July 8th, 2010: The end of the beginning?

Good morning, topcats. It's finally July 8th, which means that by midnight, we might actually be done guessing where the big-name free agents are headed. At 9 PM tonight, after some minutes of pageantry, LeBron James will announce what team he has chosen, and then he will sign with that team. Now, during the time I was asleep and blissfully unaware of free agency, (I dreamed I was a "laddersmith". I crafted ladders for all the townspeople.) shit got crazy. The word now is that LeBron James intends to sign with the Miami Heat, forming a hideous Cerberus with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. It's coming from national sources, but most importantly for us, it started with Alan Hahn. Hahn's just about the best reporter we've got in New York, so we're inclined to trust his every word. And I totally do. At the same time, though, there remains the distinct possibility that we are still being deceived-- not by Hahn, not by his sources, but by their sources. With all the secrecy shrouding this process, isn't it possible that LeBron and his henchmen are planting rumors and watching them grow? I'm not trying to manufacture hope here. I just won't believe anything until LeBron looks into the camera and tells us where he's headed. Shit, even then I probably won't believe him.

Oh, and if he does go to Miami? I don't care if he's ruining the NBA, or if he's a sell-out or a coward or a traitor or a tease or not the champion Kobe or Jordan was. I care about Donnie Walsh building a Knicks team designed to destroy him, his team, and every other team in the NBA. If and when James signs elsewhere, Walsh will have to get creative. It will mean that our summer is just beginning.

The potential sign-and-trade of David Lee to Golden State that's already been thoroughly discussed in these parts wouldn't be a bad start. Guys like Ronny Turiaf and Kelenna Azubuike would be instantly useful (unless Kelenna's still hurt. Is he?), while Anthony Randolph is one of my favorite individuals to ever set foot on a basketball court.

Let's take this one day at a time, though. There will be a press conference to announce the signing of Amar'e Stoudemire at noon today. It will be televised on MSG, and also streaming on the MSG website. I'll be at work, but there will be a thread for anybody who's watching the thing to comment along. For now, relax. Eat a wholesome breakfast. Watch the brook babble. Tonight, this schizophrenic opening act to the Summer of 2010 should end. It'll be okay.

Very well put

with the hahn situation.. i did look twice like.. “is he serious”. But as you said, he could have very well been given some raw info.

At the end of the day tho, all is null n void untill bron speaks tonight.
To note though..ever since that espn conference with wade and bosh..all this shyt has been hitting the fan.. and daymit, i like my fan the way it is. Shyt free.

I wouldnt be surprised that after amare’s interview..although not live on espn, will create the same type of buzz that wades and bosh’s did.

good job there Seth

And I think we will be fine, if anything has come out of this, I believe there is a deeper respect for Donnie and his plans to rebuild the knicks. Like I have been saying since I joined this site, “Don’t worry Donnie got this.”

I want to believe it's all misdirections

With all the indications yesterday that Lebron goes to the Knicks, maybe they wanted to balance the rumors by saying he’s leaning toward Miami, so his ESPN special will be as special as this special player wants it to be.

What if this is all to make NY love lbj?

If i was bron, although its grimey to put all ny fans through this.. but what better way to join ny than a large grand entrance? Suspense, drams, and finally at the end of the night, he chooses ny. He’ll have plenty of ppl on his nuts saying thank you lebron! smh… good idea by him. Id do the same it would shoot is already high status even higher..and give his business a surge entering his future in ny

they would be on his nuts either way. as i said yesterday this about him being a diva and wanting the stage and all the attention. if it wasnt then he would have handled it more like KD handled his business and got his max deal done quietly without the craving on the attention. yes being a ufa made the attention to some extent inevitable but when you see things like him creating a primetime special to announce it and reports that he leaked the bosh/wade news so he could have the stage all to himself that’s about feeding the ego.

I think he's been planning this since he could

Some kids doodle the perfect fort in 2nd grade, he was drawing the perfect press conference. He’s got a diseased mind, is all I can say. Unless he signs with the Knicks.

i agree and was saying as much on antoher thread at the same time you put this up

There was an episode of the office where Michael found out Stanley (one of his office workers) was cheating on his wife. Loving a rumor, he told the whole office, which he then realized (thanks to Jim telling him) was a bad thing to do and was going to ruin Stanley’s marriage. So Micheal started to spread tons of rumors that were not true in order to mask the one true one.

