I swear I’m going Penn State.

Alright, I'm taking my wife out to dinner.

This lockout had better be gone when I get back or I’m giving out beatings first and asking questions later.

I think this is my first post since seasons end.

And i would much rather it be about my love for TD’s defense and not my pessimism about this junk.

That said, will there be some sort of open trading season? I fear for Shumpert.

Any basis for that? Or are just just goin’ with your gut?

Grrr - Next week now?!

That does it (Stamps out fire, picks up tent, pokes Berman in the eye on the way out)…at least it ain’t toast yet. In other news…

by screamedia on Nov 10, 2011 11:10 PM EST reply actions

In a way

I can see the players giving in and taking this deal. I think the NBPA would have taken it tonight out of desparation, but they need to get more opinions.

Either they barely get a majority vote to take it next week, or the whole thing blows up. Either way it’ll be nice to have some kind of direction to this damn process

by WSD on Nov 10, 2011 11:56 PM EST reply actions

The players are voting on it now?

That makes me cautiously confident.

They’re not taking this lousy deal. Nobody connected with the union thinks they should, and most players think that the union has caved too much already. Anybody still mad at Melo for getting his money and not waiting until free agency? He was completely right for doing what he did. If the owners get what they want, future free agents will have nothing to look forward to except crappy deals with small market teams.

They either take this mediocre deal or

Wind up with a 47% share of the BRI and a hard cap.
Or decertify and lose in court like the NFL players did.

by Mikel L on Nov 11, 2011 9:15 AM EST up reply actions

True in some aspects, but not in all. We don’t have their fame and fortune, but aren’t they entitled to that? They’re the finest athletes in the world and nobody puts a gun to their employer’s head and forces them to pay them what they make. If we think we can get a better job somewhere else, we’re free at any time to get up and take it wherever we want to. That’s something the owners are trying to take away from them. Sorry Dwight Howard, you’re one of the top basketball players in the world, but you’ll stay where you are or you’ll go play for one of the few small market teams that has salary cap space. Oh, and if you stay where you are you won’t get a raise because there’s a hard cap now. It may seem fair to us guys struggling to pay our bills, but it’s really not fair when you think about it.

I love when people say "NBA players are greedy!"

Fuck yeah if I’m what comprises the product of a multi-billion dollar business, I want my fair percentage. Yeah a lot of people think it’s ridiculous they’re making millions of dollars to play basketball, but the funny thing is these same people are often part of the many many more millions of people around the world who buy the NBA merch, tickets, TV packages, etc. They make that money because we the people are giving it to them.

But hey I have a shitty job compared to an NBA player so I’m gonna bitch and complain that these greedy thugs should be happy with the NBA minimum instead of always wanting more. Crab mentality. It’s sad.

Fish Fingers give me a break.

by GAx on Nov 11, 2011 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

If you are putting me in that group of crab mentality you'd be dead wrong

and while your premise is correct, it’s certain idealisms behind perhaps I think I am saying is where I disagree. I myself would be considered talent. I left working for people/companies because I will NEVER earn my worth doing so and, worse at times, am subject to their own ideals and ethics. Unfortunately I’ve worked for some very unethical people, tho not all. Nowhere do you see me say they are greedy. But I can say that for every Howard there is a Curry, for every Lebron there is a Zach. For every great or hard working player there is a lazy or unethical player. While the owners IMO dug the hole for themselves financially , lets not say that these player are not earning a lavish income. I love Allan Houston but by no means would ever consider him an 100 mil man. I would never berate him for getting the cash and he’ll still be/is one of my top maybe 5 players all time. Not because he was great or earned his 100 mil, but as player and a person he was/is great, and I respect that.

I make art for sports org’s as well as websites and marketing. I make money off these orgs. But I also handle my business with honesty and integrity and give a 100%+. I could earn alot more and can be called an idiot for not doing so and have been called just that. But I also guarantee that my customers come back because I leave them room to make money, not just spend, and I give them what they ask for/expect and hopefully sometimes exceed expectations. It balances out. That is the basis for how I feel about business, talent, product etc.

Now if you wanna talk about agents then I’m all on board for bitching about greed and unethical practices. But in this case, you can’t just put everyone in a bubble and say they’re part of some whole bitchy, whiny group when it is not the case. I do take offense to that. I see the problem on both sides, not just in the players or just the owners. I think the system has gotten bloated and the balances have been tipped. But you can’t point the finger in just one direction. I lean towards the side of the players, but not because they’re underpaid or getting shafted. I side with them because I think everyone should be able to live their comfortably when they can no longer do what their life’s work is. Believe me, I don’t have a shitty job. But neither does an NBA player. Neither does an NBA owner. I wasn’t bitching. I was making a point. I understand and not chastising you, but hopefully you’ll see where I’m coming from.

by screamedia on Nov 11, 2011 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

Whoa.

No man. I wasn’t pointing you out. I wasn’t pointing anyone out, really, except I guess the faceless denizens of Internet comment sections who don’t even seem to be NBA fans but love rushing to call the players goons and thugs(great code guys, nobody can see the racism). I didn’t even know what you specifically posted until I saw this and had to see if I’d maybe offended you based on what you posted. I hear you and basically agree with everything you said, though.

If we’re speaking objectively, NOBODY’S worthy of being a $100 Million man. Players, CEO’s, Presidents, nobody. But the money’s there because it’s a successful business that has more to do with the players and people enjoying what they do than T-shirt guns and Red Panda during halftime. I’m mainly upset because we should have had a few actual game threads by now, but the way the owners have literally given up nothing during negotiations and wasted everyone’s time for the last 9 months on offers so full of wtf it’s obvious they’ve been swinging for the fences from the start and never intended on negotiating in good faith.

Fish Fingers give me a break.

by GAx on Nov 11, 2011 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry dude and agree on the game threads, I really did think you were calling me an idiot

Truth is, give the hardliners a little excess and they’ll still find a way most likely to let it slip away. This should’ve been a done deal. If they really wanted to do something solid, they’d stop letting agents beat em to the bank and dictate terms. If the deal is bad walk away. But instead they dig into the pool and cry foul when the waters cold. It’s a handful but I don’t see, why can’t the owners come together and overule the hard heads? Is there some sorta byline that says a handful can spoil the pot? Shut the boneheads up and get the deal done already. All good though. I jumped the gun. I’ve been off the boards mostly til this past week as the anticipation built and then got yanked away. I miss the game threads too.

On one hand I can't blame them.

They are getting the ass end of a bad deal.

On the other hand, they are damn fools for thinking a) They can get anything better or b) Decertifying will suddenly give them all the leverage.

by Mikel L on Nov 12, 2011 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Yup

If the players looked at the NHL lockout, they’d realize that the owners aren’t bluffing.
