Sports Guy on Dolan
I generally like it when the Sports Guy talks about Baseball and basketball (As long as its not only about the Celtics/RedSox).
I know he hates NYC and generally has a piss poor attitude twords our fav team... But this was a spot on, shake your head kinda article.

Chewed-On Theory No. 4: "What's wrong with James Dolan?"
When the news broke that Isiah Thomas might be rehired as a Knicks consultant, a New York buddy sent me the following e-mail: "Serious question: Do you think there is something wrong with Dolan? What if it turns out he is mentally ill? Or what if doctors diagnosed a significant social disorder? Do you think Stern would give us our 2012 No. 1 pick back?"
much much more at link. Its not all about IT. Thats just the start.

Dolan is a lunatic
But if League commissioners started giving back draft picks because the owner is crazy, then the Raiders would have like 100 picks in the next draft!

I read this a few days ago....its great
I love the Luca/Godfather reference about Dolan at the Lebron meeting. That is exactly how I pictured it too. Embarrassing yet hilarious.
If you're a real Yankee fan, please do the rest of us a favor and splurge the extra cash on a replica jersey without a last name on the back. Frankly, it's embarassing.

Now look what you did
You’re responsible for increasing Simmons’ readership by +1, gbaked. I hope you can live with yourself.
I actually like Simmons.
He’s a funny dude, and a lot of his pop references ring true.

sorry bout that
I dont think its gonna make a difference. Dude has a set spot on the front page of ESPN.com.
He actually is funny IMO. It is just annoying that he is so anti NYC. Gotta give him some props for going to the Clippers and not the Lakers when he moved to LA.
I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.
I read Simmons while I poop.
Seems fitting.

Having met Mr. Dolan a few times
I can say he’s actually a pretty smart dude. Slightly self-unaware, but let’s remember, he’s maintained a multi-billion dollar company’s revenue for his time overseeing it, so he can’t be a total disaster. It’s also important to remember Dolan’s past history. He has had extensive alcohol and drug problems, and has forever had to live in his father’s shadow. The guy may have some social issues, but he’s certainly not insane or stupid. He has put in place a solid foundation of management, and while the Isiah thing is bizarre, his recent decisions have been, for the most part, successful

Or
You could say the Knicks and Rangers are beloved New York institutions and are as close to turnkey as billion dollar businesses get. His next inspired decision will be his first. The solid management foundation on the Knicks side wasn’t his idea, and on the Rangers side, it only exists because he hasn’t bothered to replace the guy who, over ten years, has missed the playoffs more than he’s made it and hasn’t built a team that could get past the 2nd round. The description of Dolan’s performance during the LeBron recruitment says everything you need to know about the guy.

That's not really all that fair
Scott O’Neil was brought in under Dolan’s direction to head sports operations, which has completely revitalized the division. What’s more, having seen the free agency proposal, I can assure you that a. Dolan didn’t play all that big a role in it (his biggest contribution were the two videos that were shown to all free agents), and b. the presentation itself was actually quite impressive. I think, sir, that on many of these issues, you are speaking out of turn, and basing your opinion of the man upon the rumors that percolate throughout the media

are you actually
Jimmy Dolan? That would be crazy.

Wow. A serious turn in the comments.
And I like it. Would it be bad for you to tell us what exactly was impressive about the proposal since it relevancy has basically passed? Questioning his intelligence and business acumen might not be entirely fair, but from an outsider’s POV he’s not done much to change it. Part of that may be his reclusiveness, part of it may be his ultimate self-confidence in following his own lead, and part of it may be that he actually goes on tour with his band(???).
Those social issues you talked about are what largely contributes to some of the bafflingly head-strong decisions he makes both in regards to the teams he owns and the business he runs, but he obviously wants this team to succeed. I just don’t want to have to wait til he gets as old and infirm as Steinbrenner before he acquiesces to his basketball people and not whatever personal friends(improbably Isiah) is whispering in his ear while attached remora-like to his hip in the Hamptons.
I'd be happy to explain the proposal
However, I am going to summarize it, rather than possibly divulge too much. It was largely centered upon coach d’antoni, who spent about an hour with each free agent in a behind closed doors meeting. He presented each fa with his philosophy, as well as an in depth look at how that players’ stats would be affected. To begin the meeting, two videos were shown, with an emphasis upon knicks/new york pride, and explaining the young core we have. Mr. Dolan sat with the guys a bit, but to be honest, the notion that this was similar to the 5 families meeting is comical, and swayed by anti-ny bias. The masterminds behind the proposal were Scott Oneil and Donnie. Jim did not have that much to do with it.
Before I began working with the Knicks, I shared the general opinion of Dolan. But he is beginning to get it. He has one of the best minds in basketball in the front office, and has given much control to Coach D’antoni. He’s not a perfect owner, but he’s not a fool either

