Eddy Curry Status
Curry's 11 million expiring contract has value only if he shows up healthy and in NBA condition.(very unlikely)
Otherwise, how do we unload him? We can't swap him for another bum with a similiar fat contract. If it were a package, we would have to offer some incentive like Tony Douglas, Chandler etc. . What do we get in exchange?Certainly, not a quality player. We would simply get rid of a bad one year contract and lose a good player. Is it better to free up the 11 million in January than to wait until June? I think Eddy will remain with the Knicks for the full year unless Donnie can pull off a minor miracle.

I agree, we're stuck with him
and with Jerome Jordan deciding to go to Serbia, maybe there is something we don’t know about Curry’s condition and expected minutes. I can’t believe I just said that but I did.
If you're a real Yankee fan, please do the rest of us a favor and splurge the extra cash on a replica jersey without a last name on the back. Frankly, it's embarassing.

His contract still has value in a trade.
For example, if we are looking to trade for, hmm, just to pull a random example of thin air… Carmelo Antony. The Nuggs will want good young prospects, yes, but they’re also not going to want to take a cap hit next year and take on a ton of new salary commitments in Carmelo’s place. And voila, Eddy Curry, a big fat placeholder to make the contracts equal out (I think his deal balloons to 16mil with his trade kicker, could be wrong) and let Denver preserve their cap flexibility while still getting back one or two good, young, cheap players.
Or, if Melo is definitively off the table and Knicks start looking elsewhere, Eddy would have to be a big piece of picking up a quality player with an expensive long-term deal from another team looking for salary relief. At the deadline we could package him for someone like Andre Iguoudala maybe, or OJ Mayo, hopefully not but possibly Monta Ellis…
Neither of those scenarios depend on him playing well, or even at all. He has less value than a Troy Murphy, who is also expiring and can actually play, but he does have value nonetheless. I’d think Curry would have to come to camp looking like Dwight Howard in order to have a prayer of seeing meaningful minutes this year.
I think he's been mostly written off for this year
D’Antoni originally said he’ll most certainly play a part this season but when he didn’t show up in Vegas and then all of arrest warrants were issued, I think it really got Donnie and Mike angry.
At this point I’d rather keep him on the team to free us up for some salary space next summer. Plus, if there were injuries to like Turiaf or Randolph, he may get some minutes to help out Mozgov and Amar’e.
curry's only value is his contract
everytime he steps on the floor he gets hurt…remember the past 2 years he has always been ‘getting in game shape’ but he goes thru a drill and pulls a hamstring
he will be anchored on the bench in street clothes
I a 5’11 weed and ciggarette smoker would provide the knicks more contributions at center than eddy curry

and
i could probably outrun him on my hands even if i gave him a 15 second head start

Curry can definitely make his way on the court.
Turiaf and Mozgov are most likely our one, two punch at center. If one of them doesn’t play to expectations (Most likely Mozgov) Curry can get some minutes. Unless we have absolutely no faith in him and can get Amare to play some minutes there or AR.
Point is, there are possibilities that Curry gets put in and does his thing. If he’s healthy he can be serviceable. We can show him off to other teams that may possibly want him for more then just his expiring. If not, just let his expiring come off the books with us.

agreed
early on in the season, im sure we’ll see a platoon of Randolph, Amare, Turiaf, and a little Mozgov at C. At this point, Curry is valuable whether he’s playing or not, so might as well see if he can produce to increase that value. Dude is a legit center when healthy, albeit with subpar rebounding, assists, D, energy… but a Space Eater!
Long story short, teams packing it in to defend him and Amare would be butchered by sweet shooting lineups. Say TD, Mason, Walker at the 123 for example.
If D’Antoni’s not drooling over the possible combinations of guys he can run with, then he’s not the coach we thought he was.

I dont think we're stuck by any means
His only value is 11-12M. IF he makes the court and produces..then thats just icing on the cake..with teams looking to make move that are in cap shit, 11M is great.
And if nobody wants him(which i doubt) I’ll glady accept that weight dropping from our roster.
Its a win win
"they try to do what he do, and been where he's been, but they get folded in two.....he's the dude"
Curry's ONLY value is his contract
Teams don’t care if he can play or not. The point is by obtaining him, you clear capspace for next summer.
The only reason he would get in shape to play is to prove he can still play and sign another contract once his expires.
Again, you aren’t trading for Eddy Curry. You are trading for a piece of paper that expires June 30th, 2011 and allows you to instantly trim $11 or $16Mil from your payroll.

There is something wrong here
An acquiring team (team X) trades for Curry and now adds 11M to the payroll. In June team X reduces its payroll by 11 M. What’s the point? Team X has to get a quality player in return, and it has to avoid the salary cap problem by adding 11 M .
Because...
Team X would only be paying that $11M THIS year and not in future years. Therefore, they might be interested in trading a player (or players) that they’re stuck paying for additional years after this year…… therefore giving them more flexibility with more cap space to sign other players next summer.
Non-contending teams might do this in order to rebuild earlier than they might otherwise be able to. If they have a player signed for three more years that may not be in their future plans, they can ship him off for an expiring contract like Curry’s in order to start fresh.
Look at what the Knicks did with ZBo and Crawford.
The ateam acquiring Curry simply has to give back $11M or $16M of salaried players.
Those players traded likely wouldn’t have expiring deals so it doesn’t increase Denver’s payroll it simply keeps it the same, while once the season finishes, they suddenly have that $11M off the books for the following season. The team that acquired the other salaried players keeps their payroll the same too, but now their payroll doesn’t decrease for the next season.
Make more sense now?