I feel like that is what is happening here. LBJ starts seeing all these people say its chicago, so he puts out a little rumor that it is gonna be Cle. Then everyone says its def Cle, so he puts out a little info that hints NYC. Then everyone screams NY NY NY so he hints that he likes Miami.

I imagine there would be few things more enjoyable to a professional athlete then making sport reporters squirm.

I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.

Nice one, but

Didn’t one of the rumors Michael made up turn out to be true? I think it was that Pam was pregnant.

If he goes to Miami

I hope the Knicks get good enough to the point they can deliver category 5 type destruction to Heat every time we face that team. Deep down, of all the teams, I was worried about the Heat because of that smug piece of crap, Pat Riley. Still holding out hope things change.

I also hope oil creeps around the coast of Florida and

I see all the reports and I believe that they are probably accurate

but for some strange reason I feel a little more confident now that the overnight word has come out that its Miami. If the word was NY, I would feel less confident because I feel like the team that is constantly talked about just may be the team that is the diversion. I really feel like its between NY or Cleveland.

Guys like Stephen A. Smith and Chris Broussard are pumping Miami by saying its the most logical choice and yet no one can answer why LeBron James would come all the way to CT to make this announcement.

by Major on Jul 8, 2010 9:51 AM EDT reply actions

None of this makes any "logical" sense.

1) If the choice is Cleveland, wouldn’t he do this from a boys n girl’s club in either Akron or Cleveland?

2) If he wants to build up suspense, wouldn’t he just do it from ESPN’s studios in Bristol Connecticut?

3) If it’s Miami, why not just go to South Florida and put us all out of our misery?

4) If it’s NYK, why not do it at The Garden?

Really, Greenwich Connecticut?

Greenwich makes most sense if he's joining the Knicks

b/c it doesnt tip his hand, its close to NY, and its not close to either Miami, Bristol or Cleveland.

BUT… there’s no reason he couldnt have changed his mind after he selected the location (say from NY to Miami) no doubt brought on by the fact that the salary cap was unexpectedly larger than expected, allowing Miami to sign 3 max agents.

My doublestuffed oreos fell on the floor of my mom's basement. Save me swagman!

by SomebodyBuyAustinaSteak on Jul 8, 2010 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions

because if he did it from an obvious location there would be no need to watch. if the reports of him flying to miami last night were true, it would be pretty obvious he was going to the heat and espn/lebron television would loose a huuuuge part of the viewer audience. theyre building suspense

by BronxBeliever on Jul 8, 2010 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Greenwich makes sense for the Knicks and LeBron for two reasons

1. He already been to the Garden but not the Knicks training facilities which would be the ideal location to hold a presser right after the ESPN broadcast. They could have the Garden presser on Monday with the city in an absolute frenzy. It would be counterproductive to hold it at the Garden tonight when you can promote a Garden presser over the weekend and have 33rd street literally shut down with fans.

2. He and his family would most likely go house hunting in that area if he signed with the Knicks anyway. Allan Houston, Donnie Walsh and D’antoni all live in the area and would help show LeBron and his family around the town on Friday.

by Nintendo vs Sega on Jul 8, 2010 9:54 AM EDT reply actions

I actually agree.

Going to Miami is basically saying he can’t win on his own and is not even confident to win with one other major player. He’s saying he needs two? Isn’t that going to lessen any championships they win? Maybe they can get Melo and CP3 to sign for the veterens minimum and they can field the US national team….

by Timmaht on Jul 8, 2010 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

DISagree

Does that make KG and Ray Allen cowards for going to Boston to be with Paul Pierce?

Absolutely not. KG is probably one of the toughest SOB’s in the game right now, he plays with more fire than some entire TEAMS play with. He wanted to win, and he wanted to win right then and there. If a championship is truly the only thing on your mind, to hell with whatever people will say about your choices in free agency or perceived cowardice. You go where you can win, bottom line, end of story.

If LeBron thinks he can win on his own, then he will fall back on secondary criteria (and who knows what those are). And don’t for one second think that a championship isn’t his #1 priority.

by psuwxman on Jul 8, 2010 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

??

