Putting A Halt To My Optimism With A Boom And A Bust

128390736478213_medium

The deprivation of Knicks basketball has officially begun to take a toll on me. The anticipation has become nearly impossible to control and theorizing plans for the future has become too much of a good thing. Looking forward there is a lot of question we want answers for and as usual I asked myself a question. Who's going to boom and who's going to bust? There are so many question marks on this team and this is the perfect question regarding the mysteries that lie within our new acquisitions. Which player will rise above expectations and become the boom? Who will play bad enough that we all weep when he's brought into the game and face palm ourselves when he gets his hands on the ball? As you can see in the picture above I have made my decision.

This was no easy decision, I'd like all the Knicks to play up to their highest peak but that's unlikely. I don't want to shine any type of bad light on any player but we're all Knicks fans here and everything I say about these players already has been discussed. Don't call for my immediate ban if I happen to insult your favorite player on the Knicks roster, its only business.

Star-divide

The Ka-Boom!

128390736478213_medium

Anthony Randolph is our diamond in the rough. His potential is no secret to the league but his ability to unlock it is unknown. The big question is can Mike D'Antoni and the Knicks get him to play a higher level? In Golden State, when on the court, Randolph has shown flashes of brilliance with his athleticism and ferocity. He's a young developing player that had his production halted by an ankle injury mid-season, causing him to miss the remainder of the year. Fully recovered and ready to play, Randolph seems to be back on track with a possible break out season looming with our New York Knicks. Running in D'Antoni's system can't possibly slow his development down and Randolph can blossom into the player he is expected to be. A player with his ability lives for this system and to expect anything less than awesomeness from him should be criminal. It's a new beginning for Randolph, he has a clean slate here and the past can be the past. I feel like he will overachieve here and I'm sure many will agree with that statement. He is our Boom!

The Ka-Bust!

128390736478213_medium

Kelenna Azubuike is an athletic leapfrog with tons of spring in his step. Cool, suave, laid back, all of these things describe Kelenna but he's been tagged with the injury stamp which dampens my excitement for him. "Creaming" yourself after watching some of his highlights is completely justifiable but I try to keep away from watching his awe-aspiring abilities. Azubuike is still ailing from a knee injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season. So far his return is looking pretty bleak and he's most likely due to miss training camp in a couple of weeks. It's unknown when he will return or if he'll be able to play to his abilities. I could only wish that Kelenna was back to normal and ready for the season but I won't get my hopes up. Not to mention he's an unrestricted free agent and can scram on us during next summer. I feel like its going to be a one and done year with the Knicks and Azubuike unfortunately. I'd love to keep him and I'd love for him to be the best he can be but he has to heal and be the player that hes supposed to be. I don't want to be right and I want to be proven wrong but this is just how I feel. He is our Bust!

Possible Ka-Booms!

Raymond Felton- Finally playing in a system that his abilities were made for, Felton has a chance to prove that he deserves to be in the conversation as one of the top 10 point guards in the NBA

Wilson Chandler- Possibly starting at shooting guard Chandler could develop with better players on the court alongside him. He knows what he needed to work on and if he see's enough time on the court he could have a breakout year.

Danilo Gallinari- After digging deep inside himself and realizing he isn't just a shooter, Gallinari found ways to be effective with his back to the basket and while driving to the hoop. If Gallinari can slightly develop his athleticism and keep getting to the foul line he can become a big problem for defenses not just beyond the arc but inside it as well.

Possible Ka-Busts!

Timofey Mozgov- Although Mozzie impressed us all during his time with Russia in the FIBA World Championship he's found his way on the questionable bust list. I like Mozzie, I like him a lot, and his chances of booming are higher than his chances of busting... There is still a chance he is the second coming of Darko Milicic though so therefore he finds himself here and not above. Sorry Tim.

Roger Mason Jr- Coming off of declining stats last season Roger Mason is a big question mark. Maybe he will be better here than he was last year in San Antonio, but there's also a possibly he's on the downfall part of his career. He could possibly continue his decline and disappoint us all.

