So I know myself and other P&T residents have wondered why it seems Gallo and Ill Wil cant seem to get it going at the same time. No one really knows for sure, but I wonder if they ever have had a good game at the same time during this season. Im sure it happened last season, but this year not so much.
So I decided to find out for lack of something better to do. Here are some numbers to ponder. And please understand that Im not throwing these numbers around to make either of them look good or bad. Just to show whats going on with our 2 young guns. Jump for some number crunching.
Ok, lets start with something simple. Number of times they both scored 20 points in the same game this season......2. Once against Denver and once against Detroit. So as we thought, its very rare they both explode at the same time. The Knicks went 1-1 in those games, but it could have easily been 2-0 with the 2 point Denver loss.
Next, and more interesting, how many games have they both reached double digit shot attempts? 15. So in more than half of the games played, one of the 2 hasnt even attempted 10 shots. Some of that can be attributed to there not being enough shots. Some is Gallo's passive attitude. Either way, there it is. The Knicks record in these games is 8-7. Interesting sidenote, look at some of the opponents when this happened: Chicago, Boston, Denver (twice), Miami (twice), and Orlando. Maybe Gallo really only gets aggressive against the better teams as some believe. One more note, 7 of these games coincided with Amare's 9 game 30 point streak. That information intrigues me. It means that Felton was probably shooting a whole lot less than he has lately. Maybe that needs to happen again for everyone's sake.
Next, lets see how many times they both shot 40% from the field in the same game. Happened 12 times. We went 7-5 in those games. A good amount of these games happened in December, which suggests that things are being figured out. Another tidbit......In 7 of those 12 games, one of them only had single digit shot attempts. Again, it was usually Gallo. 1 more for you, both players scored in double figures in every one of these games. So even though they both didnt get a lot of shots up in most of these contests, they still did a good job of getting points with limited opportunities.
Let's go long range. The Knicks are 9-3 when both of the young gunners hit 2 3 pointers. We all know when Gallo's on, the Knicks are hard to beat. But when they are BOTH on, its even harder. Of the 3 losses, 2 came early in the season before the Knicks turned the corner, and 1 was against Miami. This shows 2 things. 1) Its D'Antoni ball at its best. Spread the floor, create open 3 pointers for your shooters or use the space they create to finish in the lane. Obviously it was working. 2) It shows why some people would rather trade Chandler than Gallo. We play so much better when he is on from 3 cause it's best for the system. But that isnt really his game. He can hit the 3, but he's best attacking the rim. Some would argue he is out of place. Im not one of them, just bringing some insight
Last one for now, and easily the most overlooked.....Gallo has shot TWICE AS MANY FREE THROWS as Wil. 182-90. That is amazing for 2 reasons. 1) Wil drives to the rim way more than Gallo does. 2) Gallo just camps behind the 3 point line like a euro sissy boy. Ok only one of those is factual, although P&T can make you believe the other at times. But yeah, if you told me before the season that in January Gallo would have double Wil's FT atempts, and Wil would be shooting a higher percentage behind the arc than Gallo, I would have bet money you were wrong. It just shows that BOTH players have adjusted their game for the better.
If you guys have anymore interesting comparisons, please share in the comments. I didnt know what else to look up.
