets' Carmelo Anthony would wind up in New York to play alongside Amare Stoudemire, forming a big three that could compete with Miami's newly formed super trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

"Those guys want to beat the three guys in Miami," a source close to the situation said. A report Wednesday on CBSSports.com said Paul saw what James did in signing to play alongside Wade and Bosh and has designs on doing something similar.

Anthony has one year left on his deal with the Nuggets before he can become a free agent. The Nuggets, meanwhile, have offered Anthony a three-year, $65 million contract extension.

Anthony has until next June 30 to sign the extension, and the Nuggets have said they have no intention of trading Anthony. While most league executives believe Anthony will sign the extension, several sources close to him said he will not sign and that his ultimate desire is to play in New York.

Meanwhile, the Hornets have scheduled a face-to-face sitdown with Paul for Monday in New Orleans, sources with knowledge of the meeting told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

The Hornets, the sources said, will be represented by team president Hugh Weber, general manager Dell Demps and coach Monty Williams, with the hope that Paul -- once he has his first extended conversation with the new GM and coach -- will give the Hornets' new basketball decision-makers an opportunity to sell him on their plan to improve the roster.

If they are not presented with realistic scenarios that convince Paul that New Orleans can build a contender very quickly, he'll ask the club to begin speaking to the Knicks, Magic, Mavericks and Trail Blazers about possible trades.

Paul's demands come in the immediate aftermath of a Hornets overhaul within the coaching staff and front office. A little more than a month after making 38-year-old Williams the youngest coach in the NBA, the Hornets hired Williams' longtime friend and former NBA teammate, 40-year-old Demps on Wednesday.

The pitch is expected to include reminders that the Hornets, despite ongoing uncertainty about the proposed ownership transfer from George Shinn to Gary Chouest, had a payroll close to the luxury-tax line last season and would have been in tax territory again next season if not for the draft-day deal that sent Morris Peterson to Oklahoma City.

The Hornets, sources said, will use that reminder to support their claim that they have shown a willingness to spend in recent seasons but spent their money poorly. Sources maintain that Paul's increasingly strained relationship with former GM Jeff Bower was a major factor in Bower's dismissal, but Weber contends that Demps -- after five seasons in the Spurs' highly respected front office -- will make better use of New Orleans' resources.

If this is true

that’s too much to give up. Opposing teams will just double team Stoudemire, and Paul will have no one to pass to.

If we can have him for less, then yeah, but that offer is ridiculous.

Our current team is exciting, and we really need to see it play before we blow it up.

They will be for!

Exactly

Trading away all those guys we’ve gotten so excited over right away would suck. Azibuike can come back healthy and contribute, Randolph can blossom into a beast, these guys are question marks but if they pan out then we are straight.

im not saying its ideal but it also isnt terrible. we would keep gallo and td, after december 15 felton is a very tradable asset, and we still have curry’s 11 mil off the books at the end of the year. randolph certainly has the potential to be great, but CP3 already is. i obviously dont want to take back emeka’s contract, but that deal isnt terrible by any means.

Im sorry, but

Any time you get a chance to get Chris Paul you absolutely do it. I like the roster we have assembled this summer, but in all honesty, you’d have to be kidding yourself if you didn’t think that Donnie and Pringles would do whatever it takes to get the best point guard in the league. This might sound harsh, but the fact of the matter is this: Azubukie, Turiaf, Randolph, and Wilson Chandler are fungible, meaning those guys can be replaced. The only one I would be sad to see leave would be Randolph, but you do what you have to do. If those guys from the Warriors were truly difference makers the Warriors wouldn’t have traded them away, much like we gave up on David Lee.

My sentiments as well.

Plus we lose a lot of depth we haven’t had before as well as solid defense we haven’t had. To me, we have the offense, we needed the defense and depth to get over the top, stop the bleeding at ends of games, and to get role players who can fill in gaps. We have that potential and I’d hate to blow it up before December and we don’t get to see what could be with what we already have.

by screamedia on Jul 22, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly

I agree with Alan Hahn, I don’t think we have a good chance at landing him before the season. Hopefully Paul hasn’t played his last game in a hornets jersey and we get to see these ex warriors play in Knick jerseys before we shovel them away. If we can get Paul I would much rather it be in the middle of the season so we know exactly what we are giving away after seeing them play.

Considering Chris’s past injury, I think we would be taking a big risk on this guy if we gave up the alleged package for him. If this true then the Knicks should rethink thier strategy foring acquiring him.

when he says The Mid Level

he has to be talking about curry’s contract.

math doesnt work otherwise and works perfectly with curry’s contract in it, if that is what he meant it would put the knicks exaclty at 58mil, resulting in vet minimums to fill remaining roster spots

Gotcha

thats what i originally thought.

by 2017MaxCat on Jul 22, 2010 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

question

i thought that because as of right now we were slightly below the cap we had the freedom to make trades without having to match up salaries exactly… is that comepletely wrong?

by BronxBeliever on Jul 22, 2010 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

no thats correct we have 3mil of wiggle room

but new orleans is 10mil over the cap so for it to work it has to work for them too

by babyeater26 on Jul 22, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

the deal would result in around 22mil of salary going to them

and 25 coming to us resulting in us being at the cap and them at around 7mil over for this year

by babyeater26 on Jul 22, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

in that case i like this deal a lot less. having curry’s expiring still at the end of the year was a big reason why i liked the deal, w/o we have no flexibilty next offseason if we cant figure out how to move okakor’s deal (which even donnie probably couldnt do)

by BronxBeliever on Jul 22, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

And thats why

Okafor has gots to go! Horrendous contract he has.

