Really fellows and fellowesses,
The Knicks aint, simply aint, making a trade this season unless Carmelo gets traded to another team and signs an extension with them. Sure, the Knicks could use some shoring up in the rebounding big man and backup point guard department....
But the thing is, Walsh would be crazy to trade away any pieces he might use in a Carmelo Anthony trade. And he'd also be crazy to make any trades which add to next year's salary cap, because that would prevent him from signing Carmelo outright. Walsh ain't crazy. Ain't.
So the Knicks are going to stand pat until right before the deadline - they'll make a play for Melo, but if they don't get him, they're standing pat on everything else that adds to the cap next year. Now, if Melo were to get traded to the Nets (and if I was the Russian, I'd send Brook Lopez over there in a heartbeat for Anthony), and Melo signed an extension with the Nets, or if Melo changed course and signed the extension with Denver, well, then you might see some of the other deals y'all are talking about.
Otherwise? Ain't happening. Ain't nothing happening. I know the trade checker is fun and all, but I'm starting to get irritated with all this speculation because I'm reasonably certain none of it is happening as long as Melo is out there unextended. I just think Donnie is too saavy to blow his chance at Carmelo Anthony for a backup point guard and a backup center - not while there's still a chance we get him for cheap or sign him outright.
Now Donnie is going to talk positively about possible trades and make it seem like he's willing to wheel and deal for someone, but that's just some posturing to try to force Denver to accept less than they want to accept for Melo.