COMPLETELY different situation..KG and Allen were past their primes without a championship. If Lebron goes to Miami, his legacy will be ruined because we’ll say that he played with two other superstars.

lebron is choosing between cle and nyk….his ego is too big to allow him to go to miami….there arent enough balls on the court (pause)….lebron wants to be the king….if he goes to mia hes a truimvirate that ranks 1. wade (since its his team) then 2. lebron…he wants to be number one nyk is the place to do that….he cant pass up our financial flexibilty…favorable playing style…and 8 million people loving him when he brings us a ring within the next 2 years

If Broni doesn't go to the Kniks...

Why wouldn’t we resign David Lee.? We’ll have enough cap space to sign him and a PG we need (Felton, Rednour). I don’t see Randolph (plus whoever we get along with him for Lee) as a worthy replacement for Lee.

by YIK on Jul 8, 2010 10:11 AM EDT reply actions

Because he plays the same position as Amar'e

Defensively, he’s a liability at the 5 and we need a true 5 to be a contender.

by zlander on Jul 8, 2010 10:22 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

In theoru you're right but, you still need a Center

Amar’e has been reluctant to play Center in the past and D Lee has been ineffective defensively moving from his natural position. So basically you have two power forwards in at once. It may work in NBA 2K10 but not in the real world.

by Timmaht on Jul 8, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Reluctant perhaps,

but not unwilling. I think Amar’e could and would play the 5

by fuhry on Jul 8, 2010 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

In d'antonis system amare or lee can run the 5

The only reason it didn’t work last season, because lee was running the 5 without a legit 4..having two great power forwards in dantonis system us ideal, because you will never be able to find a center that can run the floor like his offense requires

<follow me @theinfamousazad

by zlander on Jul 8, 2010 11:34 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I put some thought into this no legit 5 idea.

My first thought was that a team with a legit 5 could slow the tempo of the game which would hurt us as well as the 5 being dominant down low. Then I remembered the only legit 5 in the East that can really take over a game like that is Dwight Howard. So, I’m gonna pull an ESPN hear an use you as my source to flip on this idea and say it could work. You heard it here first, nevermind my source as their words mean nothing…but what they say is true.

by Timmaht on Jul 8, 2010 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

D'Antoni would probably push for Donnie to sign him

He is an effective passer rebounder and he can step out on the floor and make shots. And if we do not sign Lebron, Pringles is gonna want to play fast, he has pretty much indicated that if he doesn’t make the playoffs this year then he probably won’t be back, and if Pringles is gonna go out, he is gonna go out playing his style. Hell he might even try to turn it into 5 seconds or less.

by Robert Currence on Jul 8, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I woke up to ugly ass chris brousard..

And his ugly ass reports…i hate him, and if lebron goes to miami he joins a team where he won’t be the first option in crunch time (granted they might go 82-0 and never have a close game)…but still a bad career choice for him..and I think we can start calling him lebum

<follow me @theinfamousazad

by zlander on Jul 8, 2010 10:16 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

that’s what he needs because he chokes in crunch time. wade is much better down the stretch and for bosh this is a wet dream because he gets paid like a 1 to be a 3 and has no pressure on him as it’s all on lebron and wade.

by mleetch352 on Jul 8, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Hey listen

The LeBron team has been pulling everyone’s string all along. Isn’t that obvious by now?

Look…. if he’s making that announcement in Greenwich CT…. Dudes, it’s Knicks country up there. Everyone knows where he’s going to be. There are literally going to be Knick fans, and maybe a few Net fans, surrounding the place. If he decides to go to fucking MIAMI of all places, land of Riley and Mourning and Tim Hardaway and all that shit, there’s going to be AT BEST, a very unpleasant situation for him when he leaves that building and AT WORST, a serious security situation. It’s going to look bad. Why would he subject himself to that? Sure, Miami seems like a feasible option, especially with the higher cap figure, but really, I mean seriously, is he that stupid to put himself in a place where he can be surrounded by an angry mob?

Unless the location changes, I’m got to believe he’s signing with NY or NJ.

yeah, but a couple of things

1. people who know Lebron say its normal for him to make last minute decisions so its entirely possible he changed his mind after he picked the location.

2. sources say the location isn’t significant.

3. (and most importantly) reports are Lebron’s people are calling potential free agents to gage their interest in coming to Miami for less money if Lebron signed up. Why would they do that if the rumors to Miami were just subterfuge? That would seriously piss off his fellow players for no reason…

Your point 2

‘Sources’ can say whatever they want to say – the location is significant because it’s known and there are going to be fans there! It’s plenty significant, whether it is to LeBron or not.

