Around SBN: Why We're Skeptical Of LeBron James

Everybody wants to play for the Knicks!

First, on a more serious note, check out Howard Beck's piece on Chauncey Billups, who is understandably bummed that he and his giant suitcase of money are once again lumped into trade rumors centered around a bigger name. Chauncey doesn't want to go anywhere, and he's not the only one who thinks New York is the place to be...

Wilson Chandler and his agent would love to return!

"The first consideration would go to his current team, the Nuggets," Luchey said. "After that, Wilson will field interest from the Knicks. He had a great time in New York, he has a very strong fan base there, he grew there."

J.J. Barea wants in as well!

"I always said the Knicks would be a great second option. I love the city. I love the way they're playing now, their style of play with D'Antoni, the players over there," said Barea, who was in Punta Cana to support slugger David Ortiz’s annual charity golf tournament. "We’ll see. I know Carmelo more than Amar’e. I think after (D’Antoni became coach), I said, ‘That would be a great fit for me.’"

And don't forget Bostjan Nachbar!

Nachbar always has wanted to play in New York.

"I think he’d be a good fit in New York because he knows Mike’s system and he has a good relationship with him,’’ agent Marc Cornstein said.

Guys! This is so great! I'm sure all of these players and their agents respect the Knicks' financial situation and long-term goals and would happily accept small contracts. I'm thinking the full MLE for Boki, then one-year veteran's minimum contracts for Wil and Barea (Jamal Crawford and Grant Hill will take the others). Perhaps even a few "I <3 NY" t-shirts to sweeten the deal. Excellent!

Nah

This happens every year. We’ll see how many of these guys (including Chris Paul) are actually willing to take a hit in the wallet in order to play here. Seriously, can anyone think of a single player who has taken a pay cut or come in under market value in order to play for the Knicks?

Was Larry Johnson the last one?

by superturboultra on Dec 4, 2011 8:32 AM EST up reply actions

Knicks paid LJ almost $70 mil

I wouldn’t say that’s below market value for someone who never regained his Hornets-era form.

Felton maybe last year?

Well his money was pretty good but it was only a 2 year deal which I guess was a sacrifice for him. Especially considering what types of deals other guys got signed to last season

Also

The piece on Billups suggests that it’s not so much getting traded from the Knicks he’d mind as much as getting traded to a rebuilding team. Which I guess is understandable if not as heart warming.

by flossy on Dec 3, 2011 1:13 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Not it really is getting uprooted and sent somewhere else again and again

The going to a rebuilding team is just a foregone conclusion because he’s not going to be traded to a contender to help fill NY’s final pieces.

His hometown team has spit in his face, twice so he has no alligience to them anymore. He probably knew he’d be a short-timer with NY but at the time of the trade I’m sure he also was seeking assurances from NY that they’d take his option and not just use & re-use him.

I’ll be very interested to see how Billups plays this year. He’s been running out of gas come playoff time the last several years because the teams use him up in the regular season. He’s not getting any younger; but I’ve suspected much of Billups health issues was because he spent the 2010 offseason playing in the international tourney rather then rest and healing.

If he doesn’t get brutalized in the back/back/back games the shortened season may keep him fresh in the playoffs

If he's an RFA, if the team that owns your rights matches an offer sheet you're gonna have to stay with them. They get the rights to first refusal as long as they match.

That’s why it’s a risk to go after RFA’s since your offer sheet might have to go over market price just to dissuade the right’s owning team to not match, and while you wait that cap space is held in reserve for the guy til a yes/no happens. In the new CBA that time period went down from a week to like 3 days so it’s much faster and less of a headache to throw an offer sheet at RFA’s nowadays, but it’s still risky.

Fish Fingers give me a break.

by GAx on Dec 5, 2011 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah we should sign him just to stick it to Denver

by 2xtheBully on Dec 3, 2011 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

I've though the same thing, but I think that's what Denver wants

Chandler on a MLE for 4years, that’s a very fair deal. I’m sure Denver would love to secure Chandler to that deal.

Now what I’m wondering is if a RFA signs a 1year contract, does he then become a UFA in the offseason?

Not sure what the CBA fine print is, but I’d sign Chandler to a 1yr offer sheet for the full MLE (if it isnt spent by then).
Denver matches it, but then Chandler becomes a UFA in the offseason
or
Denver doesn’t match and Chandler is a Knick for the season. But then you run the risk of losing Chandler as UFA during the offseason.

Hopefully if Wil takes the one-year deal, he’ll being to love us again as much as we love him.

Not sure how we’d swing signing him as a RFA in March. Doubt we could just keep a seat warm on the bench for him.

by ryinfulleffect on Dec 3, 2011 1:27 PM EST reply actions

Read the Beck piece. ...

The more I think about it. I think we are better off this year getting whoever we can for one year deals and going ahead with the team we have now than trying to make a run at cp3 this year. I think it gives a better chance to go deeper into the playoffs this year rather than a big 3 and a seriously weak supporting cast. Then in the off season let the chips fall where they may. If we get cp3 then fine, if we get Dwight or another superstar fine. If quality players are lining up to play for us now they certainly will be once we have 3 “superstars” which seems like its a given for next season.

Love to have Will back if even just for the end of the season! Going to be fun this year!

Re: "I'm sure all of these players and their agents respect the Knicks' financial situation and long-term goals and would happily accept small contracts

I’m hoping that was more tongue in cheek. I’d love it to be true but I do not believe it is realistic to expect the players to take that position.

