Idea to Acquire Melo...

Maybe I'm crazy (I've been called worst) but I think this deal would possibly get Melo to the Knicks (and it checks out via ESPN's Trade Machine in regards to salary exchange):

NY Knicks acquire:  Carmelo Anthony (SF) and Arron Afflalo (SG)

Atlanta Hawks acquire: J.R. Smith (SG) and Ronny Turiaf (C)

Denver Nuggests acquire: Jamal Crawford (SG), Wilson Chandler (SF), Bill Walker (SG), Eddy Curry (C) and NY Knicks' 1st Round Pick in 2014.  Chandler could be replaced with Gallinari, but with Crawford (and Harrington) onboard Gallo won't get enough shots and too many perimeter players on the floor simultaneously for Denver.

Why it works:  Atlanta replaces Crawford (seeking a trade) with Smith and land Turiaf after striking out all summer on trying to find an adequate backup Center for Horford.

Denver solves both problems (ridding themselves of Smith and moving Anthony for value).  Crawford will take the shots Anthony leaves behind, while Walker and Chandler will fill the supporting roles vacated by Smith and Afflalo.  Curry basically serves the purpose of a salary exchange, but his good friend Crawford may actually help inspire him to make an eventual return to the floor.  Not to mention a future 1st round pick from Knicks.

New York obviously gets their guy in Anthony, but Afflalo would play defensive specialist in the starting rotation as a SG who doesn't require many shots... yet is very accurate from beyond the arc (perfect for D'Antoni system).

Okay... now the rest of you can tear me apart for my insanity!  :)

Knicks would then be able to bring back Barron © to fill one of the two open roster spots, after trading 4 bodies (including 2 Centers) for 2 in this deal.

well...

anything that requires us to get rid of draft picks that far in advance for a star sticks of Isiah to me… and I don’t like the sound of getting rid of Turiaf as well as all that… but I guess it could work… I just want the damn season to start already lol

I'd do this trade no problem

but the problem is the other teams would hang up the phone.

This deal sucks for Denver

Unless they are planning to rebuild around Jamal Crawford, which… no. Otherwise it’s basically just a bunch of expiring contracts and they will see no return past next season.

denver

is starting to realize that they might have to take whatever they could get…..they dont want to get lebron’d but they know they will not get a franchise peice with the teams that are in the running because they know the situation and they are lowballing the nugs….they may feel the pressure to just dump melo…smith…martin…and billups and just start over….and truthfully that seems like the best and most likely option…

Turiaf

is a pretty important piece for us as a good pick and roll defender at the center position. Barron looked pretty good last year but I think he’s probably a downgrade from Turiaf – this trade leaves us a little thin in the middle.

I LIKE

Turiaf will be a big lost but not giving up our top 2 young guys in AR and Gallo, I take that any day. Plus Aaron A. is a perfect fit, plus it takes off pressure from Melo to guard the best players on the opposite team. We can throw AA and felton on them. I like!!!

this is a very well thought out trade

seems like all 3 teams are open to moving the pieces you mentioned, but im sure denver can get more than this package for melo

Those are 2 big expiring contracts Denver would get.

Word around is that the Hawks are going to offer Crawford an extension sometime next week though. If he extends his chances of being traded drop tremendously.

I think Denver might not be crazy about it

but it looks like a decent offer and it would solve several problems all three teams have at one time. I really think our only competition in terms of preventing a deal to the Knicks is NJ. I imagine it would depend on how attractive a pckg of Troy Murphy and Terrance Williams look to the Nuggets. It’s a better offer than Curry and Gallo and they would still have Lopez.

But Lopez is not Amare so it really boils down to how much he really even wants to play for us, which we can conclude a great deal from abundant amounts of wild speculation but in the end it is just that speculation. He might be content playing with Lopez a very good but less talented big man than Amare in exchange for his max offer from Denver or he could have his heart set on the Knicks and stick to his guns until the Nuggets are forced to deal with us and add us to that list of teams they’ll do business with.

The longer it plays out, the better it is for us because once the trade deadline approaches the nuggets may lose the ability to get anything if he walks.

I could very well be wrong

But I think the fact that people are talking about NJN, LAC, Minny, the Kings etc. is a good sign for the Knicks.

None of the places are teams that a bona fide superstar wants anything to do with. If Melo had been willing to re-up at any of those places, we wouldn’t be speculating, the deal would be done already. The fact that all we have to go on is rumors originating from Denver management means that Melo gave them the list of acceptable teams, it was really short, they didn’t like it, they’re pissed and now they’re just throwing names out there to see if anything sticks. Eventually, if they really want to move him, they’re going to have to calm down and circle back to the short list of teams that Melo has told them he’ll resign with. I am quite sure that includes the Knicks.

I think ur right

plus the more time the nuggs spend entertaining offers from teams he will not even remotely be interested in, the more time we have to showcase our talent, increase our options and force their hand.

the only chance of a deal like this happening

will be if melo is still not traded by the deadline
and tells all teams he will only extend with the knicks
therefore nobody will trade for a rental player
and crawford still didnt get an offer for an extension
then denver will become desperate and not wanting to lost out completely do this trade
although melo jr smith and afflalo are way to much to give up for what they get in return

by noonyp6 on Aug 29, 2010 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

if it comes to that point, and they're bitter enough

they might just hold on to Melo and make him sit on the $65mm he’s turning down. Unless the atmosphere is really that toxic. Replacing Melo, Affalo and Smith for half a season with Jamal, WC, Walker and Eddy (I don’t see them giving Jamal his extension and the rest of those guys are likely as good as gone too, maybe not Chandler if he really performs) is just such a bummer.

I have a novel idea,

Why not wait until Anthony is a free agent and then acquire him for some money? I know it does not feel as good as trading half a team for a guy but hey what do I know.

by Robert Currence on Aug 30, 2010 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

Great idea Currence

I can’t believe nobody has mentioned that…

lol

ur the best Currence…I can call you Currence right? but yea I really gots no problem with that route either.

I’m actually good with any option that doesn’t involve handing out picks like pedophiles hand out candy and/or offering up our best players when the nuggets still have no real plan and haven’t even begun to narrow down legitimate offers yet.

I actually don't think this idea is that crazy

But a few things….

a.) Barron may not be around by then
b.) Denver would want more. Probably give them Buike. And they’d want more from ATL too, though I don’t know who

another melo trade

Knicks get:

Carmelo Anthony, Antonio Mcdyess

Nuggets get:

Toney Douglas, Tony Parker, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler

Spurs Get: Chauncey Billups, JR Smith, Eddy Curry
