Around SBN: Why We're Skeptical Of LeBron James

Bassy's analysis is always worth a look. The hope is that Melo's passing improves to accommodate Chandler's presence, but his sharing numbers to date aren't too encouraging. In any event, Chandler's got that D.

Very interesting post

Bassy failed to acknowledge those beautiful passes Melo made to a cutting Renaldo Balkman against NJ… Small sample size obviously, but with a target as big and mobile as Chandler, I assume that the two will be able to adjust.

not putting this all on you Seth

but I don’t know why everyone is all hung up on how they think Carmelo will share and distribute the ball. This black hole talk is a fallacy. Melo simply has done his job over the course of his career, and his job has primarily been at the SF position.

By nature his position does not usually equate to tons of assists and if you compare him to other “greats” at the same position his numbers are very competitive

Lebron tops the field with somewhere between a 6-8 assist avg but there is considerable drop off after that. The next “star” small forward that leads in assists is Paul Pierce with a 3.8 avg and next to him is Melo with a 3.1 avg.

Kevin Durant averages 2.7 assists. Does that make him a black hole also? does it make him selfish?

I’m telling you it’s all a matter of perception. Melo was given freedom to go out and score in Denver and that’s what he did. He did the same when he first got here and now he’s being asked to take on more responsibility and he’s doing it. He didn’t just learn how to pass or suddenly develop court vision. He’s a smart player who has always had this ability but only now he is getting to put it to use within the confines of a system that plans to take advantage of that ability.

I’m not going to say Melo is Stockton with the rock but he is not the ball hungry hungry hippo who can’t live without the rock either. I just can’t fathom why people are so surprised Melo can make/ is expected to make plays for other people without scoring.

it's because of his isolations

and contested shots, which make it seem he should have passed the ball

it's funny but again that's perception.

most star players will take contested shots if they’re from their spots on the floor. That’s because star players feel they’re good enough to still hit those shots and in some cases they’re right.

The part I find funny is that I’ve watched Chauncey Billups as a PG take just as many if not more bad shots as Carmelo and yet I’ve never heard him labeled a black hole. All I hear about him is how much of a leader he is and how he’s a great teammate. No one ever questions who was sharing the court with Burps, even when he came here in the trade it was all about how Amare and Melo were going to exist because they liked to shoot a ton of shots and stop the ball…I never heard the media or any smart basketball people say “hey…this Billups guy kinda chucks alot too.” In fact the slant was that Billups veteran leadership was going to be the thing that managed everything and somehow prevented the black hole from swallowing the Garden.

players can change

he has the talent to do this, thing, whatever we’re gonna make him do. He just needs the mentality and people around him to do it.

Problem is he’s got his ways.

All true

But I think we’d both agree that the more Melo does to dispense with that reputation, the more Chandler can contribute on offense.

absolutely

we’ll see…much like all things knicks, it’ll either be a bliss or burden to watch. (please bliss, please bliss, pretty pretty please!)
