Hornets Prefer To Keep Paul
Chris Paul and the New Orleans Hornets were scheduled for a meeting today and are actually in that very meeting as I type. Paul is expected to issue a formal trade request at the meeting sometime today although Hornets President Hugh Weber has maintained that he has no interest in trading Paul.
The New Orleans Hornets prepared for their highly anticipated sitdown with star guard Chris Paul by turning away the latest flurry of trade calls from other teams, according to NBA front-office sources.
Sources told ESPN.com that teams inquiring about Paul's availability in recent days -- and there have been several after persistent media reports suggesting that Paul will formally request to be traded at a meeting Monday -- were greeted with the same resistance to Paul offers that the Hornets have maintained for months.
"They say they aren't moving him," one rival team executive said of the Hornets.
Sources with knowledge of New Orleans' thinking said over the weekend that the Hornets' stance is unlikely to change, at least in the short term, even if Paul himself tells the Hornets for the first time that he wants out.
New GM Dell Demps and new Coach Monty Williams apparently are going into the meeting on their knees and are going to attempt to get Paul to stay by showing their dedication to building a contending team around him. If all else fails and the Hornets in fact trade him they will not trade him to a team he has "demanded" but to the team that gives the best offer. They will also trade him on their preferred time line, be it before the season starts, in the middle of the season or even after the season ends. You can read the full article Here
After the meeting:
“The meeting went well," wrote Paul in a statement. "It was great to get an opportunity to sit down with Coach Williams, President Weber and our new General Manager Dell Demps. I expressed my desire to win and I like what they said about the direction that they want to take the team. I have been a Hornet my entire career and I hope to represent the city of New Orleans and state of Louisiana for many years to come.”
WTF? This is confusing, if this is true he's a prick. What happened to all the teams he wanted to get traded to?
Truthfully I don't want him here. If getting Paul means Okafor is gonna be in Orange and Blue I'd stick a middle finger to them. I've been going back and forth but I've decided that giving up most of our youth for Paul and Okafor is silly. You get Paul which is nice but then what? You have Okafor's ugly contract and you couldn't even get the devil to take that contract if you offered your soul. We get Paul and still aren't a contender, we'd make it further in the playoffs but what does that stand for besides nothing? We keep our team how it is now, we'll get to the playoffs and eventually lose but we can get better. We get Paul, make it to the playoffs and eventually lose with very little space to get better. Besides, Paul averaged about 5PPG and 5APG more then Felton did last year, Is that worth giving away everything? Felton has a good chance to play even better in our system so have fun in New Orleans Paul, its not you we don't want its Okafor. Wait two years and come, then we can all party!

he realizes that he most likely wont get traded before the season. And doesnt want to create a negative vibe around the team currently.
So…yea.. he’s just saying the right things rright now. Which he should do instead of crying like a whinny baby.
Toney does what the douglas do. And no one can do what he does b/c doing it without being Toney Douglas just doesnt make it do what it do
Im happy as well.
Don’t want him with Okafor’s contract.

It means New Orelans isn't stupid
Paul has no leverage in demanding a trade NOW, with his contract in place for 2 years. So this is New Orleans telling him to just play ball. If he doesn’t it will only reflect bad on him, not the team.
I hope they stick to their guns here.
Adrian Wojnarowski wrote a terrific column on LeBron James’ influence over Chris Paul. It’s quite interesting and if you dismiss it as a bashign of Paul or James, you miss the point. Highly recommended: Paul Bends to King James Rule

its kind of a tough situation,
if a tough situation could exist making millions and playing basketball as you career.
On one hand, you stay “home” (adopted home in CP3’s case). You stay the course as they build around you. If…they build around you.
But on the other hand…you see the Lakers. They built around Kobe…TWICE. Shaq+ others, and now Gasol + others.
Who did Lebron have in Cleveland? Jamison? Who does Chris Paul have in NO? David West?….funny that it seems both are the same numbers grabbing, yet strikingly average “undersized” PF type dude.
There’s a reason why MJ, Kobe..and I guess you can throw Paul Pierce in there, stay with their team. Scottie Pippen’s a HOF. Shaq is a HOFer…Gasol may not be, but he’s an elite big. Ray Allen and KG are HOFers.
You need at least 2 great players, + others.
So on one hand I don’t blame then for feeling the heat to stay and "be like Mike (or Larry, or Magic..etc.).
But on the other hand…..why not be like Kareem?????. Everone mentions MJ, why not Kareem? He went to greener pastures in LA…seemed to do him fine.
No one’s really listening to Lebron here….people are gonna listen to Kevin Garnett, and Lew Alcindor. Stay….but if they ain’t giving you a running mate…and ELITE running mate, get the fuck out when you can. Or else you’ll be holding your dick in mediocrity till your next contract’s up.
Go New York Go!

