2010-2011 Free Agency: Plan B?

Lets prepare for the future here! Lately we've been pondering with the idea of getting Chris Paul or Rudy Fernandez but lets talk about next year's Free Agency for a bit. We've touched on the possibility of signing Carmelo Anthony if he doesn't extend his contract with the Denver Nuggets and also talked about signing Tony Parker as an alternative Plan A. So what happens if Plan A doesn't pan out? Here's a list of 2010-2011 Unrestricted Free Agents that I felt were worthy enough to be mentioned.

So who would you most like to see if we cant land Carmelo or Parker? What is your Plan B? If you never wanted Carmelo or Parker, whats your Plan A? There is a bunch of nice decent talent on this list. Its extremely deeper then this year's Free Agency. Instead of the focus being all on one or two men, there are role players here that can put certain teams over the hump. This is why striking out in next years Free agency will be a very unlikely thing to do. Men will not be overpaid because there is a deep pool of talent. Now unless the majority of these fellas sign with the teams they are currently on (Which isn't impossible), we are going to see a bunch of new faces in a bunch of new places. Even some of those Restricted guys might find themselves laced in new colors so do not overlook them either. Look what our Plan B gave us this year, Anthony Randolph, Ronny Turiaf, Kelenna Azubuike, Raymond Felton, Amare Stoudemire, Timofey Mozgov and we're still Wheeling and Dealing as we speak! So with the amount of talent up there our Plan B might bring a smile to our face even after be ousted by 2 superstars in consecutive Free Agencies. We have options which is always a good thing.

I guess

I’d want to see how this year’s pieces fit together before I had any ideas as to what the Knicks would need or want from free agency next year. Off the bat though, I’m not really that enamored with any of the names above

by Dutchmarau on Jul 31, 2010 1:11 PM EDT reply actions

I've always liked the idea of Nene

and I think he’d work great here as their starting C. I don’t think he’s a post up C either so he could actually fit perfectly.

If you're a real Yankee fan, please do the rest of us a favor and splurge the extra cash on a replica jersey without a last name on the back. Frankly, it's embarassing.

by J3TSFANFORLYF3 on Jul 31, 2010 1:26 PM EDT reply actions

Honestly

I’ve been thinking the same. Leandro Barbosa or Jason Richardson. Two guys that played in our system. Personally I’d take Richardson just because he is so athletic and adding him to our current athletic team would be great. I like both of these guys though. I think the players from the Suns are gonna seriously consider playing here since Amare and D’antoni is here. D’antoni being here played a huge part in Amare coming. I see the others thinking the same.

You're right.

Completely forgot about him. He’s not to shabby, I’d rather go after a guy like Tyson Chandler and see how it works though. I’d take that chance over Diaw. Not saying I don’t like Diaw but if we had a choice and both wanted to sign, I’d hand Chandler the pen and paper.

True

Diaw, Pietrus, Battier would all be nice fits here. I’d sneak a peak at Redd to see the asking price and if he’s got any game left. Barbosa i dont see happening as long as TD is here.

Pry Tim Duncan away from San Antonio…? Let’s make that happen with a 6 year max deal, lol. Duncan is all about money and fame.

obviously redd isnt getting $11 million next year

potentially viable sg who could be had for very little. doesn’t hurt to take a look. im not saying he’s the 2nd option on offense or anything ridiculous like that, nor are we going to shell out a handicapping fortune for him, but it’s harmless to investigate

but I’m saying, how many surgeries has Redd had in the last 2-3 years? Even if he were to be cheap… do we think we are gettin Michael Redd the all-star pure shooter?

i think going forward

the main piece we will need is a real 5. We have some guys that may work, but like starting pitching in baseball, you cant really have enough mobile big men.

Chandler is intriguing to me. As is Nene.

Also interesting names are Battier, Barbosa, Kirilenko… wow… there are actually a ton of intriguing names on there. Too many to list, as it will just take more time then I want to put into it.

Nice to know we have the cap space to make moves.

I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.

First off, really good post

Well put together, as always Mike.

But none of these names interest me. Maybe Barbosa, Diaw, Murphy or Nene. Nene’s really interesting, but looking at every poster above me, you guys already know that. He’d be a viable option, but we’ll have to wait how our big Russian or Turaif pan out.