I understand but the execution is not simple
There are several possibilities. The Knicks trade Curry to team X, Team X insists on a quality player in return (Chandler). Team X has to unload some more players to get under the cap. How do they do that?
Under your scenario, team X acquires Eddy and gives the Knicks 2 players whose salary totals 11M for 2 years. Why? The Knicks need that money freed up to sign free agents.
I still say that Eddy stays the whole year.
The Knicks could decide to move Eddy in favor of getting a good player cheaply.
If we are somehow in a contending position for the playoffs.. like a high seed.. maybe we look to move Eddy to pick up a productive player who can potentially help push NY deeper into the playoffs.
I probably agree that there is a very good chance Eddy remains with NY so we can utilize his cap hold ourselves, unless we can get a very good player for him.

for example
the hornets are in cap hell. they can trade for currys 11M(expiring) and give back to theknicks a quality player(s) (who arent expiring) The knicks dont mind..b/c we arent looking for expiring contracts anymore, we’re looking for the opposite, talent.

I think this would only happen if the free agent we want is traded and resigns elsewhere, and the 2 players we’d get back from team X are ones we really like. It’s not likely, but Eddy’s contract gives us the flexibility to do that. Next year’s FA class is kind of meh after Melo.
Without the Algebreic expressions... we're stuck with Curry
unless we include him with one of our better players to acquire a great player we really want. Melo is one of the few real possibilities. CP3 is another if we were willing to package Curry with Felton at the mid season trade deadline. There are very few dudes I’d want to trade for, more than keeping the flexibility for FA’s next year. The trading teams criteria would be agreeing to a fire sale….they’d have to have just given up on the team or a team star and are ready to blow up the roster. Highly unlikely, which is why I believe if one of these situations does arise, we need to jump on it.

call me crazy, but
Eddy Curry, when healthy, is the best center on our roster. If he indeed comes back in NBA shape, he’s better than Ronny Turiaf and Mozgov, who are probably both career back-ups. If I’m Eddy Curry, I’m looking at this whole thing like “Kwame Brown keeps getting work, there has got to be some hope for me. I’m actually talented, so let me show it.” The thing about Eddy is that he can score, and a team like Denver (or Atlanta for that matter) has no low post, back-to-the-basket offense, but great front-court rebounding and defense. The way I see it, if Eddy comes back and puts up 10 points a game, it makes packaging Eddy with Gallo/Will/Randolph a lot easier since he would actually fill a need in Denver. I’m hoping that this year Eddy can get his act together and actually get consistent minutes, because the guy can play. I do realize that the chance of Curry being anything more than an expiring contract who takes up 2 seats on the end of the bench are slim, but he’s still a Knick. I just hope he comes back in shape, because Amar’e wants to play next to a 5, and Eddy Curry can outplay both Turiaf and Mozgov.
I really want to agree
cuz Eddy back in that one year..seems like forever, was excellent. Couldn’t rebound or defend for shit, but he was a monster in the post.
Needless to say, taht was waaay too long and too much ahs happened to Eddy to think he’ll ever revert to that form.
I almost thought he was gonna last year when he looked like an overgrown Plaxico Burress on the court, but of course he shot himself again.
Hoping Eddy will get his act together is like not accepting a job offer cuz you played the lotto hoping to win.

Nah, you're crazy
I think Mike D’Antoni would rather rip the mustache off his own face than run his offense through Eddy Curry. Yeah, Eddy Curry can could give you a reliable 18-20 ppg. But, the way that he did it is anathema to a run-and-gun offense. Waiting for Eddy to get up the floor and establish position, give him the rock, watch him pound it into the floor for 8 seconds and then toss up a soft baby hook… No. Not happening. It have worked once upon a time, for a different team or a different style of Knicks team. But if you can’t run, can’t or won’t pass, and can’t hit a shot outside arm’s length from the basket, Pringles is not interested. To say nothing of the fact that his defense and rebounding are pathetic and always were.
To be honest I don’t think Eddy Curry is ever going to play meaningful minutes in the NBA again, for the Knicks or anyone else. I’ve stopped resenting him and just feel bad for him (well sort of… his salary is grand larceny but that’s Isiah’s fault). Dude clearly has mental health problems, and sucking bigtime in New York has made it worse. He’s made mistakes on his own, but he didn’t ask to get tied up and robbed at gunpoint, or have his ex-gf and baby daughter murdered, shit like that. That doesn’t get less traumatizing just because you’re an enormous millionaire man-child, in fact probably worse because all the while the NYC media is turning your name into a synonym for “worthless” because you’re so overpaid and sucking so bad at basketball. On top of unhealthy you have to think Eddy Curry is pretty fucking clinically depressed. A summer of dodging arrest warrants for not paying settlement money in a statutory rape case is not a good predictor of a comeback season either.
Basically I think 10 points a game is not happening. For his own sake I hope he gets traded soon or Marburied and can just gtfo of New York as possible.
