NBA Knicks' Summer Report Card
With training camp right around the corner, the time has finally come to make final decisions on off season grades. Which teams are big winners, who are the big losers? Some teams came out of the fray "shutout" while others hit the jackpot with max cats or valuable pieces capable of putting a team in title contention. NBA.com released summer report cards for each team grading different categories of improvement. John Schuhmann was left with the task to grade our ultra cool Knicks and this is what he had to say. Afterward is a chart where I give grades and opinions of my own. I'll try not to be overly optimistic this time around.

The Knicks overpaid to get him, but Amar'e Stoudemire is the best player they've had in a long time. Anthony Randolph gets a second chance to make a first impression. |
A |
||
Raymond Felton isn't the ideal point guard for Mike D'Antoni's system, but talent-wise, he's a big upgrade over what the Knicks have had the last two years. |
B |
||
Does this team even care about defense? If so, Ronny Turiaf and Kelenna Azubuike should help, but they're still lacking on that end. |
D |
||
The Knicks won't have the most talented bench, but they will have more players that D'Antoni can trust than they've had in the past. |
C |
||
The Knicks didn't get their top free agent target, but the grace period for D'Antoni is officially over. It's on him to make this team a winner. |

OVERALL GRADE B
Summary
The Knicks shot for the moon in free agency. They missed, but they did nab a star. The process of turning this perennial loser into an Eastern Conference contender is far from over, but in addition to finding a centerpiece in Stoudemire, the Knicks retained the flexibility (something they haven't had in ages) to add more pieces down the road.
With almost an entirely new roster and with only a couple of players who have won anything in the NBA, it will still be a challenge to develop a winning atmosphere in the locker room. Talent alone does not get you anything in this league. And it will be up to D'Antoni to get the Knicks to play hard, play together, and maybe play a little defense.
While they wait on another star, the Knicks must start building a foundation. The two-year waiting game is over and it's time to finally start moving forward.

Mix and match with Amar'e Stoudmire, Anthony Randolph, Ronny Turiaf, Danilo Gallinari and Timofey Mozgov to make a huge dominating presence. We are very big. |
A |
||
Raymond Felton is the ideal point guard for D'Antoni's system and he will blossom. Add in a healthy Kelenna Azubuike or Wilson Chandler and we have something nice. |
B |
||
We have players that have defense in their DNA. Whether D'Antoni puts emphasis on defense or not, we have players who are accustomed to it naturally. They just aren't amazing at it. |
C+ |
||
With a vast amount of talented players coming in as a second unit, we should have no problem giving our starters a breather. Lets hope they can live up to the hype and prove our depth. |
B |
||
After two years of garbage, D'Antoni finally has a quality team to work with. After bringing the best out of trash like Jared Jeffries and Chris Duhon, talented players should grow even more. |

OVERALL GRADE B+
Summary
Before LeBron James and Chris Bosh flew south, Amare Stoudemire inked a deal with the New York Knicks immediately reviving our battered franchise. The Knicks automatically got a confidence boost, a leader and an all around beast to put on the court.
Soon after Amare's signing, the Knicks sign and trade David Lee to Golden State for Anthony Randolph, Ronny Turiaf and Kelenna Azubuike. Rather than losing Lee for nothing at all, the Knicks flip the all-star for 3 quality players all who filled an important role within our roster, one of which has super saiyan potential waiting to be unlocked.
New faces cause problems to arise; the main question that consistently surfaces is our ability to establish continuity. If this team can not gel we will go nowhere. Players seem to have been bonding with one another going to certain events and making friendships. That's all nice and dandy but the on court relationship matters most. Only time will tell whether the Knicks are contenders in the Eastern Conference or not but one thing is certain, with training camp only a few weeks away we'll definitely have something to be excited for. Stay frosty my friends.

nice job mike...
but i didn’t vote as i am kind of impartial on both i think our bench has potential but it’s too early to say as we haven’t seen our boys play. i give felton a pass as he did play for dan d’antoni. you forgot to add that we have a trade bait in the bench in form of a rotting eddy curry with a 16 M (when traded) dollar contract that will expire this year. loved the dragon ball reference there.
You make a good point, I need to add another option to the poll.

