sign me up!

I am really excited to see what Chancey can do for us this year.

I would bet, that he has been learning Mike D’s system during the break, as he is the kind of guy that takes his job seriously.

The only thing I disagree with is the idea that the lockout is good for his knees… because even though the season is shorter, there are less off days… rest is the key and he isnt gonna be getting it.

Hopefully Mike D trusts Iman and DWTDD enough to let Burps rest properly and doesnt run him into the ground (my biggest Mike D gripe).

I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."

yes, rest.

but still. an extra two months off has got to help. and the simple nature of the way the season is going to be laid out will require all coaches to make pre-emptive subs, if you catch my drift.

i forgot to mention in the post, but will say it here for no particular reason: jason kidd just won his very first championship, at the ripe old age of 38. chauncey is younger, and more battler testeder.

I’m excited to see what he can do this season, but next season I’d be very excited to see the Knicks sign two guys of the caliber of Felton and Nene, a PG and a C, instead of bringing in a third star.

It will allow us to have a very good starting lineup, as well as some depth on the bench. The question becomes, It CP3 worth lets say Felton, Nene, Fields, Shumpert, Douglas, and our next two first round picks?

I don’t think so. Go with the deep team, not the big name.

Go for a second tier guy

but enough with CP3 and Howard. We gave up way too much to get Carmelo so we need to be smart and play with who we have.

I’d love Wilson Chandler back after he gets out of China and a center would be nice but the Knicks need to take a year off from the blockbuster trades.

by Billito on Dec 6, 2011 12:27 PM EST reply actions

I don't get the hysteria of signing CP3

Is he a nice player? Sure. Understatement of the year, but there are much much better ways to spend money. We have Chauncey for this season, and with all the work iMan has put in this summer, I seriously think he’ll be our starting PG next season. Excellent defensively, he’s working on his shot selection and he can create a ton of mismatches. So why spend our remaining cap space on CP3 when we have a very good PG for this season, and a player with extremely high potential for next season. It’s quite redundant.

I still don’t think that chemistry is as important as some of you are saying. Sure, it’s good to have a stable roster and know your teammates, but with the level of coaching in the NBA, talent is pretty much what will eventually win. Don’t get me wrong, having chemistry is a great thing to have but it’s not the be all end all of an NBA-championship team. Look at the Celtics and the Heat. They assemble a great level of talent of their roster and boom – one wins the title in it’s 1st year together, the other makes the Finals and loses because their star player disappears and Dirk plays out of his mind. Talent is what wins in the NBA. So while having a solid deep team with a good bench is nice, if bringing let’s say Dwight Howard makes our overall talent level higher, I’m for it.

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

Why on earth would you think that? He hasn’t played so much as a single preseason game!

We need a top-flight PG for this team considering the scoring weapons we have on the roster already who need to be well-managed.

Saying “I think Iman Shumpert will be ready to take the reigns next year ‘cause he’s been working really hard” is basically like saying “My 15 year old cousin has been studying really hard for his driver’s test, so I’m sure next summer he’ll be ready to drive this Maserati in the F1 races.” I mean, it’s not literally impossible but it’s pretty damned far-fetched.

long. I put zero confidence in a guy who spends as much of his free time as he can following those two around like lap dogs. Especially since he is friends with those two. Really Chris Paul is gonna stand up to Carmelo and say hell no boy I am not passing you the ball, you have shot 1 for your last 10 and Amare is over here beasting. Billups can do that, Chris Paul not so much.

Or did you notice that in game one of the Boston Series, that Amare was destroying the Celtics in the second half, and Billups kept feeding him, but the minute Billups got hurt the ball stopped going to Amare and went to Carmelo damn near every trip down the floor.

What on earth makes you think that? We’re talking about the best PG in the league, he can throw passes that Chauncey Billups can’t even pull off in video games and he orchestrates an offense better than anyone outside of Nash. He is the best passer the Knicks have had at point guard since Stephon Marbury

Disagree, Felton was a better passer than Billups (especially Billups with the Knicks, but also in general). Chauncey has never been more than an average playmaker. He mostly just looks to avoid coughing up the rock.

He is a muuuuuch better shooter and more efficient scorer than Felton ever was, but we have a guy on our team (Amar’e) who is basically a massive waste of $20 million unless he is playing with a PG who is making it a priority to get him the ball, in motion, rolling toward the basket, as often as possible.

If we get a repeat of last season where the average possession goes something like Billups walks it up, spends about a nanosecond contemplating a PnR, decides against it, and either chucks up a prayer or give it to Melo to iso on the wing… I am going to pull my hair out.

For all of his intangibles and being basketball Yoda and whatever, he has never been a great playmaking guard which is what this offense really needs. Unless he fully buys into the D’Antoni offense he’ll be holding the team back, honestly.

by flossy on Dec 6, 2011 1:45 PM EST reply actions

Flossy, back off you are over playing it. I know what your deal is

But acting like Billups does not know how to run the pick and roll is intellectually disingenuous. Billups has run pick and rolls with KG, Rasheed and Ben Wallace, Chris Webber, McDyess, Nene and virtually every damn big man he has ever played with. he obiously did not have time to work on the PNR with Amare, but given that he has run 1000s of pick and rolls in his career, I am confident that he will be able to figure out how to run the pick and roll with Amare.

by Robert Curre on Dec 6, 2011 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't say he doesn't know how

Based on how he played last season he just didn’t even try. It amounts to the same thing.

