Timofey Mozgov is talkin' 'bout practice, man.
Timofey Mozgov put up his latest weblog entry a few days ago and Alexander Chernykh came through with the translation again. This time Mozzie Bear gave us some insight on how Knicks practices are run. And it sounds like he's a little surprised at how light they are. But he made a point about players being expected to take care of themselves physically in the NBA, puttin' in that work on their own time or sum'in. Best of all he gave us this precious bit of information:
So, my record for bench press is 268 lbs.
Boom. I don't know if that's a lot for an athlete but that's like one and a half mes or eight Nate Robinsons so take heed. If you're going to try to match him pound of pound, just know that a routine like Timofey's may cause numbness of the extremities.

268 that's it?
I’m not saying that 268 isn’t a good bench but for a guy that size? Shouldn’t he be up in the mid 300’s for a professional athlete? I weigh 185 pounds and can get close to that and most of my friends who aren’t even as big as me can get more than that.
He's not a defensive lineman
He’s a seven-footer who plays basketball, and bench pressing is not easy for tall people (it’s also a horrible indicator of strength, especially for basketball). Just because the guy can’t bench Eddy Curry doesn’t mean he’s not strong

couldnt agree more
I’m 210 and only bench around 180 Max but routinely outmuscle guys that weigh more than me or can bench more. My leg press Max is over 800 lbs, that’s been much more useful overall having legs much stronger than any opponent, no problem boxing out, backing down or standing my ground in the defensive post.

268 is barely more than his weight
The mid-300s would definitely be better.
More importantly, I’d like to know how strong his legs are.
"The Mets are gonna be amazin'!" - Casey Stengel
"Bounding and astounding!" - Clyde Frazier
as a fellow tall person (though I'm obviously not at Mozgov's level) I need to tell you
that his range of motion is huge.
that's weak
he doesn’t have to be a PUMPER
but with his size that should be nothing
but like rooster said, for bball players… he should be working on his CORE, Legs, quickness (b/c he def. doesn’t look like he’ll increase his overall speed or how fast he can go, quickness is both mind and muscles – quick twitch for bball players, although he’s 7 foot something but has good agility), shoulders, and his hands..
I hear all the time from Clyde, he can grab those balls in practice, but he can’t seem to hold on to them in games, so work on your hands and concentrating… so you can catch and finish – DAMMIT!
Q: Who is at center?
A: beats the hell out of me!
okay, I'll retract weak for MOZZIE...but big fella, show some confidence out there, man!
I’m hoping his development is coming along…
we could really use some form of him in the near future….
work on focus & hands!

Longer arms mean you gotta go farther with the bar
someone 185 but with arms 1/2 the size of Moz’s probably can lift as much or as more. But I doubt you’re as strong as Moz.

all i really want to know...
is if he’s strong enough to catch catchable passes that will lead to easy points.
seriously, is it that important? ‘cause i’m pretty confident he can bench more than camby, pau gasol, dikembe mutombo, javale mcgee, kevin garnett… and probably chris bosh.
yeah...talk squats Moz!
it’s the legs and glutes you’ll be needing.
its one thing to start it with a positive jam and it's another thing to see it on through....The Hold Steady

my max was 295..and i weight 180.
But that was 2 years ago. since then ive grad’d college and had my 2nd seed. smh. Cant even buy time for the gym now.
But Like most have said.. in basketball.its more about core and leg strength for the big boys.
"they try to do what he do, and been where he's been, but they get folded in two.....he's the dude"
Not that much at all
but he’s a basketball player so I don’t know if this means alot for him….sounds kinda weak tho…I’m 190 and work out regularly with 245…and I’m NOT a 7 footer….so….
268 is a lot for someone who is that tall
the taller you are, the more of a disadvantage it is when it comes to benching and other workouts.
I train athletes for a living
First question is that 268 lbs is a weird sum for the gym. Weights in this country in lbs run 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 35, 45 and the Bar that is used is 45 lbs itself. Some specialty weights are 100’s and a few others for powerlifters.
Was it 265 and he counted the collars? Maybe, but I digress just my dumb thought.
Timo is 7’1 with ridiculously long arms and thus has to overcome a lot of leverage disadvantages that his body has (for lifting weights). I am 6’1, tall for an every day guy but not an NBA player, my current max is bench is 290 at 205 lbs, so in comparison, no not impressive. He never will be able to develop a world class bench thanks to his long arms, but he definitely could handle some improvement in that area.
maybe he means kilograms?
Still it’d be about 122kg to equal 268.
And if its 268kgs he benches just under 590lbs