Point 3> LeBron’s people are doing the string pulling and have been from the beginning. So why is this suddenly real info? Why wouldn’t he wait to call them until after he makes his announcement? Hm?

by fuhry on Jul 8, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

You are wrong, for starters

Lebron is 25 years old and does not think his shit stinks.
He really doesn’t know what real NY is like, he has been coming here for years and getting nothing but love,
He does not understand that if he announces that he is going to work with Pat the Rat Riley
that he is going to need a police escort to get out of that building. They think they are worldy but all they are is smug and Naive, so I could see him going to Knick country and not picking the Knicks. Because he and his crew are too Naive to realize the tremondous slap in the face it would be to Knick fans, You come to our own front door to piss on us kind of thing. I bet they don’t even know how close they are going to be to the Knicks facility or that virtually everyone in that area is a Knick fan.

I know LeBron is 25

and is probably naive about a lot of things, but about fans and crowds? I would be surprised if he’s that naive about that. I think he’s made the trip from NYC to Greenwich plenty of times. But we’ll see, I guess.

by fuhry on Jul 8, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually I must apologize for saying you were wrong.

But I am trying to say that he probably is not even thinking about what is gonna happen if he announces that he is going to a team other than the knicks, while literally surrounded by Knicks fans. Nothing in his experience has prepared him or his crew to understand that.

For weeks we rip Broussard on his “sources” now sentiments are LeBron is going to Miami, yet it was Broussard who broke this story on ESPN. I want to keep ripping him for his “sources” but then I saw this crap on theknicksblog.com . I just hope he’s throwing out a rumor and seeing how everyone reacts.

The only person at the post who might know what they're talking about

is Vescey… and he’s remained mum on this whole thing. The others are just engaging in BSPN style ‘write something – anything!’ speculation. All they have to do is mention the word ‘source’ and they no longer have to say ‘I think’ before what they think might be true.

Just replace ‘Sources say’ with ‘I think maybe’ and you will get a clearer picture of what’s going on.

The Knicks remain mostly in the dark. Yesterday, team officials repeatedly called James manager Maverick Carter, but got no response.

the most important thing in that piece was the 800,000 the Suns are giving us, it means that if Walker plays well this year, we can keep him and not have to let him walk to clear space for Melo.

you dont have to clear space for melo since lebron isnt coming and curry’s deal goes away. still think melo worries to much about the lockout and takes the 3/65 from denver.

Well we would still probably have to clear a little

Because if Lebron is not coming, Donnie is going to sign at least a couple of guys. and if We re-instate Lee’s bird rights, we can give him max if we have to and still have enough to sign Ridnour and maybe Mike Miller and Earl Barron or another Big guy. So yeah Donnie might need to clear a little room we shall see.

Hey Trolly Troll Troll

obviously your team is going to have alot more enemies with a move like this, as would the Knicks if we pulled this off. It’s basically like the Yankee’s buying a team and the hate that has had. Heck, and you guys did it with a salary cap because the players took less then the max which they would have demanded individually if they were seperated. The moral here though is to take it with a grain of salt an move on as people are just tired from the Bron Bron fiasco. People here are definitely not “classless” and great discussions have taken place in these few days alone. Stop focusing on the negatives and bask in your player monopoly if it happens.

it was LeBron’s circle that leaked the Bosh and Wade to Miami info. Why would they do that, unless to provide justification for him leaving Cleveland to join the Knicks and make it appear as if that was the decent choice?

But you know, it’s damn near impossible to tell what’s going on here. I will tell you one thing for certain… the situation is being manipulated for maximum affect, probably by LeBron’s circle. I think it’s kind of playful though and I think they are laughing at how stupid people are.

if LeBron comes to NY, great. if not, life goes on. what’s important is that the Knicks will field their best team in nearly a decade next year regardless of what James decides to do. sure that’s not saying much, but i’m so hyped up for the Knicks to be competitive again, that i haven’t wasted much time on the LBJ stuff.

there is no worst-case scenario here. at least the Knicks didn’t put up a huge billboard and fly their billionaire Russian owner around the country just to pay $35 million to Travis Outlaw. everybody can just chill tonight.