Bill Walker- Walker may not be the flashiest guy or the most powerful guy around but he is talented. The problem with Walker is that with so many new faces on the roster his role on the team got smaller and smaller. Smart money says Walker won't be a Knick for much longer.

Now I know if I made a poll asking who is most likely to boom this year Randolph would have taken 98% of the votes and that's no fun. Instead...

To be honest

I think that we’re all going to be a little bit frustrated with Mr. Randolph this season. Don’t get me wrong, I’d let him have his way with me. No pause needed. But we all have to remember, the kid is only 21. That’s a junior in college. I think it’ll take at least a year for the kid to regain his confidence from nellie ball

I see your point though. I believe he’ll bounce back rather fast, playing under Nelson can’t be thaaaaaat bad can it…?

I don't know man

Randolph is a REALLY sensitive kid. I’ve met him a few times, and he seems like he is both self conscious as well as somewhat insecure. Let’s remember, he was getting chewed out by Nelson when he was 19 and 20 years old. I think it may have done a number on him

I think it should be Amare's job

To teach him how to man up and help him gain confidence. I hope that playing with guys like Amar’e, Gallo and Felton, who are all dripping in swagger, will give him that confidence boost. Also, D’Antoni needs to force himself not to yank Randolph off the floor the minute he screws up, which he inevitably will.

Yeah, Swagger is contagious.

When your around players with that kind of swagger it rubs off on the entire team. He’ll fit in, at least I’m hoping he will.

But at the same time

Some guys are just inherently self conscious. I mean, the kid is tall as hell, and skinny, and has been for some time now, so you’ve got to imagine that he’s got a bit of a complex about him. Also, you have a kid whose parents moved him around when he was younger bc of their military obligations. I don’t want to get all psychological on this, but look at Jordan. Dealt with rejection when young, had those ears that he has always been largely embarrassed by. Same goes with Lebron. Some guys take it personally. And I’d say that’s a good thing! Sure, he might get moody sometimes, and pout, but I get the feeling that he’s the kind of guy who will have a chip on his shoulder forever, and use it as motivation

I think Mozgov is pretty bust proof.

I’m not saying he’s going to be a boom either. He’ll probably be a solid backup or role playing kind of guy, but I really don’t see him as a bust. Here’s why:

The guy is so freakin’ active.

Think about big men who have been busts. What they all have in common is that they just didn’t “want it.” They were “soft” “timid” “slow” “out of shape” lazy." But you can’t name a big man with a lot of heart and energy who was a bust.

If you’re 7’1’’ and you hustle and go all out, and stay active, there’s a place for you no matter how raw you are. Mozgov may not be a star, but the kid has too much energy, hunger, and hustle to be a bust. And that’s good.

They will be for!

by StarksMiddleFinger on Sep 14, 2010 8:00 PM EDT reply actions

He's getting paid three million a year, not five.

I Agree with you, I don’t see him being significantly worse than his paycheck, and at his age, he has a decent shot of being significantly better than it. For this reason, I can’t see him as a “bust.”

by Osborn on Sep 14, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you there

I see the competetiveness in him and he is not only active but coordinated enough to be active and effective. He may end up fouling way too much but I think he’ll find a way to do some good things in limited minutes.

I think the thing that killed Darko in the league is that he isn’t a high energy practice player. If Timo shows good attitude in practice, I think he’ll end up contributing.

The other thing about him is that he’s a good foul shooter. I’d be surprised if he didn’t end up at least a decent backup in the NBA.

by fuhry on Sep 15, 2010 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

He might have a hard time staying on the court

He fouled a ton in the FIBA tourney where fouls are much less ticky-tack than in the league. Even though he’ll play limited minutes, you still don’t want him to just hack away.

by Anthony Bonner's Subpoena on Sep 15, 2010 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Is that true?

I honestly have no idea, but from what I saw there were a lot of questionable foul calls on Mosgov during the FIBA games. I think there’s a good chance his block on Derrick Rose goes uncalled in an NBA game for example.