"As humans we strive for success but live with fear. If success was inevitable, fear cannot exist" Michael Kelley

by MikeTheIntern on Jul 22, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

it would be ideal to do the deal with posey instead of okafor or for just cp3

but lets be honest the deal has to be good enough for the hornets to want to do it, and i think dumping okafor’s deal is the only way to justify it for new orleans

by babyeater26 on Jul 22, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

i was just going to say that

why not do the deal above but for posey and cp3. if theyre around 10 mil over for next season, that move would get them down to the cap while still netting them a bunch young talent. it would be around ~11 mil going to them and ~21 mil coming here

by BronxBeliever on Jul 22, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

the hornets hold all the cards in this

and no matter what the rumors are they will set the price.

if one of the teams on cp3’s list can swallow the pill of trading away young talent and assets for cp3 AND bad contracts theyll land him. if not i dont see why the hornets would jump into a deal without getting max value for a player of cp3’s caliber. they can solve the financial issues that face them down the road and get young at the same time, its all up to them

by babyeater26 on Jul 22, 2010 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

thats completely true

but the deal with posey and paul gets them well away from the luxury tax threshold while also netting them 3 solid young players and turiaf. im not sure anyone can offer that kind of youth while also saving the hornets 10 mil this season and another 7 of posey’s deal in 11-12. in an ideal world they would obviously force okafor down someones throat but in dont think they will get as much talent in return if they do.

by BronxBeliever on Jul 22, 2010 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Because

When any player is upset with their situation AND a team is trying to cut salaries they never get full value. Thats the way it is. Now that’s not to say the hornets can’t demand a certain amount, but full value is what you get when someone inquires about a player out of the blue, not a player who has said he is unhappy with the situation.

Also they hold a lot of leverage but far from “all the cards.” There’s the card of finding play time for Darren Collison, they don’t hold that card with Paul there. There’s the expiring contracts, dont see that card. The disgruntled player card they are most definately holding though

by revans on Jul 22, 2010 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

There is no way in hell the Hornets trade CP3 without Okafor as well.

If the Hornets trade CP3 they will look to blow the whole operation up and start anew. That means the lucky winner in the CP3 sweepstakes gets Okafor. And all honesty, Okafor would actually be a nice complementary big man to have for Amar’e. Contract aside, I actually like Okafor, dude can rebound and block shots. He’s not a human black hole like Eddy Curry.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say our fan base has gotten so immune to mediocre basketball that they have a hard time letting go of their “favorite worker bees” for a Superstar that can lead a team.

Alan Hahn on ESPN 1050

Doesn’t think Knicks can land Paul for a bunch of potential and an expiring contract. Says the only way we can get Paul is if Paul pushes to be traded to us and not anyone else. Only if he really really wants to be here. He also thinks that eliminating ourselves from the Melo sweepstakes by taking on Okafor isn’t smart. Says he wouldn’t put Gallo in any trade for Paul and thinks we have a 10% chance to land Paul before the season starts but the chances increases if this goes on and last through the season. He thinks Melo is basically destined for New York as well. Thinks too many things add up for him coming here. BUT we said the same about LBJ annnnd… well he’s in MIA.

by MikeTheIntern on Jul 22, 2010 3:40 PM EDT reply actions

On the Melo part,

the difference is, there’s really not many teams that have 2011 max cap room.

And of course, the major kicker, the only reason LeBalls is in Miami is cuz he wanted to go with the other 2.

That was the reason NY was high on the list previously, cuz it was being made out like there was a chance they’d have enough for a “Big 3”…thanks Eddy/Isiah/Layden/Dolan.

There’s really not many other options for Melo, if he becomes a FA. New Jersey? Yea right…

by MikeTheIntern on Jul 22, 2010 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

well...to be honest,

while I hate the Okafor contract….CP3 means a HO HELL of a lot more to a team then Melo.

The Knicks, should they get this deal done (i.e.: NO GALLO IN THE TRADE!!), will have a player who’s not unlike Lebrawn Jameses in how he improves the level of his team.

Essentially, you have a NO Hornets style team, except a youn Peja (Gallo ) and a better David West (Amare).

CP3 is a great player that affects the team way more then Melo does. If I can do this deal, basically the right way (if he has to include Okafor, no Gallo, yes Randolph)…then do it.