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

JR Smith?

Sure he’s kind of a douchebag but the cat can shoot the lights out. Plus he’s younger than Jason Richardson.

Barbossa would for sure be fun running in MDA’s system again; he seems like a pretty good alternative if the Carmelo clusterfuck doesn’t work out in the Knicks favor.

No thanks. I can’t stand watchin that guy play. I mean, I respect his skills completely but I would wager he has a net negative affect on a team. Even otherwise, I’d rather a guy who doesn’t put up huge scoring nights but also doesn’t put up game-killing nights.

I hear what your saying, but he’s only 24. A change of scenery and a different coaching perspective, along with some maturity, could help him be a little more consistent.

I think JR would fit nicely with this team.

Too early to tell before thinking about this and not really in love with the list. Plus there’s a whole year of play and a whole lot that can happen. And to Thelonious Dunk, I swear I can say the same thing about a lot of guys in the NBA. I pass (on JRS) until he proves to at least be consistent…he seems to disappear for long periods, but then, I don’t watch him too much either.

CJ Miles is pretty intriguing

young, athletic, not a bad shooter, solid defender and still plenty of upside. fills a need at the 2 and having been brought up through Jerry Sloan’s system, is probably a pretty good decision maker.

and best part, he won’t command serious money

Nene we should of kept
id take Nene and JR Smith
just focus on getting Melo
if not then id go for Nene along with Amare would be fierce and Randolph Felton Gallo
wow thats sick

but for now im waiting on Brown or Rudy
id like either guy but Brown would be easier to get
and it serves as a trading chip come trade time as well
I think Brown or Rudy would thrive in our up tempo system

by ChiaCrack on Jul 31, 2010 5:04 PM EDT reply actions

Whether this class is really good for us or not sort of depends on the 2010 season, too.

Peja, David West, Jason Kapono, Troy Murphy would work if D’Antoni’s here. If not and you’re going more half-court and defensive, there are guys like Prince, Kirilenko, Kenyon Martin, Battier, Perkins could be nice additions to whoever you keep at the 3 (Chandler? Gallo?). Decisions would have to be made on keeping some guys like Gallo, Wil, Toney and, then, working from there in FA (and keeping some assets to find a shooter – Rip Hamilton?). I wouldn’t say it’s a deeper class this year, but it’s more versatile and beneficial to the Knicks, depending on the situation next year. Cap space is a beautiful thing.

My name's Gus Johnson; I get buckets.

by ThisIsTraps on Jul 31, 2010 5:14 PM EDT reply actions

Id really like Nene and Melo, but if no Melo, then JR.

Nene would compliment STAT nicely, and JR, although he’s a bonehead sometimes, he’s still relatively young and has star potential.

by Crackback on Jul 31, 2010 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

From that list of guys

Give me Kendrick Perkins and CJ Miles; young guys from winning organizations who don’t require a lot of touches on offense to be effective. Perkins is a nice complementary big man to Amar’e with the intensity and toughness we haven’t seen since the days of Charles Oakley. I don’t foresee Barbosa and Diaw reuniting with MDA. Those 2 were very inconsistent during their time in PHX.

Never underestimate the power of a neck brace and wheelchair. In Donnie Walsh I trust!

by Rohpuri on Jul 31, 2010 7:32 PM EDT reply actions

Perkins!

Man… I would love to put him next to Stat… Can you imagine the force? He’s defensive minded as well and we need that in our center. I don’t mind that he gets a lot of techs, i like that about him. I’m wondering how he would play in our system though. If he does nicely, there would be pure ferocity. I want smashmouth basketball, as a Jet fan Rex Ryan has changed my whole perspective on defense and fear. Lets start hurting people and implement that no layup rule. Who’s down?

I'd offer as much as possible for Gasol

not sure how he’d fit cuz hes’ a great post up guy, but he’s probably a lot like his brother in that he can adapt to anything.

He seems like the type of C we thought Eddy Curry would’ve been at the height of his potential, so yea, I’d love to get him.

Probably as realistic as someone like Carmelo anyway, so why not wish for Gasol?