Then again, rookies get no respect.

by flossy on Sep 15, 2010 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Rookies and just big, mobile, physical guys

Not that he’s even remotely in Shaq’s league, but Shaq used to get whistled for non-fouls just because he was so physically dominant that it seemed like he was doing something wrong. There aren’t very many guys in the league with Timo’s combination of size, heft and activity. Combined with his rookieness, I’m thinking he’ll rack up the fouls. I’d love to be wrong though.

"But when he saw it, he just put his hands up and they couldn’t give it to him. It just fell to the ground, I-I don’t, you know … So, that showed me he had great experience..." - Jeff Van Gundy

by Anthony Bonner's Subpoena on Sep 15, 2010 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh yeah fouls will be an issue this year

I just didn’t know that NBA games were officiated more tightly than FIBA. I was under the impression that the reverse was true.

It’ll be a steep learning curve for Timo re: fouls, but I will say this—if he’s getting called for non-fouls simply by virtue of being so physically dominant, that’s as much cause for celebration as it is for concern at least in the short term.

by flossy on Sep 15, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

It's mostly going to the rim.

Int’l refs are less likely to whistle for incidental contact than in NBA, permitting defenders to be more physical. The D-Wade tactic of just getting into the paint and seeking contact doesn’t work as well (which is good IMO). There’s also no defensive 3 seconds, so big men can camp out in the lane.

This guy goes in more depth

But yea, the officiating is just part of what will probably be a rough transition for Moz.

by Anthony Bonner's Subpoena on Sep 15, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

If he gets fouled a lot this season

it’ll be totally fine imo. The guy needs a year to adjust to the NBA, learn what gets called and what doesn’t. We won’t be asking him to give us starter’s minutes this year so if he fouls out quick it won’t be terrible. The key is for Timo to get 10-15 minutes a game to get some experience and expand his game. Hopefully when Turiaf’s contract runs out Timo can step in and start, and if Rony plays like he has in his career he can become the backup provided Moz improves significantly in 2 years.

If Moz plays 12-18 minutes, that’s probably a lot at this stage of his development. And why wouldn’t you want him to go all out like Zo Mourning — totally clog the middle, goin after each shot and each board with abandon-that’s contagious. And they can’t call a foul every play now, can they?

by PTfromRP on Sep 19, 2010 5:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I voted other.

Wilson Chandler is lined up to be less than fantastic this season. Limited minutes and limited production. We’ve got SG’s who can shoot and SF is occupied by Gallinari and Randolph. Wilson needs to learn how to shoot 3’s. Badly. – imo.

and

Anthony Randolph has so much damn hype among Knicks fans. He’s being hyped like people expect him to do 16 and 8 next season. That’s some serious stuff. There’s a possibility that he ends up with those same 11.6 and 6.5 numbers again. Is that considered a ‘bust’? I’m not sure. That’s still pretty good for a backup SF/PF on a playoff team.

by BJabs on Sep 14, 2010 8:05 PM EDT reply actions

After watching Wil play last year

I disagree. I think Chandler is a very good player. Yes, he’s not a great three point shooter. But last year, in the second half of the year, he cut down on his 3 attempts and shot 50 percent from the floor. How many non-centers shoot 50% from the floor? Barely any. And Wil is a decent defender of 2’s, 3’s and 4’s. I don’t think he’s going to bust.

Walker impressed me too last year with his efficiency but it was a much smaller sample, so I’d say it’s more likely that he is unable to repllicate his success last year. Buike could be hurt and diminished, and Mason has shown he can be good with significant minutes in the right role, but he may not get it.

Nice thing is that between Chandler, Buike, Mason, and Walker, we really just need one or two of them to not be a bust and we’ll be fine.

by fuhry on Sep 15, 2010 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Def agree

Chandler’s bust potential rests on his discipline to not shoot threes. If he can do that, he has one of the more low-risk games on the team.

Walker, on the other hand, provided almost no evidence of being able to shoot prior to his stint with the Knicks last season. I like the dude a lot and hope he continues to take it to the rim with the aggression, but I fully expect his shooting #s to fall off a bit.

what is FG%?

eFG% is what matters. 3’s matter. Especially with D’Antoni.

Wilson Chandler is precisely the wrong kind of SG to play for D’Antoni. No 3’s. Not acceptable.