Kareem won a championship before the Lakers tho
I guess its not considered running away if you do the do beforehand.
I agree with you
I like seeing guys stay with their teams. But if the TEAM isn’t working with you, then you leave… but you don’t try to strong-arm your team like this. Nowo, again, Paul hasn’t personally said anything, so I can’t blame him just yet.
But a guy like KG, who was more than loyal to Minnesota and Pierce as well. I never blamed KG for finally leaving. And I don’t remember him saying “trade me to Boston”. Maybe he did, I just don’t recall.
Pierce went through a lot of losing in Boston too. Karl Malone spent like 20 seasons in Utah before going once in LA for cheap.
I guess my point is, if you sign a contract extension like Paul did, just go with it. He’s makin serious coin. Take the Wade route. He said he would leave if Miami didn’t upgrade the roster. He stuck to it too. But he was also a free agent, not pulling a stunt like this while his contract wasn’t on the line. I mean, I got no problem with guys leaving their teams, but there are better, classier ways of doing it than the impatient way this seems to be going.

Kobe did it.
who knows how serious he was, but Kobe did it with LA. I think it was more after they won with Shaq…but he was gonna leave if they didn’t improve the roster, that whole Bynum for J-Kidd thing.
CP3 has every right to try and get out of this. The Hornets are not nearly even as good as those Lakers teams were either. Maybe he’s just trying to get ownership on notice by doing this.
He really doesn’t have much power other then to try and request a trade, but I don’t blame him for what he’s doing. The owner doesn’t want to spend money. I mean…who wouldn’t want to play with Chris Paul?
Go New York Go!

Agreed! Also,
This ain’t like Lebron who was on a team that finished with 60 wins, had the best record, won back to back MVPs, and had a team willing to try to make moves. Hornets suck and have made not a move to improve in a year that had goo gobs of talented free agents on the market.
"Umm - it was - you know - umm - a good game. You know."-
Patrick Ewing (my Knick Hero)
Counter-argument
He signed a fat extension knowing he’d be missing out on the free agent bonanza (would he have been a free agent this year? maybe next year? I forget). He knew the team was a small market, etc.
On the other hand they had built a DECENT team around him at the time as best I recall, and then in the past couple seasons have picked it apart to save luxury dollars. But even so, he was at best naive for not seeing that coming.
So I don’t feel too bad for him.
what it seems to me is....
that CP3 is gonna stay for the next 2 years, and be a FA in 2 years at best, unless the Hornets are a contender by then.
I don’t think they’re trading him now. At the earliest it’ll be the trade deadline, which could be likely if he’s just a one man show on a mediocre team.
The problem is Okafor, which I’ve read that his “#1 preference” the Magic, don’t want at all. Now, I guess you might take from that “if the Knicks would be inclined to take Okafor, that makes them likely”?? Uh…nope. The Knicks don’t want Okafor any more then the Magic, probably less so given Donnie preaching flexibility.
So I guess its been “fun” to speculate on this, but even more so that I get moist when thinking of Gallo and Randolph’s potential on the Knicks, I’m glad that it seems dead…for now.
Go New York Go!
So am I.
Chris Paul’s name has been in every post for the past 2 weeks and I’m hoping this kills it for good.