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 31, 2010 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

thats kinda my logic

i bet gasol has the ability to play low post or high post pretty effectively too. so wherever amar’e needs/wants to be, gasol can play the other big guy or maybe even baseline. i bet memphis has a tough time keeping him around. i can imagine a plethora of s&t’s that could most likely get it done.

this is assuming donnie/d’antoni covets a guy like this.

and I don't get the Michigan St stuff....

Zach Randolph and Jason Richardson went to Michigan St…how’d it do for their defense?

well for 1

people need to stop playing my mann jamal crawford n get him back in new york starter or off the bench (especially if we aint got the 2 guard situation handled) then we should get perkins he’s only 24 and he got defense then we ll be good

by profootball on Aug 1, 2010 5:03 AM EDT reply actions

i'd like to see us sign jamal crawford and zack randolph from that list.

or maybe big baby and Mikael Pietrus. Big baby cause i’ve always loved the passion he plays with, plus he’s shown he can come through in big moments. I think he could compliment stoudemire well.

and Pietrus is an outstanding on-ball defender and a pretty good 3pt shooter, two things this team can’t get enough of.

look

shannon brown isnt a bad defender
he is pretty good
you say richardson and randolph right good point
but those players thrive on scoring and using athleticism
shannon brown is more of a up tempo guy that does play defense
tom izzo at michigan state runs a tought team they play hard on the defensive end
ive watched shannon brown and i think he is a good defender that was a key player on 2 championship teams
I think here would be a good fit for him in our system
id also take rudy fernandez but idk if we have what the blazers want in a trade

randolph

was only there for 1 year as well. If he had stayed a little longer… he may be a better all around player.

honestly, i'll take anyone as long as it's not tony parker

If start the 2011 season with Tony Parker on the roster, it’ll mean:

—Melo signed his extension in Denver
—Chris Paul was traded elsewhere
—Raymond Felton shit the bed, big time
—DW overpaid for a max-money PG on the decline, whose career APG numbers are pathetic when you consider who he has played with

If Melo is off the table I would throw as much $ as possible at Al Horford and make Atlanta match it. He’d be a great D’Antoni center playing next to Amar’e… Stat, Horford, Randolph and Gallo could make up one of the elite frontcourts in the NBA. There are no other no-brainers on the list, after Melo and Horford it really depends on who stepped up or didn’t this coming season.

I think it's only Melo

I don’t view this free agency class as a particularly deep one, and there is definitely only one franchise player with Carmelo Anthony.
The only player I really love other than Anthony is Shane Battier, but the only way I would like us to get him is if: 1) we got Anthony; 2) we had to part ways with both Gallo and Randolph in a sign and trade with Denver.

I think Joakim Noah would be worth looking into

more than all of the other restricted free agent big men. Chicago will definitely try to keep him so I’m sure we’d have to offer a lot of money but the guy can run the floor, rebound, block shots, and hustles the way david lee did.

Sure his hair and his jump shot are ugly but he plays with a lot of passion and intensity which is essential for a somewhat skinny 5. He would compliment Amare wonderfully and does not command a lot of touches on offense while still putting in around 10 ppg.

He is definitely a legit center and would give us an extremely intimidating front line assuming we keep randolph (and maybe turiaf)

No doubt about that.

absolutely but

the least we can do to the bulls is jack up the price on him so they have to overpay to keep him…unless they work out an extension midseason which would suck

by Joejerkin on Aug 2, 2010 6:40 PM EDT reply actions

they will

Chicago will be good this year, he will be a major reason why. Unless he isnt, which would mean we dont want him anyway.

Noah aint goin anywhere

by gbaked on Aug 3, 2010 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions

eh, they can keep him

For what he’ll want to be paid I don’t think it’s worth it. Unless he shows this season that he can get a clue on offense, I consider him in the same league as the Okafor/Tyson Chandlers of the league… nice 10/10 guys who play hard D but are paid way more than they’re worth because of their height. I’d much more interested in what our own 7’ string bean can do…

If we don't get the SG situation figured out

I’d love to bring Jamal back. He was my favorite Knick while he was here so I’m biased but he can spread the floor, get to the rim at will (though we all wish he’d do that more often) and is an underrated passer. And before being traded he was putting up great numbers.

I agree we need a legit C so I’d be up for Chandler or Nene. If Kirilenko has a healthy season this year I really hope the Knicks would look at signing him. He’d be our best defender and can score, rebound and pass really well
