The Word from Camp Knicks

Training camp doesn't start until Friday, but some of the Knicks are showing up in Greenburgh for zero period. Per Alan Hahn, Carmelo Anthony, Toney Douglas, Iman Shumpert, Josh Harrellson, Andy Rautins, and Landry Fields were all in attendance for a voluntary, closed-to-the-media workout today. Afterward, Fields and Shump spoke to reporters.

Take the jump for a few links and quotatos.

Star-divide

- Landry Fields, to the Daily News on why he "shrunk" at the end of last season:

"I think it was a number of things," Fields said. "Just trying to get used to the way we were playing and also 82 (games)… add on preseason, all the practices. It could have been a rookie wall. I definitely felt some fatigue toward the end. But I'm not here to make excuses I know this year is going to be a lot better."

- Fields again, to ESPN's Jared Zwerling, on how he's looking to overcome last season's struggles:

"A lot of people look at post-trade and all that stuff and the mentality I had," he said. "I really wanted to work on that -- a lot of drives and finishes, and consistency with the shot. With us in our offense, I worked on a lot of corner shots, a lot of wing mostly towards the sidelines. That was kind of the focus. It's also just having a short-term memory. You may miss a shot, but in your mind you think you made it. It's just not getting caught up in the past. It's like a next-play mentality."

(Also from that post, Landry's trainer is Miles Simon, which is awesome. I knew they were acquaintances, but not that they worked together.)

- Iman Shumpert, to Tim Bontemps of the Post:

“I’m just more excited to be here and be at the facility, and be able to put my shoes in a locker and leave them there, instead of carrying a bag of sweaty clothes around,” Shumpert said Monday afternoon after working out at the Knicks’ practice facility.

Read on to see Shump's backhanded compliments for Jarrett Jack. While we're at it, check out the details of Shump's high school jersey retirement the other day.

- More Shump, twat by Hahn:

Shumpert joked about intensity of fans on Twitter. Said he tweeted he's with mom and people said, "Why aren't you in the gym?"

- A housecat:

Meow, meow. Meow.

And there you have it. Amar'e Stoudemire, if you're wondering, is still training in Florida and won't show up until later in the week. The onus is on the rest of the guys to come up with all sorts of inside jokes and cool secret handshakes so Amar'e regrets not showing up earlier.

Completely unrelated to this post...

but the full page ad behind the P&T website is supremely annoying! I keep accidentally clicking on it when switching between windows (the entire background is an active link, all the way down the page), and worst of all, it features Dwyane Wade of all people.

Obviously, this is not Seth’s fault, but you would think SB Nation and Nike would know better than to place this ad as the background on a Knicks blog.

SB Nation, get rid of this ad! In my mind, it’s basically negative advertising for Nike, and I like Nike.

I haven't heard anyone mention this as a possibility but......

what about Raymond Felton resigning with the knicks in 2012 as a fall-back option in the likely event the Knicks won’t be able to acquire CP3? Is Ray Felton pissed off at the trade or has he been understanding about it? Him returning might even be optimal for Knicks, cap considerations and all.

by bababooey2 on Dec 5, 2011 10:35 PM EST reply actions

I’d love to see him come back.

The best part is we would get a solid PG without giving up our assets and all of our cash.

We could sign him, as well as a 5-8 million dollar center. So those two solid guys, Stat n Melo and Fields starting, with TD, Shumpert, Extra E, Turiaf, and Harrelson/James/random big guy getting the rest of the minutes.

I’d be done with that for sure.

Deep team with starts and very good starters.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. Felton will be too fat to come back to the knicks

Sorry to say that I loved Felt, but he looks real mushy in that portland outfit.

Anyways, Chris Paul is coming. Chauncey Billups is staying too. And all you are gonna have to deal with it

Felton tends to get fat in the offseason

That’s what his rep is anyway. But then he gets into season form after training camp and the first few weeks. Even in December, Ray was still kinda chubby. I think it’s just his build, to be honest.

Though he does look extra mushy in that pic

i hear you

but that picture makes him look like he’s been in a fraternity at duke for three years, with his only exercise being making midnight beer runs.

i do miss his sneer though, as well as his solid play in an NY uniform, so it makes me sad to even click on that link again.

well

some things at which jamaal tinsley excels that i haven’t seen iman shumpert do (albeit mostly in highlights):

- patiently running a pick and roll
- finding somebody else in a fast break
- all manner of fancy dribbles
-floaters
- beards

These are all good things

Though I’d say from what I’ve seen, Shump has nice handles.

But Tinsley also has the ability to teach Shump things he shouldn’t be taught. There’s a dangerous side to Tinsley being a tutor

anyone

else not upset, but confused to as why STAT wouldn’t be with the team. I feel with the lockout (obviously) there is less time to prepare for the season and every practice is important. Just my thought.

by Bockas r back on Dec 6, 2011 2:08 AM EST reply actions

i think right now

the guys there are really just getting into shape and working on basic drills. Not really running plays and whatnot yet.

I don’t think coach is there yet either…

I am sure he has a great trainer working with him, and is just doing some stuff where he can be completely focused. STAT being a team player should be the least of our worries.

Burps on the other hand, I wish was there.

Im slightly concerned about Amar'e and his no-show.

He was the guy who wanted the mini-camp before Training camp, and yet him and Billups aren’t with the rest of the guys.

My concern isnt about his commitment, dude carried us on his back until Melo arrived, I just wonder if that esky back injury is still niggling him

by Bertilad on Dec 6, 2011 2:32 AM EST reply actions

Did they ever do that mini-camp Amar'e kept talking about?

also it makes me nervous when there is no mention of Jerome Jordan, hes technically a Knick since we have his rights, shouldn’t he be showing up early to impress people or whatever?

by ubd on Dec 6, 2011 5:17 AM EST reply actions

I don't think we should read too much into who's there right now

Amar’e I think is training in florida, I think the time to worry would be if they’re not there on friday.

by Jackaroe on Dec 6, 2011 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

this is why i dont like berman
You’d think that being able to finally sign his first professional contract would be the biggest reason why Knicks rookie guard Iman Shumpert would be glad the NBA’s lockout has finally ended.

some people value things more then money dude…

The Lakers think they can fleece anyone since the Pau trade with Memphis. This is ridiculous, someones gotta put a stop to this..

Umm baba quit while you are ahead.

If you have been Paying attention to the Last 36 years of NBA history you will find out that What Jerry Buss wants he gets. No Way in hell He gets Kareem from Milwaukee. Got him. No way he gets the Number one pick in the draft to get magic Johnson. Got it. No Way he then gets James worthy in the draft, got him, No way he gets an All-star Center in Thompson to back up Kareem, Got him. Now way he gets Pau Gasol for table scraps. Got him too. Sorry Baba baby but you will just have to root for the Knicks without Paul and Howard on this team.
