KNICKS OFFSEASON GRADE

I was just wondering what my fellow P&T'ers thought about how successfull we were during the offseason since it is coming to a close....obviously we were all a little dissapointed that James took his talents to south beach but that would have been too easy...and good teams are built through patience...intelligence..and luck.  But since the chips have fallen, what grade would u give our club.

Star-divide

Firstly I would like to show you the roster we had at the conclusion of last season (Listed in their primary ideal positions)

PG: Toney Douglas/Chris Duhon/Sergio Rodriguez

SG: Tracy McGrady/Eddie House

SF: Danilo Gallinari/Wilson Chandler/ Bill Walker

PF: Al Harrington/David Lee

C: Earl Barron/Eddy Curry

Lets look and reflect on this roster....we only had 5 or 6 players that i would qualify as productive...on a 12 man roster its no reason why we had a 23-59 record or whatever it was.

Now lets look at the revitalized roster Donnie has provided us loyal knick fans with:

PG: Toney Douglas/Raymond Felton

SG:  Kelenna Azibuike/Roger Mason Jr./Andy Rautins

SF: Danilo Gallinari/Wilson Chandler/Bill Walker/Landry Fields??

PF: Amar'e Stoudemire/Anthony Randolph

C: Ronny Turiaf/Timofey Mosgov/Eddy Curry/Jerome Jordan??

Now this is a roster i feel confident with.  We have a superstar in STAT, a rising star in gallo, the untapped potentials of not only AR but Felton (A Larry Brown offense doesnt suit felton, his potential will be reached in NY), and hopefully some improvement from wilson chandler.  Now finally we have players than can run and shoot...which are two key things that were missing from last years team but is crucial to a pringles offense. We also have a chance to build the comroderie and chemistry of a team.  All the newcomers are saying the right things and seem eager to turn some heads.  They exude confidence and as a fan i am now confident.

P.S.:I have a feeling they will surprise people defensively, but they will get no credit because the knicks will play at a faster pace than most teams (and since when did ESPN or NBATV give the knicks some credit for anything for that matter).

This summer was supposed to be the summer to transform us into contenders overnight.  While this didn't happen, we are drastically improved, and have a clearer direction.  Now we have bonafide advantages on the floor which is something we missed since the houston/spree/camby/JVG days.  I am also quite impressed that donnie wasn't too irresponsible with his funds and we still have flexibility in the future.

Therefore i have to give the knicks a B+.  We arent contenders which is what i was hoping for, however we are a 5-7 seed, we are young with loads of talent with guys that actually feel wanted and that want to play together, and the flexibility to add a major piece. We may not be contenders overnight but metaphorically speaking we will be contenders by the end of the week.

What do you guys think?

Well there was only one way to get the guy everyone wanted on the team

and that was to find someone to take Eddy Curry. Anyone who thinks the “big 2 1/2” had a chance of not being a “big 2 1/2”, and one coming to NY…is fooling themselves.

So Donnie had what Donnie had to work with, and that was pretty much Amare and David Lee’s rights.

-Amare was the #3 FA to me, so he got a top 3 FA.

-Lee’s contract is too long and lucrative, so he traded him for 3 players who actually have the ability to play defense, one of which has immense potential. And of course all are cap friendly

-Regardless of what you think of Ray Felton, he’s a better Charlie Ward at worst. But still has upside since he’s playing now in a system that fits him.

-Donnie pulled a couple of SA Spurs type moves in getting Roger Mason to shoot the pill, and Mozgov, a highly ranked Euro by those who actually follow Euro’s.

-he only had 2nd round picks, and while Landry Fields seems to be a steal and Andy Rautins not…its very early. IF one of them is an actual NBA player, he did great.

The plan was stuck to, and that’s to keep cap space. Unlike 2008 and 2009, he actually tried to make the team better. Whether or not its better on the court, remains to be seen….tho I don’t think there’s any question this team will be an 8 seed at worst.

For right now, I give it an A. The ghost of Isiah Thomas and Scott Layden still bit Donnie in the ass in the form of Eddy Curry, so in doing what he did and not going overboard…I think he did great.

an "A" without a doubt...

not necessarily for the end product (which is young, talented, athletic and gives us flexibility)… but for turning the knicks back into an organization with a future.

the guys who didn’t come (lebron, wade, bosh) weren’t going to come… it wasn’t because of walsh… they just wanted the warm weather and to cup each others’ balls in south beach

the offseason couldn’t have gone any better… short contracts, young guys with a lot to prove, guys who wanted the heat of NY, defense, offense, shooting, slashing, blocking, character, fire, rebounding and a marquee name.

“A” for walsh… but we gotta see what grade d’antoni gets during the season with the troops he was given

As much as I love the optimism around here

I gotta go with just a B. It’s awesome how flexible we are for the future and young, athletic and versatile. However, after two seasons of tanking it, we didn’t get a team that’s going to blow people out of the water. I also think we’re still kind of weak at the Center position. Turiaf is good for now but he wouldn’t start on most teams and I expect Mozgov will get limited minutes and not be uge factor except for coming off the bench every so often.

I’m not trying to be a downer because I think we’ve got sort of an underdog team and I really think we’ll sneak in the playoffs as the 7th seed. I’m glad we didnt just jump into contender status because I like the idea of building a team better. I’m very happy with the offseason, I just cant get it an A

A-

for what we accomplished in a short period of time after “The Decision” I think they did great
I love STAT, made a great great trade with GS, got a good player in Fields, signed a good PG in Felton, and signed some key players
curious you dont have Felton starting up there but TD starting hmm
TD and Felton at the same time I wanna see that honestly

by ChiaCrack on Aug 15, 2010 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

it wasnt

the starting 5…i noticed after i posted that thats how it would look…but i was just listing the players..but felton definately gets the nod in the season opener

I think the Knicks did a pretty good job

I took a different approach to evaluating the offseason. I’ve gone through and ranked all NBA players who played more than 500 minutes last year based on five different statistical evaluations. Then I compared the rankings of the top players on last season’s depth charts to the rankings of the top players on this season’s depth chart.

The result is a jump in record by 11 wins with the biggest upgrades at point guard and power forward. You can check it out here – http://3behindthearc.blogspot.com/2010/08/new-york-knicks-better-or-worse.html.

A

I think it’s now obvious that 3 (needless to name) FA planned to go to Miami all along, meaning the Knicks had no shot.

Given that, I think the Don made great moves. He robbed the Warriors, got the best available pg cheap, and signed Amar’e, while keeping cap flexibility.

Basically

Walsh replaced David Lee with Amare, Randolph, Turiaf and Azibuike. He then replaced Duhon with Felton. Aside from Amare, all the contracts he acquired are low risk, high reward players giving the Knicks a young team full of potential and flexibility. Gotta give him an A.

B+ or A-

Signed Amare, made a pretty good trade for DLee, signed Felton and some role players and had a good draft.

i would love to say A

but getting LBJ and Amare was the goal. I love AR and bookie… but they are no James.

Gotta say a B+ for making the best out of your backup plan. Felton may end up being the best FA on a new team after LBJ and A’mare and the Lee trade has the potential to be one of the greatest steals in NBA history… but that is getting ahead of ourselves.

I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.