Taking a less money for one year isnt the problem; it is the one year contract. Can someone check the fine print of the CBA, but I believe players can’t, and still won’t, receive Bird’s rights from a 1 year contract; especially 1 year minimum.

That protection was put in place to prevent teams from abusing the Cap rules (I have no cap room so I am going to sign LeBron for 1 year for $1million. then next year I’ll sign him to a 20year $900million contract because he now has Bird rights)… that isn’t allowed

The fallout is pretty good players like Matt Barnes go nearly their entire career without ever qualfying for Bird’s rights because will only sign him to 1year deals.

It's not realistic to think Barea will derail his career growth by at least 2years simply for the honor of playing for NY

NY is only wanting to do 1year deals… fair enough good strategy

This is Barea’s moment to cash in. An undersized role player who just help win a NBA title, he’s likely never going to have a deal like this in his career. To secure him may be the MLE, but for the full term, not 1 year

If NY signed him to a 1year, next season he’d likely have to sign another 1year to fit in with all the big shopping. Then in the 3rd season he could maybe take advantage of the MLE of mini-MLE.

That is unless that portion of the CBA has changed and I seriously doubt it did

With Wilson Chandler is still goes back to what are you will to send to Denver in a S&T because he's a RFA

And is a backup to Melo (because can Wilson really be a successful SG) with a full MLE for long term really the priority?

Maybe it is, doesn’t seem like it should

Not a confidence builder, but here's a lil quote pearl of wisdom from NY Post

“The Knicks also are chasing centers Kurt Thomas, Jeff Foster, Tony Battie and Aaron Gray”

True it was from the Post, but sadly the statement is realistic; for single year deals, those may be the usual suspects that you see NY pursuing. And didnt Tony Battie used to back up Nate Thurmond back in 1971?

So the 2011-12 motto may need to be “Be patient and supportive this year and go get em next year”

And, Nochbar is a 31yr old Euro SF who was a 9 & 3 guy in 3 seasons with the Nets (yeah, I had to look him up too!!!)

Although with a shortened camp, who knows what form of ugly might manage to look good for a few games? We’ve got a lot of roster spots to make mistakes on and not a lot of time to evaluate,

we have no good options.

hes a decent league min option

I would love to have Will back

but if we offered him a multi-year MLE deal it would count against the cap, wouldn’t it? So it kinda seems unlikely unless we are giving up on the third superstar thing and really trying to build a team this year which I doubt.

So confused about China contracts

I thought Chandler was stuck in China??

by nbanyk on Dec 3, 2011 5:52 PM EST reply actions

Apparently their season ends around February.

So Chandler and them would be back in time for the 2nd half of the season.

I don't know what any of these fellows can add to this team

Besides for Ill Will who clearly can add a lot….of dollars to our pay roll…which is bad.

CHANDLER WAS THE KNICKS BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER LAST SEASON

NEITHER CARMELO NOR AMARE CARE EVEN A MINUTE ABOUT PLAYING
DEFENSE. ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS GETTING THEIR 20 SHOTS EACH A GAME.

DOUGLAS IS ANOTHER ( and he can’t shoot even a little) CHUCKER.

FIELDS HAS A LOT OF SKILLS BUT CARMELO AND AMARE JUST DON"T PASS THE
BALL.

I was about to say that was an amazingly capital post by frankie, and he didn’t even mention David Lee!

And then I read the next post. Oh frankie.

I feel like I've come in from the wilderness

Things seem kind of familiar, and I think, “frankiec, do I know this dude?…” and then I see a David Lee post and it all comes rushing back.

we're probs not getting any of them

Anxiously awaiting the day my username will be appropriate

by knickswin on Dec 3, 2011 9:27 PM EST reply actions

i could see us getting nachbar

barea will be overpaid though, and chandler’s status as an RFA makes it hard to imagine.

in general, i think we should tone down our expectations for additional players this season. hopefully the front office does that too, since there would be good opportunities to sign players in the offseason if we are conservative on the short term, and we won’t have to lose any of our current cheap / effective players like TD, Landry, and potentially Shumpert.

if burps contract were done now and we had his cap space to play with i think we’d be better served getting tyson chandler and arron afflalo.

our 5 would be

chandler / amare / melo / afflalo / TD

bench

jerome jordan / E / landry / shumpert.

call me crazy but i think that team would do better than a big 3 and old rump roast like the joel anthony’s of the world.

I'd rather have some form of distributing PG somewhere on the roster.

On a team full of stars and scorers, a pass-first orchestrator that can run an offense is huge…

by Zhantee on Dec 4, 2011 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

i am not the biggest burps fan out there

but you are undervaluing him. dude is still a top pg in the nba. its gonna be cool to watch him this year.

I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."

Like the really funny uncle with a healthy bourbon habit who matches every brilliant Thanksgiving story with one or two ill-advised racist jokes or boob grabs, we’re stuck with Melo. So we might as well learn to love him — quirks and all. http://knickerblogger.net/2011-report-card-carmelo-anthony/

or he’s going to be a year older and due to the lack of conditioning during the lockout he will be more prone to injury.

by raj m on Dec 5, 2011 6:14 AM EST up reply actions

The fact that he's taking so long to leave Denver and come back to NY

Is concerning me. But hopefully that’s just something going on with travel plans or saying goodbye to his family. I really do hope he has a great season here, because we looked pretty damn good last year when he was healthy