Schumen must have the Bobcats vs. Magic too far ingrained in the brain.
Felton’s a pretty good defender, as is Anthony Randolph.
As for the bench, they have talent there depending on who starts. IF Chandler and Randolph come off the bench, like I hope they do..along with Toney Douglas that’s a pretty nice trio. Mozgov’s shown that he can do one thing very well..and that’s what you like in a bench player.
I think our bench, as they gel, will be a strength of the team as long as Pringles uses it which I think he will.
I think overall they’re a B with the potential to be a B+, A- type team. Gallo and AR have a ton of potential, 3rd year players generally break out..yadda yadda Toney Douglas.
i like that they are ingrained with our failures
adds more to the pot of needing to show up every time
Is Schuhmann grading just the offseason moves or the state of each team in general?
Either way, it’s a little insulting to suggest that the Nets had either as good an offseason as the Knicks, or are in as solid a place as a franchise. The Knicks and Nets can’t both merit a “B”. One of those grades has to be off.
Also the Bucks get a B+? For what? Adding Corey Maggette should not count as an improvement.
corey was added for basically nothing, he's a need if you watched the playoffs...
a guy like maggette was needed at the time and for what they gave for which were a pair of streaky scrubs for him works for the bucks as he gives them the swingman that they needed
He's grading overall improvement that teams made after the offseason.
I agree with you but I see why he may have given the Nets an above average grade. The Nets are a good team on paper with Harris, Lopez, Murphy etc, although I don’t agree with the B grade I can see how he came to it. All Knick biasness aside, no way the Nets are on the same level as this team.
You can’t win 12 games, get rid of players to free up money for a max player, strike out during free agency then be as good as all the teams with B grades on that list. It just isn’t sensible. So I agree with you, that grade is way off, not to take away from the Nets, but they deserve a C, C+ at best.
I also agree with you about the Bucks’ grade. Different guys did different teams, Schuhmann didn’t do all of the grades and when you look at a team like the Magic with a C grade but Washington with a B+(Wall) it’s hard to know how each individual person grading these teams. Looking at the list some of those grades seem very silly, but I’m thinking that may be a result of having more then one guy grade the teams.

The Bucks actually did have a good offseason
They resigned Salmons who was huge for them the second half of the season. If he can play well for a full season, that’ll be huge for MIL.
They added Magette who’s big and strong and can flat-out score.
They added Drew Gooden who can start for Bogut if Bogut’s not healthy, or is a solid back-up center/forward.
They also signed/traded Keyon Dooling and Chris Douglas-Roberts who are good scoring options off the bench, especially at the 2 where they’re weak
And then they signed Earl Boykins, who can somewhat replace Ridnour off the bench to give Jennings a break.
I’d say thats a pretty solid summer. Definitely worth a B. If anything, they’re like us, where they may have trouble finding enough playing time for everyone. But watch out for the Bucks. Seriously. I think they could sneak into the top 4 in the East.
Guess I spoke too soon. lol

Corey Maggette is just the worst
He’s Al Harrington-esque, that’s how much of a black hole he is on offense. He’ll always get his numbers, but his teams have always been hot garbage except for that one year when LAC made the playoffs on the back of Elton Brand, before he sucked. Maybe he’ll work out for the Bucks but I wouldn’t hold my breath for a late-career renaissance.
Salmons has good upside but needs to show a lot more consistency.
Drew Gooden has been around the block a million times and shown that he’s…okay. Not great, not terrible, but solid. From what I hear Bogut won’t be ready for the start of the season. Not sure if Gooden can carry the load for very long.
Dooling, Douglas-Roberts and Boykins will only make a difference at the margins IMO.
Jennings remains very talented, but needs to fill some pretty big holes in his game.
We’ll see… but I think a B is pretty generous. And if Bogut doesn’t come back strong for them I honestly don’t know if I see them in the playoffs.
Yeah I wasn't crazy about the Maggette move
I don’t think he’s what they need other than his ability to get to the FT line.
I think Gooden will keep them afloat at center if Bogut can return by like mid December. He’s not great but he’s a big enough body, can score and a defend a little bit and rebound. I think he’ll be great as a back-up if Bogut can be as dominant as last season.
Yeah, Salmons needs to be more than a post All-Star-break savior for teams. If he can maintain 18 ppg on 45% shooting for a whole season, the Bucks will do really well.
And I think Dooling, CDR and Boykins just add depth to a team with a rising young PG like Jennings who isnt a rookie anymore and should be able to handle a full season. They also have guys like Mbah a Moute, Delfino, Ilyasova and they’re coached by Skiles who doesn’t let guys slack. I think they have a very deep, good team
Completely agree. That said
On paper only:
Lopez > Turiaf,
Harris > Felton (except on D)
Williams > Walker / Buike (‘cuz he’s hurt) / Mason Jr. (more athletic, better upside, etc.)
In terms of the off-season (again, ON PAPER ONLY):
Favors > Rautins AND Fields
Murphy is an excellent rebounder and a good stretch 4, kinda like D Lee but with a 3 point shot
Avery Johnson > L Frank, so they got an upgrade at Coach.
All in all, they had a decent off-season, and have the potential for a pretty good team in a year or two, before Johnson’s yapping voice makes players start showing up to practices wearing deep-implant earplugs. youknowwhatImsayin?
The Knicks' defense may have improved more than the offense
and the offense improved a damn lot.
THE SEASON
will either be really really successful OR really really bad. There’s no middle ground….And you cant grade them until you see what unfolds…

I have to disagree
Because I think they’re pretty much a middle ground team. Most likely they’ll win between 40-46 games which is average to slightly above average, so middle ground.
It’s a huge improvement compared to the last 6 years and it’d be really successful to me but for league standards, it’s pretty middle ground.
WSD seems to always read my mind.
I agree once again.

Equal For me!
We are better than we have been in almost 7yrs. We got talent, talent good enough to get a 7th or 8th spot in the East. Im not going to say 50 or better but we should be in the mid to high 40’s. Normally before All-star break we are already out of the playoff picture, this yr we should be deep in the hunt by season’s end.