CP3 is a much better player then Melo. Plain and simple. Love to see em both on the same squad (Melo’s only signed 3 years if he signs….CP3’s 24, Melo 26 I think…so there’s a chance to do it again)

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 22, 2010 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

They also asked if we should include Gallo in the Paul trade.

Mike said he’d get rid of him if it was the last thing that stood between us getting Paul, “Bottom line is, I don’t care about home grown talent. The teams have to win” “Would you rather have Gallo and finish 8th? Or would you rather have Paul and finish 4th or 5th? I’d trade Gallinari if you have to” He said that and the fans that called in went off on him. They weren’t heated but they disagreed. Funny stuff.

If Paul comes here now we will not have the money to sign Carmelo. so it is a moot

point. The only way to get them both is to stick to the original plan. We will have enough for Anthony next year, and then when Felton, Turiaf, and Walker come off the books, we will have enough to sign Paul. Can’t yall see this is the Lebron BS all over again.

by Robert Currence on Jul 23, 2010 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Many ways to skin dat cat RC

We could sign CP3+Okafor and still trade for Melo with a package like Gallo+Felton+Moz+Chan.

We could sign CP3 and then trade Felton for an MLE and/or draft picks so we’d have the cap space for Melo.

Nirvana might be us keeping Gallo and AR while signing both Anthony and CP3 as FA’s…but do you really think both teams are gonna let those guys walk w/o a trade and both players are gonna wait it out, risk injury, and maybe lose $50M+ by not signing sooner? That seems just as crack-pipe crazy as most of the trades we throw around.

Who knows what will happen, but with a solid PG in Felton, a young Peja in Gallo, a KG/Odom type talent in AR, a complete stud in Amare and decent young supporting cast too…whatever happens should be the best we’ve seen in many years.

by Left Coast Cowboy on Jul 24, 2010 2:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Also who plays shooting guard, and where is the depth on the bench?

by Robert Currence on Jul 24, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Even gutting our roster, if we get the right guys we'll be fine

Such as:
C – Oakafor
PF – Amare
SF – Melo
SG – Walker/Fields/Rautins (may the best man win)
PG – CP3

As for depth, I’d look at Miami and the impressive job they’ve done building out that squad with Miller, Haslem, and a mix of cheap youth and vets (e.g. Juwan Howard and Zydrunas Ilgauskas). Next year they’ll add more with their MLE.

If you build it, they will come.

Its BS the Knicks are pretty much at cap, depending on how it is viewed

We are either at cap of have about 2 mil. Either way for us to trade now we would have to match Salaries. The palyers listed their would not be enough to match Paul let alone take on Okafor. We don’t have a MLE this year and since we are projected to be under the cap, do not have one next year either. Secondly, you cannot trade a MLE, you can only give a trade exception and we don’t have that anymore. Not gonna happen, one the league wouldn’t sign off on that trade, and two Donnie wouldn’t pull that trade.

Yes because we still are 2 million under the cap,

But any trade we make has to come within two million.. Chris Paul and Okafor, account for 26 million in Salary. That means we have to trade back 24, we can absorb the remaining 2 mil with our left over cap space. The rumored trade proposal has only 11.2 million in salary going to Charlotte, that means we have to trade 13million additional. Which then means Curry and Douglas. That is 6 players for Chris Paul and Okafor, and then we would still need to fill 4 Roster spots. And here is the Kicker, All of you who want Carmelo next year, there is no room on the Slary cap to get him without trading either Okafor or Paul plus another player. Seems like a dumb deal to me. We would be better going with what we had, and then trading for Paul next year, when NO would not have as much leverage and we would have more cap space.

Why do we have to get Chris Paul here?

Have you seen him play since his injury, how do you even know what he is capable of. A Meniscus tear for a point guard is a serious injury, and one that will become Chronic. Look at Bynum in LA he has a chronic problem with his meniscus. Paul suffered a repetitive use injury, not a trauma injury like a torn ACL, therefore the odds of it recurring in the next year or two are very high, especially if he is logging heavy minutes.

Penny's a better example

the old penny from orlando and early part of the 01-02 season had all-world game but after knee surgery he was screwed and what we had for his stay here

The more I think, the more I think this deal shouldn't happen unless it's the kind that gets declared a Heist by the press

If you can’t get Paul for Eddy Curry, Toney Douglas and Wilson Chandler, then walk away. No Okafor, no Gallo, no Randolph. They can have a 2nd rounder if they want it bad enough to beg. Chris Paul, an MVP candidate at the height of his abilities is worth one of Gallo or Randolph in a trade. The Chris Paul we’re talking about is the one who’s crying like a fucking baby and is fresh off a knee injury that cost him most of his 09-10 season.

Look at it from the Hornet's perspective

Would you trade your star player for an expiring deal and 2 unproven players when the team you’re dealing with has 2-3 guys with bigger ceilings?

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

Meh

Can’t we do that deal without Azubuike? I know the salaries need to match, but I’d rather keep him.

But, if you look at it this way, it’d basically be: Lee, Chandler and Curry for CP3 and Okafor. Not bad.
