Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Jared Jeffries doesn’t deserve your boos, because in so many ways, Jared Jeffries is the most Knickiest Knick that’s ever Knicked.

Before we start booing Jeffries, Knicks fans, let’s remember why we loved John Starks. Not just because he could hit threes and refused to get pushed around by Reggie and Jordan despite being outclassed by both of them. But because before joining the Knicks he bagged groceries, and because when he came out of nowhere that first year, we were all amazed to hear him speak for the first time and realize that you could barely understand a word he said.

Chris Gethard, who is excellent, on Jared Jeffries, who is not excellent, but still worthy of your respect. Whether or not you're down with Jeffries, I highly recommend this one. Chris's appreciation of the strangest, unlikeliest Knicks is plenty familiar around these parts.

i'm not actually about the misfits lol

i like the good players

but i don’t mind jeffries because he knows his place and what he’s supposed to do to contribute to winning. even though he lacks talent, he is smart and unselfish. in an odd way, he is the type of guy i could see on a championship team.

Jeffries is not the guy to boo

I mean he works hard. That’s all you can ask. It’s not his fault he is offensively inept.

Article makes a lot of sense

So many of New York’s beloved sports heroes fit this criteria of being kind of a loser.
Michael Strahan with his gap tooth comes to mind.
Marian Gaborik is the polished smooth sharpshooter. Sean Avery is the pest. Who is more endearing to the NYC fans?

GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!

by tanman5 on Dec 23, 2011 2:27 PM EST reply actions

Strahan is an all time great, Gaborik when healthy is one of the best players in the NHL

Although some were trying to run Gaborik out of town last year. And Strahan was the Osi Umenyiora of his day with all his bitching and moaning about his contract. Maybe Avery’s similar, but really no one likes him anymore cuz he sucks now.

What Jeffries is only applies to the Knicks anyway. The Knicks have been a bunch of misfits for years and that he’s still here he should be cheered now that we (might be) are good.

I agree with this to a certain extent

Booing him before a scrimmage is stupid. We should support him. We should want him to do well. He’s not a player who deserves everlasting scorn. It’s not like he cold clocked his girlfriend’s dad or said that his teammates aren’t up to his level or something.

That said, I think it’s perfectly fine to boo individual poor plays by Jeffries, just as it would be for any player. If you want to boo Jeffries when he blows a layup or gives the ball away, be my guest.

I could understand booing him when he made big money, because he’s not a big money player, but why boo him now when he’s just making the minimum? It’s not like he’s stealing money anymore.

I feel like this crawled out of my own head

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the guy can defend five positions. There might not be another guy in the league who can do that. He never complains. Now that he’s making the minimum and hopefully won’t play in crunch time, we should give him a reset.

by TheRealKingFish on Dec 23, 2011 3:03 PM EST reply actions

I was going to

write a long response for why the 90s Knicks were certainly not lovable losers, but nobody wants to read that. Don’t boo players on your own team. Leave the self-loathing to New Jersey, or lack of basketball knowledge to Miami.

Also, this:

by rzor on Dec 23, 2011 3:22 PM EST reply actions

great article

Alot of people booed because of game 2 in Boston, which is kind of stupid. If you look at who was on the floor with 4 seconds left in that game:

Mason, Walker, Douglas, Melo, Jeffries. hmmmmm

If thats the reason (and it was for some i’m sure), boo Melo for not getting a shot off in that situation and boo Amar’e for getting gassed so much in warmups that he hurt his back and was a non factor in games 2-4. Shit…boo Isaiah for even equating Jeffries with a Knick uniform in the first place. I’m not advocating booing anyone really, just sayin’.

To boo him for still being a Knick when we now have a true 5 making him look even worse is also not cool. We never booed Herb Williams when he had Ewing, you know why? Because Herb would never be in that situation. Now Jared will never be in that situation again, so i’m happy.

because it’s as good as money for us. :-)

I hate fans booing players at this point in the year

If the team is under achieving fair play but the season hasn’t even started yet, but that said this is New York.