Does no one here understand Public Relations?
Chris Paul has no right to be traded. If he publicly demanded a trade, he’d be fined. Whatever displeasure he may have, it will be expressed through back channels and privately to the Hornets higher-ups. That statement, written by the NO PR department, was something he signed off on, of course, but something he had to sign off on, since he has no power in the exchange at all.
What eventually will happen is he’ll tell them that he has no interest in re-signing, so NO will be forced to consider trade offers as his contract nears an ending. They obviously can get more for him with 1.5 years guaranteed than with just half a season, so if Paul tells the NO brass he wants to be traded, they’ll shop him for a huge haul around the trade deadline this year and in the offseason next year.
And anyone here who says they don’t want Chris Paul because of that statement is a fool.
I don't want Chris Paul because
Okafor comes with him and we’d give everything away. That’s the only reason. I wouldn’t have a problem giving away the players we’ve all been mentioning only for Paul but Okafor is a definite dealbreaker.
"As humans we strive for success but live with fear. If success was inevitable, fear cannot exist" Michael Kelley
by MikeTheIntern on Jul 26, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions
And
if we trade for him in the offseason next year, after (perhaps) we’ve signed Carmelo, the Okafor contract doesn’t matter. I’d take him in a heartbeat if it meant getting Paul. This trade isn’t happening overnight, it’s a long term thing. We’re in decent position to get him (it would be better if we had draft picks, but you have to assume a team trading for Paul isn’t going to have a lot of good picks to send, since Paul will instantly make them a better team.
Watch out for Jersey this offseason in the Paul sweepstakes, by the way. They could put together a great package with Harris and what is sure to be another lottery pick this year.
But would the Nets interest Paul? The Hornets can trade him wherever they please but if he puts it out there that a. he will opt out anyhow and b. might even dog it, then that could scare off teams not on his wishlist.

Nets are moving to Brooklyn
Theoretically, in 2012 or 2013. He may be hesitant at first, but I think Prokhorov and Jay-Z can make a formidable pitch. Plus, they have a decent (though I think overrated) nucleus. And there’s plenty of potential to increase Paul’s profile and earnings. Paul will go where the Hornets trade him. If they think the Net haul is better than the Knick haul, then that’s that. And the Nets might take a chance, thinking they can convince him (or that he could push their team into the playoffs if they’re on the cusp during that season.
Not saying he’d scoff but just that right now it’s not on “the list”. New Jersey has some good young players, they wasted cap room by overpaying some free agents but could still add some good pieces. However, if they take Paul and Okafor they probably won’t have a lot of working room. It’s definitely a worse starting position than he’d have w/ other teams on the supposed list.
I agree that the Hornets will do what New Orleans do but like I said, it’s a big risk if Paul lets it be known he isn’t keen on the move and won’t be likely to resign. A team might go ahead anyhow with confidence they can change his mind, like you say, but it could easily scare them off.

sorry if you dont want cp3 but hes still out there
As If...
And y’all (NJ) look like a good spot to land from Ken Berger’s view (and NO’s). The reality is, who wouldn’ t want CP. The truth is, but at what cost. With CP on the Knicks, it’s a case of high reward, but also high risk. We’ve got a who’s who of guys coming off injury (Gallo, Amare, Chandler, Randolph, Azubuike…) and adding CP only adds to that list depending on who goes (in a trade). NO isn’t going to be stupid. They’ll want high value in return which would be 1 or both or more of our brightest prospects including Gallo, Chandler and Randolph. In a nutshell, and what’s been more than covered and abused all over this site is a trade for CP would eat up flexibility, depth and and versatility. Sometimes it’s best to avoid stocking up on high risk players regardless of the high reward, and round out the roster with above average role players who compliment eachother and create mismatches. If we acquired CP, we’d have to eat Oke and Posey (yuck), and while Oke is solid at Center, he’s mostly a defensive player who wouldn’t make up for the scorers we lost. CP would add scoring in that respect, and he and Amare would be a sick combo. But tis is an offense with high demands and guys will have to fly around on defense and get after loose balls because our offense, when not clicking, can create great opportunities for opposing offenses. That is where the alarm gets raised. It’s bad enuff to have the potential of losing Amare, it’s worse with Amare and Paul (who lost his wheels last year chasing loose ball). I don’t think they can take a beating as a 1-2 punch under this system, which is why I’d want to spread the scoring around. Which is why I wouldn’t want to lose Gallo. I want Amare in the post with a defender who can get put back and get after the ball, saving his legs and letting him do what he does best, beastly scoring. That becomes sweeter when teams realize they can’t leave Gallo alone to double team Amare, because he can make them pay from the perimeter, and I think this year hespends a 3rd more time inside the perimeter working his midrange and slashing. Felton is a tank for a little guard, but he’s quick. He doesn’t have to be CP beastly, just efficient and defend well. He’s already a monster upgrade over last year, with the toughness and wheels to burn. We’re young. We stand pat we may not even be super great this year. BUT – we wil be contending for a playoff spot, and 50/50 contending for more. Next year we’ll be sick. I’m personally not in the win it now group. I’m in the dynasty group that knows few players go to new teams and win championships, but championships are built on a team concept that defends as a team, does the little things if their game isn’t on point (individually), builds chemistry and accountability and airs their dirty laundry in the locker-room, not twitter. We’re gonna surprise a lot of teams and people this year. This team has a lot to prove, like yours, and we’d be better off building our young contenders into seasoned champs. We’re alot closer than many people (not on SBN) think.
Yeah man.

