Unlikely yet Reasonable non-CP3 Trade Scenario
Precursor: I know this will never happen, but it's far more realistic than all of the CP3 talk that's going on, so I figured it was worth putting out there...at least to divert from those discussions.
There's all this talk about trading half of our team for CP3, but there's another potential deal out there that we should be considering to improve our team on the short term. To accomplish it, we'd only have to trade Chauncey and one other asset.
PHO gets: Chauncey Billups & one low-salary player (Disclaimer: not Fields, TD, or Shumpert)
NYK gets: Steve Nash
Why the hell not? Phoenix absolutely should trade Nash at this point; it's become painful to watch him languish on a borderline playoff team. For the Suns, the time to start rebuilding is now, and Chauncey can be flipped for a number of different possible assets before the trade deadline this season; this trade also allows them to appear gracious to a player that has given them the best part of his career by moving Nash to a city that he loves and a team with a chance to win.
The Knicks, meanwhile, don't have to give up their best young assets to acquire him as opposed to Paul, and (this is where my personal opinion comes in), would be way better off with Nash than with Billups in the shortened season.
Best of all for all you 2012 off-season prospectors, Nash's contract only has this season remaining. We would not be committing to anything beyond this season, so the flexibility would remain, as well as our young talent.
Look, you and I both know it will never happen because Phoenix has the most stubborn front office in the league, but for kicks, I want to ask you guys the following three questions:
Would you rather have Billups or Nash?
Would the potential opportunity to resign Nash at a bargain after this season make this deal even sweeter, or would you discard him?
Who would you rather swap Billups for before the deadline, if anybody?
From Chauncey's perspective, keep in mind that Phoenix is the second closest NBA city to Billups' hometown of Denver (and he already has a ring...), so he would be closer to his family and desired place of retirement.
Now that I'm done outlining my argument, let's hear why I'm wrong.
Looking forward to P&T Game Threads, everybody!

I like that trade and would pull the trigger if it were up to me.
My only concern is that while Billups may have questions about his health, we KNOW Nash will miss some games with that back (always does).

Why would you want Nash he is too old and can't play D
I don't want to hear anymore CP3 to the Knicks trade rumors
I would do this in a heartbeat
Chauncey’s a better defender, but at his age he’s not exactly the Glove. Besides, we have two defensive-minded guards to bring off the bench to help mitigate Nash’s turnstile tendencies.
Meanwhile, Steve Nash could run this offense to perfection from a wheelchair, in his sleep.
But Phoenix won't do this because they are jerks
and don’t want to give D’Antoni the satisfaction.
We'd probably have to give up more to convince them
Like they’d maybe ask for Shump or Landry

I notice you have a wheelchair obsession Flossy
but given that Nash has an AARP I believe he should be allowed to run this offense from a wheelchair. Hell he probably knows it better than D’Antoni at this point.
okay. but at which point do we ship nash, TD, etc to NO for CP3?
i was thinking right after we pull that off.
but i mean we could always wait a few weeks and let nash build up his stock

All for it.
Billups is too much of a shooting pg I than a disher.
Melo and Amar’e need the ball.
Realist.
Phoenix probably feels like it could get more for Nash than Billups
I could only see this happening as a deadline deal if it’s for like Billups and Bully and Phoenix buys out Billups + NY gives them however much money is allowed in the new CBA

Nash is 60 years old please. But really Since Billups cap number is bigger than Nash's Sarver
gets a few more mil not to spend and I think he would like that.
I feel like if we could somehow get Robin Lopez out of this
And maybe give up slightly more, it would be worth it…

count me in on this
nash would make amare and melo work – we’d play the system better. chauncey, while very good, plays at a slower pace. i think melo can work in the d’antoni system fine but amare is so much better with a fast pace, pick and roll, ball movement offence. so too is fields (imho).
lopez played well next to amare and phoenix seems pretty sick of him. getting lopez/ nash means we can run a decent team out this year. what do we give phoenix though? billups obviously, but we may need to give up a young’un. perhaps douglas? certainly don’t want to give up landry if we’re going to play d’antoni ball and i’m excited to see shump.
either way, as others have said, phoenix are a bunch of arseholes so its unlikely to happen. if it did though, i would be delighted.
said this the other day and got negative reviews
BUT IM STILL DOWN FOR THIS!!!!!!
But why would Phoenix do this?
Nash is already an expiring deal. Why trade a very popular franchise player for a guy who’s going to be disgruntled and is also expiring? Unless the Knicks offered them another young cheap player that had promise, I don’t see any motivation for them at all.
Phoenix may be willing to trade Nash, but they’re not going to do it just for the hell of it, to be nice to the Knicks or to Nash himself. It would take including TD to make them bite, and then, as you say, what’s the point for the Knicks?

They might do it to be classy.
Nash has been a great soldier for the Franchise and they are clearly in a rebuild. Why not let him go to a playoff team in his walk year? Of course Robert Sarver and class act have not always gone hand in hand. But it happens. Remember Protland traded Drexler when they were in a similar situation and did not hold the Rockets hostage.
yeah, drexler for otis thorpe straight up if i recall correctly
and that definitely worked out for the glide…

yeah, i agree it's a fine line if you start to add other assets to the trade
and it makes it a hard situation to imagine given nash’s popularity in phoenix. you would essentially have to overpay for an expiring, aging player just to catch the phoenix front office’s attention in the first place.
so yeah, it’s definitely not happening in all likelihood. but it’s a fun situation to imagine.

don't bring that trade and its 10-year fallout up to the phoenix front office
not exactly a selling point. what a turning point for our franchise that turned out to be.

Yeah
Maybe Phoenix could trade Nash for mediocre players on long, lucrative contracts. Oh wait, the Knicks don’t have any of those.
