Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Line-Ups/Match-Ups

For the first time in years, the Knicks have a very deep, very versatile team. There about 12 players we would all like to see get time but unfortnately that won't happen. However, given all of the depth and versatility on this team, we can discuss what line-ups/match-ups we'd like to see in certain situations.

Star-divide

1.) End of a game, 2 to tie, 3 to win, 10 seconds or less remaining:

PG - Raymond Felton - Last year he did it to us enough times. Ray Ray likes to get into the paint for the floater or lay-up when the ball is put in his hands and seems to excel when the game is on the line. I go with his experience over Douglas.

SG - Roger Mason Jr. - Though he didn't have many last year, RMJ has had his fair share of game-winners in his career, mostly from beyond the arc. He's not afraid of the big moment.

SF - Danilo Gallinari - Gallo hasn't had any true buzzer-beaters or anything but last season Gallo liked to get the ball at the top of the key and throw a little fake to his defender and shoot the 3. Considering he's our best shooter, you gotta have him out there.

PF - Amar'e Stoudemire - I don't know if Amar'e has hit any game-winners in his career but he's a go to scorer and can create his own shot so he's a good player to have on the floor.

C - Anthony Randolph - Likewise, I don't know if AR is clutch but he'd be good to have for a lob, tip-in or offensive rebound.

2.) End of a game, need a stop:

PG - Toney Douglas - He's probably an equally good man-to-man defender as Felton but, Douglas has long arms and loves to poke the ball away, especially if he gets beaten (ala Rajon Rondo).

SG - Kelenna Azubuike - Buike is probably our toughest defender. He's fast and strong and can get steals and block shots

SF - Wilson Chandler - He's often considered overrated, but Ill Will is a good shot-blocker and is super strong and fast. Need I remind you of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRXRGz3SM_E

PF - Anthony Randolph - Randolph is fast and athletic and likewise, a good shot-blocker. His man-to-man defense may be iffy but he's great as a help defender and might even guard some fast point guards like Jeffries used to.

C - Ronny Turiaf - He's a banger and very strong. He's good at defending the pick-and-roll and could also provide some shot-blocking

3.) The fastest possible line-up to run D'Antoni's 7SOL system:

PG - Raymond Felton - He's our best passer and he loves to run. He'd probably be our best orchestrator to find cutters or throw some 'oops

SG - Toney Dougas - The combo we all drool over. Toney is too quick and too good in the transition, particularly finishing at the basket, to leave out of this line-up. He could also possibly hit the transition 3.

SF - Bill Walker - Here's what I'm talking about with the alley-oops. Just throw it up and Billy will get it. He also might be good to hit in the corner for a 3.

PF - Wilson Chandler - Will is our best slasher and a terrific finsher at the hoop. I look for he and Felton to be a deadly combo in a fast break.

C - Anthony Randolph - Another great guy to throw an alley-oops for and the dude loves to jam.

4.) To guard Miami's Big 3:

Buike on Wade - Buike is probably best-suited to guard D-Wade because he's similar in size, and has the strength and quickness to check him.

Chandler on LBJ - This hasn't worked so well in the past but in terms of athletic ability, Will is close to Lebron and is the only Knick who can come close to matching Bron's strength and quickness

Amar'e on Bosh - Both players' defense is suspect so it'd be an offensive show but, it would be cool to settle who's the better PF.

Tell me what your line-ups would be for these situations or any other line-ups you'd like to see in other situations.

um... you forgot STAT on the break

is that not the reason hes ohere over dlee? hes much dedlier in the open court.
also I think his D is goin to improve quite a bit this year. amar’e’s got a huge chip on his the shoulder cuz of all that bad contract talk. he’s out to prove hes worth it and can handle being sole franchise player, at least at this point.

knicks are going to be very fun to watch this year!

I think what you're identifying

is that almost any lineup D’Antoni throws out there is a fast lineup. It’s probably more difficult to cobble together the slowest lineup possible.

PG Andy Rautins
SG Eddy Curry (all day)
SF Ronny Turiaf
PF Timofey Mozgov
C Jerome Jordan

YEAH.

as long as curry and turiaf

switch assignments on the defensive end.

I think your #3 is close

but I think

Felton
Bully
Chandler
AR
Stat

would be a little faster.

Fun to think about

I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.

i like it

i agree

for both offensive and end of game defense posessions.

Hes our 100 dollar man. He needs to be in the game. He also avg’s1+blocks a game. get him in therd i say.

Bigger line-up vs. Miami

How ’bout:

AR on Wade – AR might be long / athletic enough to bother him

Amar’e on Bosh – STAT on offense might get Bosh in foul trouble

Gallo on LBJ – nobody stops LBJ really, so there’s no point giving up Gallo’s offensive skills. And playing Gallo near the arc on offense keeps LBJ from being a disruptive force defensively.

Felton on whoever – huge advantage for the Knicks at PG, unless LBJ gets PT at PG. If LBJ plays PG, we play AR on him and run the offense through Gallo or AR, play Ill Will at the 3 and not have a traditional PG on the floor.

If we can get Wade to play a slightly off game, and play Bosh to a standstill, it’ll come down to LBJ carrying the team on his shoulders again. And we have clear advantages at PG and center, or SF and center if LBJ slides over. Plus we have a FAR superior bench. Miami can be beat.

who's on Miami's bench?

Chandler, Randolph and Douglas are far superior to any of the old farts they’d have on their bench.

I don't know Miami's bench is decent

I expect Joel Anthony to start at C so they have Big Z as their backup with Udonis Haslem, Mike Miller, Eddie House and Carlos Arroyo. That’s pretty solid. However, I agree that they can be beaten. I think putting Gallo at PF might be good to make Bosh move out to the arc and then have Stat at C because he’s much more athletic.

I think Felton and Randolph are keys to beating Miami because Ray is a much better PG and Randolph’s versatility can give them trouble. I think we have a shot at taking one of the games we play against them

joel anthony is garbaggio

yuckgauskas will start, if only because he won’t clog the lane, it will give their gig buns plenty of broom to operate. joel anthony has less range than jared jeffries.

agreed

i’m not looking forward to espn anchors blathering about how joel anthony is the “x-factor” in some playoff series.

by Seth on Aug 15, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

a. You think Randolph is better at defending PF’s than Amar’e? lol..wow the media has created an amazing conspiracy on Amar’e’s defense.

Amar’e runs the court like few other big men. He is THE 7SOL big man.

by BJabs on Aug 14, 2010 11:52 PM EDT reply actions

my “b .” sentence just made itself bold. at least now I know how to make lines bold.

by BJabs on Aug 14, 2010 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

well you've seen him in action more then any of us

and he seems to at least be talking about how he needs to get better at it. So if he’s already decent and now wants to put more effort there, maybe he can be.

I dunno how good Randolph is tho, but either way I think if eventually they’re the Knicks 4 and 5, they’ll be better then any frontcourt the Knicks have had the past 2 seasons defensively.