This article was hilarious and great fun to read

I also agreed with just about every point. I particularly LOL’d at the bit about Melo vs. Amar’e and Jeffries falling down.

I think liking the lovable losers pretty much sums up about 90% of the P&T community

i couldn’t stand the booing. that was the least classiest moment in the garden, ever. i felt embarrassed. and for that reason, jared jeffries is on my fantasy team. do me well jared jeffries!

JJ doesn't deserve to get booed, he reminds me of the little engine that tries but couldn't

plus i would find it completely hilarious if karma came and bit the team in the ass being in game 7 of the finals, game tied, 5 seconds left and somehow JJ gets the ball and ends up scoring to win it all. (Should this ever happen i want it to be noted i called it first)

I know he wasn't perfect

But I’m a little offended, on behalf of John Starks, by the Jared Jeffries comparison. Seriously, no.

by flossy on Dec 23, 2011 10:59 PM EST reply actions

It's a little hard to feel bad...

I have nothing against Jared Jeffries the person. Honestly. But to feel bad for him getting booed MSG, where is has performed some of the most horrific competitive basketball that the earth has ever seen?

I hope he does well believe me. But when Jared Jeffries goes home after a game, he goes home to a really big house, where he has multiple TVs and nice cars, and a hot lady…I mean do you really feel bad?

Every two weeks when Jared Jeffries looks at his paycheck, does it look like yours? And when he gets up in the morning and thinks about going to work, does he have the same feeling you have? i’m sure I’d like the guy as a person, but do you really feel bad for Knicks fans booing him?

by teksurgical on Dec 23, 2011 11:57 PM EST reply actions

fuck yeah he has more money, nicer things, and a hotter wife than me let's all treat him like shit it's cool guys

I mean maybe if he was still making the money he was making under Isiah, I could get behind boo’ing Jared for his production/money, but the dude is making relative peanuts and returned to a team that was shite while he was here. Maybe boo him if he’s sucking during a game, but during his entrance to an open practice?

Fish Fingers give me a break.

This is just rationalizing deplorable behavior

Knick fans should know better and behave better.

Definitely

And he’s not even an asshole. I mean booing Marbury is one thing, but of the million things that are (rightfully) criticized about Jeffries, effort isn’t one of them

by tanman5 on Dec 27, 2011 2:23 AM EST up reply actions

also

if he ever puts a string of good games together, Knicks fans will realize it. And cheer him loudly. But it takes more than Mike Breen trying to convince us, he actually needs to play good basketball to get cheered, like everyone else.

by teksurgical on Dec 24, 2011 12:02 AM EST reply actions

he did put together a very good string of games

late 2009- early 2010 and people were questioning whether we should even trade him for cap space for 2010! to be honest that came after a reasonably consistent team was in place, so maybe there is some hope for him yet now we are (hopefully) done turning over the roster twice a year.

loved the article as well!

Jared

is actually a very nice weapon off the bench if used correctly. He can guard all 5 positions and gets after it a bit on the offensive glass but anything more than 5 to 6 minute spurts and he really handcuffs your offense. I think most peoples beef with him is the playoff game last year.

by Slappinfaces on Dec 24, 2011 9:56 AM EST reply actions

that's what i think

obviously you don’t keep him out there for long spurts, but if you put him out there for a few minutes at a time he can really stabilize things and throw out a different look for the opposing team on defense

Anxiously awaiting the day my username will be appropriate

by knickswin on Dec 24, 2011 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

for instance, a perfect time to use him in my mind was when Rajon Rondo was going off on DWTDD last year in the playoffs(forget which game it was, maybe it was all of them lol). Just put him on Rondo and give him a different look. I am in no way saying that he could shut down Rondo, just saying that having a6’11 gangly ass weirdo guarding you might throw you off a bit.