"Completely revitalized the division"
Thanks for the corporate-speak, fella. Knick fans have a shred of hope exclusively due to the decisions of Donnie Walsh and their effects. Ranger fans know that their team will not be competing for a title yet again this year, and that is exclusively due to the decisions of Glen Sather, and their effects.
Dolan, or Jim as you call him, isn’t Michael Heisley or Donald Sterling and that’s the best thing anyone can say about him.
I believe that Dolan is a joke as a sports team owner
However he is not worse than 85% of the people owning sports teams, picking on him is not even exciting because it is so easy to do. I mean really when have you ever heard Dolan speak for more than five minutes and have him not say something that screams “this guy is nuts.” However he is not going anywhere, and as long as he continues to hire Good basketball people to actually runs the club, I don’t mind him that much.

I believe that Dolan is a joke as a sports team owner
but he is a bigger joke as a jazz musician. I also believe that Mets2 is a fraud, an imposter. Dolan wouls never permit an employee to post on this forum, where he is universally despised.
Eh, I'm not going to agree with that, even though i share some sentiment
As much as my perception of Dolan is very negative, I certainly wouldn’t assume to know the whole story.
The guy isn’t an evil man by any means, but certainly he is a businessman and much of that is done behind the scenes and doesn’t get reported. I would say the same abotu Donald Sterling too.
But Mets2k9 presented himself just fine and his assessment seems very plausible so I am little issue believing what was said.
And while not at all a comparison, plenty of people disliked George Steinbrenner and his ways. But it surprises people a great deal to hear about the numerous stories in which Steinbrenner went far out of his way to do something extremely caring and generous to some of the very same people he had previously bashed.
In any case though, maybe in the future the PR side of Mr. Dolan will improve :-)

In Steinbrenner's case it took him being suspended for two years
during which time actual baseball people ran the club, and built a pretty good product. What I give Steinbrenner credit for is when he came back he had the sense to tone down his act, let the baseball people run the show and just sign the checks. When he calmed his act down more and the Yankees started having success he went from being a buffoon to a great owner. Dolan’s problem is just when it appears he could rehabilitate his image he does something unwise like try to rehire Isaiah. The Knicks had a pretty good off season and may even have the makings of a competitive team, which would go a long way to changing the perception of Dolan in this town. To be honest, I think David Stern put the brakes on that deal not because Isaiah is a college coach, because something tells me if Dolan wanted to hire say Jim Boeheim as a consultant the deal would have gone through, I think Stern was trying to save Dolan from himself with that move.

How did you get that job?
I’m a junior now, I’d love to intern there this summer.
Donnie's bout to beat the NBA game like he got a cheat code
has it made you more of a fan of the Knicks or less?
Not to grill or anything, but you know, not many people get to see some of the inner workings of a team. We just see the finished products much of the time.
My only disappointment is that I’m guessing you are a Mets fan…. and I’d rather the name says Yankees2K9. But… I can look past it since it doesn’t say Red Sawx2K9… lol

Haha, I'll answer both
And I’m fine with the questions. I started off on SB Nation on a minor league baseball site. Once I was banned by the douche of a mod there for essentially not agreeing with him, I figured it was time to take my talents to P&T. I’m still warming up here. I’d say I’m a bigger Knicks fan now than anything. Working there was tough sometimes. I was chided a few times by the higher ups for being TOO big of a fan, which was difficult for me (maybe it was having a twitter feed constantly up every day during the Lebron saga, haha). But it’s an amazing opportunity. It made me realize how complex an organism a professional franchise is, and how every piece is intricately important. Also, I got to shoot hoops on the Garden court, which was about the coolest thing ever, so I can’t complain. Also, I got a few inside connects there, so I have my Chris Broussardesque sources.
Kupe, in regard to your question, I should probably direct you to this link:
http://www.iona.edu/studentlife/career/docs/MSGGeneralinternshipInfo.pdf
That should explain it for the most part. My recommendations are to show that you’re a go getter who can handle the responsibilities of a full time job as an intern (which is what the job tends to become, as you’re treated as an employee for the most part). I’d be happy to answer any other questions you guys, or anyone, has about the process/job/team!

Interesting persepctive, man.
Glad it made you a bigger fan too. I know every organization runs differently and not all are run well.
I still very much dislike James Dolan (hah the orig subjectof this thread), but I don’t let that dislike cloud the fact that not everything he does is terribly wrong.
I do look forward to hearing your perspective in other threads too. And I dunno if you have any athletic medical experience, but these NY Mets sure could use some new trainers and team doctors, lol.