Thanks for the update but as far as I go personally, I don’t think it’s worth wading through the retractions and statements and “sources” from this point forward until something substantial happens. Who knows what the deal with this source is although it seems quite believable. What is perhaps unbelievable is that this idiot would leak this. As the ‘source’ says, keeping a happy face will increase NO’s leverage in a trade, thus increasing the likelihood of a trade if behind closed doors they know they must do it. So why would someone associated with him take this to the press? His management is clearly foolish, trying to grab P.R. over sound maneuvering.
This could become a real circus and I am not up for enduring another one. Hope the season comes damn soon.

Exactly why
Who cares what the frick he / they do. I like where we’re at without all the preening and posturing. What a sorry summer this turned out to be in terms of media and marketing. I’ve lost tons of respect for the way so much has been handled and alot of respect for the james company. It’s a “get yours” mentality that seethes with selfishness and greed. I don’t view Paul as this kind of player, he never showed this side before. Until The Lame James marketing company or whatever they call themselves. We’ve seen plenty of this before with the likes of Boozer and others, for sure, but if someone wants to be the face of basketball, why conduct your business without tact or care for the fan bases involved. I’m not looking for anyone to agree with me, it’s just my opinion. I’m hoping for a home grown title born from a lineup nobody thought much of. I’m hoping these guys presently on the Knicks have the pride and chip to be be brash, arrogant and downright ruthless on the court, not off the court. This team is so young it’s hard to say it would be possible this year, and yet, it is very attainable. It doesn’t matter if we believe it. It matters if the team believes it. And I’ll be honest, I actually do believe, if we made the playoffs and were to face Miami, if this team develops as it should, we could beat Miami at their own game. Not because we’re the better team, but because we can wear them down by being the smarter, deeper team. Defend the paint and passing lanes at all cost, attack on offense and draw fouls to take away their paint, and then shoot them outta the house. The Heat will have endured a year of every team wanting to beat up “the team”. They will be pushed, they will win a ton of games, but attack them, and they will break (cue the Mozgov).
Think of it this way. There is nothing other than Kobe on the Lakers that was scary. But as a team they get it. I hate Jackson, more for his Dr. Phil act than being coach Phil, but damn, as a coach, he can get a ragtag of role players to play a cohesive game. Well, surprise, surprise, I see that same quality in MDA. So many naysayers will disagree, but his deficiencies aside, he has a nice ball of clay right now to mold. The only thing to stand in the way is the world famous injury bug. Barring that, if we’re around .500 by midseason, we’re making noise the rest of the way. If we’re better than .500, look out. If we’re around .400, it’s been fun knowing him.
I don’t care about who’s not here. Never have and never will. I like watching other players and other teams, but unless they’re on my team…who the F cares. Until they’re here they not a knick
You had me until the Phil Jackson part...
Sorry I just don’t see it, Phil preaches smart offense and solid defense as opposed to run n gun and no defense. Not to mention that Phil plays his scrubs sometimes and MDA would rather play himself that play the deep bench. Everything else is spot on though. I still see this team as 40-45 wins, 6-8th seed. I think 7th seed. Personally I think we match up pretty well with most of the east except the Heat and Celts, but hey that’s me. We play Chicago we may shock the world. We play Charlotte we may get rocked.
IF this team can truly play hardcore run and gun with no issues, we will be a problem. Add some defensive schemes Pringles! So tough to say what we are until we see this team play. I wish it was November already.
In Donnie we trust.

Paul’s a great player, but if it means losing Gallo and AR and taking on Okafor contact it’s not worth it