SG’s for D’Antoni shoot 3’s in transition, shoot 3’s on the kickouts from the PG, shoots 3’s on the kickouts from Amar’e even. Shoot 3’s all the time.

Yeah they slash too, but who can’t slash?

bout 30% from behind the arc 2 years ago

last year most people agree that wilson’s goal was to comeback effectively from ankle surgery. After this summer, since he’s had a chance to focus more so on his shooting and ball handling, hopefully he can get that % to mid-high 30s. If so, he’ll be playing the 2-4 all night long

Here is a list of highest all-time PER for 19 year-old rookies (1000+ mins only):

Moses Malone
LeBron James
Carmelo Anthony
Tracy McGrady
Dwight Howard
Cliff Robinson
ANTHONY RANDOLPH
Thaddeus Young
Stephon Marbury
Kevin Durant
(tied w/ Kevin Garnett)

Now I know PER is not the be all, end all and that advanced stats only tell part of the picture. But JESUS FUCKING CHRIST look at the names on that list! Hall of Famers, future Hall of Famers, perennial All-NBA players, one crazy motherfucker who is now playing in China, Thaddeus Young (I was a little surprised at that but hey, good for him), Cliff Robinson, and Randolph. (And for what it’s worth, I would take a Cliff Robinson. Dude was more than solid. And Randolph is already a better rebounder and shot-blocker than Robinson in his prime. by a lot.).

Azubuike has a nice game and I hope he comes to camp as close to 100% as possible because he could really contribute next season if healthy.

But real talk, folks: if Anthony Randolph reaches his potential, Azubuike’s career highlight will end up being that he was part of “The Anthony Randolph trade” that you will tell your grandchildren about. And that’s not meant as a knock on Kelenna.

Bill, I think he’s good off the bench and so I’ve tempered my expectations of him. I haven’t expected him to boom so in my eyes he can’t bust.

as much as i'd like to homer

I will say that AR is the boom and the bust. He was the meat & potatoes of that Dlee trade. Bookie was a very decent underrated throw in, and turiaf as well(but important to a team w/ no chemisry and no c’s)

But back to the topic… AR can bring it, we all know from the single game clips he put up a few times…and the highlights are contagiously effective. But his main issue has been being O.C. Out of control. He’s said it himself that he has worked this summer on fundamentals that would limit turnovers. But he has to make smart shot attempts and try not to do too much.

Being O.C isnt good, i know it was kind of hard being a young borderline lottery pick on the Warriors..but he has vets on this team , one particular who plays his position, who can school him on the ins and outs.

AR can most definately BOOM but lets not be too homerish to believe that the chance that he can bust is impossible.

Anthony Randolph will arrive at the Garden in a chariot pulled by unicorns! He will play 48mpg and see time at all five positions! He will stare so ferociously at his opponents that they will block their own shots out of respect!

Don't get me wrong, Josh Smith is very good

I would love a weak-side shot blocker of his caliber, and there’s no doubt he’s an above-average player despite some knuckle-headedness. I think his PER jumping up to 21 has to do with the fact that he finally, finally just stopped shooting threes last year… It’ll be interesting to see if that stays true with a new coach.

But anyway I think you have to compare their numbers at the same age. At 19 and 20 Josh Smith put up a PER of 15.4 and 15.5. Randolph did 16.9 and 18.7. AR’s blocks per 36 is juuuuust a hair lower than Smith’s career average but he’s a significantly better rebounder by any metric. And I think AR has the tools to be a much more dangerous and versatile weapon on the offensive end.

So… as homerish as it may sound if AR never becomes any better than Josh Smith I will be a little disappointed.

by flossy on Sep 17, 2010 8:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Im going with Mason Jr.

He seems like one of those guys who have one really good yr in the league, it’s gets him a infamous rep as a shooter or specialist, also gets him paid, then the next season or two he never quite lives up to the hope and hype of the team he plays for and is never the same player again.

Not expecting much from Walker or Curry either, for some reason I just feel like the other Jr, young Patrick Ewing is going to impress in camp and steal some minutes at the 2 & 3. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t but it would be a nice story to have play out during the season as we fight for the 7th spot in the East.