Maybe he’ll come to camp newly inspired and full of confidence in a coach and system he spent the summer bad-mouthing, ready to pick and roll till the cows come home. Who know?!

by flossy on Dec 6, 2011 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

You should lighten up your grip because with you hugging so tight

you will slow Paul down ya know what I mean. As for Bilups since he wants to make more than eddie House money next season and is in a walk year, you bet your ass he will.

by Robert Curre on Dec 7, 2011 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you in some senses

I think Felton was a better passer and more of a threat to score in the paint. Chauncey’s a better shooter though.

Anyway, I got off-topic, but I think that Chauncey’s playmaking is better than what his assists reflect. He’s a very crafty PG, and while he’s not an amazing passer, he does have good court vision and has the ability to get an offense into its sets. He just needs time to adapt to the PnR with Amar’e, just like Felton did.

I agree with stingy d, I’m excited to see what Burps can do this season

Chauncey wants to make his defender give him room

by altering pace and picking up fouls. It gets him to the line and gets him some extra strokes and time to rest. d’A is not found of slowing the pace.

He is not really suited to SSOL for long periods if at all. Doesn’t really play to his strengths.

i hear you. but i made mention, and hoped it would be taken very seriously, that chauncey shot about 8% below his career average from 3 while he was here. if the focus is there (and it certainly is for most contract year guys) i imagine we’ll see his % go back up. and the d’antoni system that this guy supposedly can’t play in tends to increase %’s for players because its predicated on ball movement and player movement. which creates open shots.

so, if knowing his role will make a difference, and i believe it will, we will be peasantly surprised by chauncey. but i guess i couold just be a hopeless optimist.

in order to be a good PnR guy...

don’t you need to be a threat shooting, passing and driving?

i like chauncey’s chops and leadership (from what i know), but his days of penetrating deep into the lane and finishing seem to have passed us by. if we can use his contract this year to bring in a solid, youngISH PG or a young big with upside (see deandre jordan or even… yes, i’m going to say it… javale mcgee), than i say we do it.

Chauncey is not a good fit with Mike D'Antoni

assuming Mike is only good at coaching ssol. However, Chauncey is more or less a good fit with Amar’e and Carmelo. Therefore, if we don’t get CP3, I would be down with getting a new coach who could do a better job of meshing our three best talents. Jerry Sloan and Phil Jackson would be the ideal choices.

Iman Shumpert gets me excited. Chauncey Billups makes me daydream

In all stingyness Billups is the reason I really am deeply excited about this season. He can bring us to the Finals if we stay healthy. He is a stone cold killer, and toanyone who says he isold, just know that JASON KIDDs bitch ass is 4 years OLDER than Billups. And Kidd just won the title.

We need Billups for the same reason we need CP, because they both can control this star battle we got. Honestly I want Billups and CP3 both. I want a backcourtofBillups, CP. Shump, and Fields/Douglas.

But Billups is a competitive guy who waits for people to fall asleep, so dont fall asleep on him

by teksurgical on Dec 7, 2011 1:50 AM EST reply actions

One more thing about CP3...

Melo had to force his trade in order to get his extension before the lockout. Chris Paul can easily just not sign his name on an extension with any team, even if he gets traded, and maybe we can just sign and trade once free agency opens.

It would be nice not to have to dismantle our team again, but CP3 at all costs for me…

Does he have the legs and will he hold up to the schedule, or is age going ot be more of a factor given the current state of the season. The other is, what sorts of adjustments will have to be made to accomodate any short comings in Coach D’s system. Will the coach be able to adjust to CB?

I would actually be willing to keep Chauncey past this year

provided we can’t get Chris Paul and Chauncey’s age doesn’t catch up to him too much. He is a great PG for when you already have other big time players. His shooting is what is really great about him because he spaces the floor excellently. Plus he is smart and can direct the offense well and play pretty decent defense.

my guess is billups knows

that he is not going to get a bigger contract than his current one. and he also doesn’t seem to be the kind of guy that is going to grub for money. he just wants the best scenario for his family, cus he is definitely a family man. so he might just want to go back to denver.

however, he might be of the opinion that its his last hurrah, and roll with the winners for a discount. maybe, maybe not. but having a tried and true guy on your team is always always always good.

we’ll need to find a good PnR back-up PG. like duhon or arroyo. we have to find our barea if we are going to keep our kidd (burps). I think we can go deep in the playoffs with the current core, we just need to make savvy moves from now on because we gutted the team for melo.
Will is another good option if he gets out of china.

but if the team is pinning it’s hopes on TD or iMan as the back-up PG, then i say just trade burps for cp3 if we can get him.
